Bozell Column: Obama Unloved, Here and Abroad

In the Bush years, poll results that showed the American people losing confidence in their president were featured routinely on the front page of major newspapers like The Washington Post. But when the Post discovers Obama’s ratings collapsing, you need a search party to find where inside the paper they’re buried.

On April 26, the Post offered three stories on polls, each with bad news for Obama. The only one mentioned on the front page (in the very bottom right-hand corner) was a Post/ABC poll showing “rising gas prices are leading Americans to drive less, and hurting the president’s popularity.” Then the reader would have to travel to page A-12.

“Hurting” is an understatement. Only 39 percent of those who called gas prices a “serious financial hardship” approve of Obama’s performance as president. Among independents who found hardship, 67 percent disapprove of Obama. Ouch.

The Post said this hardship could “slow Obama’s reelection campaign.” Again, that’s putting it mildly. Sixty percent of independents feeling the pain of gas prices said they would definitely not vote for Obama. In a matchup with Mitt Romney in that bracket, Romney wins by 24 points.

Turn the page backward, and on page A-10, there’s another story. More Americans disapprove of President Obama’s management of the war in Afghanistan than support it: 44 percent approved, 49 percent disapproved. Once again, just focus on the independents: 53 percent disapproved of Obama’s handling of Afghanistan.

Remember the daily barrage of Bush (lack of) approval stories during the Iraq War? Where are those same “reporters” now? Turn the page backward one more time, and on page A-8, there’s perhaps the most shocking poll story: Egyptians still disapprove of America. This poll came from the Pew Global Attitudes Project, created in 2002 by liberals at Pew to underline global dissatisfaction with President Bush. Last spring, they announced with great fanfare – this is their own press release headline – that “Obama More Popular Abroad Than At Home, Global Image of U.S. Continues to Benefit.”

Whoops. What they’re finding now is that when Pew sampled Egyptians to see if they had a favorable or unfavorable view of the United States, just 20 percent of Egyptians have a favorable view of the United States, compared to 79 percent unfavorable.

How could this be, after our media hailed Barack Obama’s “historic” speech in Cairo in 2009, bowing deeply to what “the Holy Koran tells us,” telling how he loved as a child to hear “the call of the Azaan at the break of dawn,” and playing up “civilization’s debt to Islam”?

Pew asked specifically if Egyptians had confidence in President Obama. Perhaps they loathed America, but liked Obama? Nope. The breakdown was still slanted to the negative: 35 percent had confidence, while almost double that number, 64 percent, disagreed. By contrast, fully 75 percent of those surveyed had a favorable view of the radical Muslim Brotherhood.

Remember MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and other Obama fans trying to credit Obama’s Cairo speech for the Egyptian revolution? The Pew pollsters also asked if Egyptians thought the U.S. response to the Tahrir Square protests had a positive or negative impact on the current situation in Egypt. Almost twice as many picked “negative” impact (39 percent) as “positive” (22 percent).

This is certainly not the reception that media liberals and Pew pundits expected. They couldn’t imagine that perhaps people in other countries just have an anti-American animus regardless of the president. We elected a pandering leftist who apologizes for America and insists in Cairo that “this cycle of suspicion and discord must end,” and disapproval of America in Muslim countries barely budged.

So where is the rest of the Pew poll? Inside this report, they reported polling in 23 countries around the world in their Spring 2011 survey, but there are no results yet as to how popular President Obama is among our allies now. Days before the 2008 election, NBC touted a Pew poll, and from Istanbul, correspondent Dawna Friesen concluded “If the world had a vote, Barack Obama would win in a landslide. Regardless of who wins, the world is clamoring for a new America in 2009.”

All that media hyperbole about the historically charismatic Obama healing those global wounds inflicted by the Bush-Cheney neoconservatives has crashed and burned. But the media pushing that discredited narrative now need to acknowledge that Obama can’t work miracles, especially when half the time, he waits around for someone else to make the miracle. He cannot be honestly portrayed any longer as an inspirational leader – not here, not anywhere.

like having termites, much of the damage is not visible

obama is in more serious trouble than the polls show because there are always those who will not admit, even to strangers, that they no longer support a certain person or issue. Then there is the matter of those who will not vote against obama but will not show up to vote for him.

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Tue, 04/26/2011 - 10:01pm.

The left-wing media has a vested interest in making Obama look good. After all, Obama is their "baby". By baby, I am referring to the careful and calculated harvesting of "President Barack Obama" from a no-show senator to the most powerful leader of the free world. I still can't believe they pulled it off. I pray for the day we find out just who Barack Obama really is, where he was born, how he obtained admission to Harvard and what he really wants for America.

While trying to fool us, they're also fooling themselves. They're con men who have bought their own con. I only hope there are enough Americans who won't be conned a second time - but that's a big hope....

It is most improper to reveal a visceral dislike---

Submitted by matthewdean on Tue, 04/26/2011 - 10:15pm.

of anyone these days; it is just so "un" PC.

It leaves an even more poisonous impression if the dislike is aimed at a minority, no matter how justified that dislike might be.

Charges of stupidity and/or incompetence, when leveled at an individual who is a minority, absolutely reek of racism on the part of the less than happy finger pointer.

Rest assured that is how it will be played, regardless of the truth of the charges and the justification of the comment(s) made.

Maybe it is just as well that PC has damped down responses from Obama haters so that they are portrayed more as coming from an Obama 'disliker".

If the bone-deep and gut level distrust, dislike, disgust, and disdain for Obama, his administration, his lackeys, toadies, and minions, were unleashed free of censorship, all electronic communications systems would likely suffer complete and total meltdown as a result of the scathing language that would be turned loose.

In today's PC world, and with the liberal media's tilt, it appears to me that any expressed bad feelings, thoughts, or statements, exist much like an iceberg; seven-eighths submerged.

Probably just as well.

After talking to liberals

Submitted by Thoreau on Tue, 04/26/2011 - 10:23pm.

After talking to liberals more than I'd like, I know Obama will always have supporters. Some people are so myopic and historically ignorant that they can't put 1 and 1 together. They are the admirer's of Mussolini, Stalin, Napoleon, Mao Zedong, Hitler, and Mohammed.

Reality doesn't exist to them. Cause and effect has no bearing on their thought processes beyond animalistic feelings. These people will always support dictators, despots, and kings. That is their God.

Obama's poll number's will drop to a point, but due to the communists teaching a generation of degenerates- it won't go lower than that.

He's one of the sociopath's. Thievery is Justice. Justice is Society. Society is God. It's who they are, and it's what he is. Misery loves company.

Don't worry about the poll numbers. Worry about making the right choice and humiliating liberals/communists with reality wherever you find them.

I've heard liberals around me

I've heard liberals around me talking less and less about actually liking Obama and his policies and more and more about hating Republicans.

cognitive disonance

Submitted by wizardjr on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 9:49am.

Like ghetto roaches, these libtards cannot make themselves admit their troubles are in themselves and their stupid choices. So, they pick an external target. Hitler had the Jews. Ghetto losers have "the man". Libtards have conservatives, the religious right, etc.

It's the same internal fault mechanism of an addict.

Dear Mr. Bozell,

Submitted by gwalt on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 8:16am.

Please do another campaign against the "media"----except this time, don't use ABC, CBS, and NBC as your target.
Use Diane Sawyer, Matt Lauer, Katie Couric, Brian Williams, George Stephanopoulos, Chris Wragge etc., etc.

Shame them, name them on billboards and newspaper ads as well as bumper stickers. They will target ANY Republican by name, freeze it, polarize it.

Please, let's do the same to them. Imagine someone driving thru the MickeyD's (that pays no attention to politics like millions and millions don't but watch network news and believe what they "hear") and seeing a billboard in front of them calling these anchors LIARS---or something milder if you will.

They wouldn't be able to handle the criticism. They would freak out and perhaps these millions would start questioning what they are being fed. We'll donate.

What else did you expect

Submitted by John21 on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 9:56am.

What else could the propaganda media do?
You can't believe they will admit that their (created) hero is not the shining light that they proclaim him to be in every report.
This administration has been a absolute failure in just about every catagory since assuming power but, you will not hear that from the left wing media.
We have no Economic Policy, sorry Mr. Krudman but your BS doesn't fly.
We have no coherent Foreign Policy, I am unsure that Mr Obama can spell it.
We have no coherent Domestic Policy, no I do not mean just throwing money in the tiolet.
We have no coherent Energy Policy, except to increase the cost to make the Enviro crowd happy.

It would also interfer with the increase in public relations efforts to get the lieing corrupt Mr. Obama reelected. The media will never admit that because it would harm there overblown ego's and would effect their perception of there elitist status.
