Bozell Column: Galluping Past Bad Polls?

Some of President Obama’s policies are not faring well in public opinion, but will anyone be told? On February 2, a Gallup poll found that Obama’s executive order "allowing U.S. funding for overseas family planning organizations that provide abortion" was decidedly unpopular: only 35 percent approved, while 58 percent disapproved.

You didn’t know this? You’re not alone: A Nexis survey finds none of the television networks, cable or broadcast, noticed these results, either.

The Gallup survey found overwhelming approval for other Obama policies – on higher fuel efficiency standards, on restricting lobbyists from joining his administration, on interrogating suspects according to the Army Field Manual, and on naming special envoys for Afghanistan and Pakistan – so there is plenty of good news for the administration.

But why not report the negative news as well?

Barack Obama is the most extreme pro-abortion president in history. He supports the Freedom Of Choice Act (FOCA), which would provide unlimited, unrestricted taxpayer funding of abortion. Only 9 percent of the public agrees with him. It is so surprise, then, that Obama would not want the media talking about his executive order supporting subsidies for international abortionists.

And they didn’t. CBS and NBC noted it in a single sentence. ABC later offered a story, but incredibly chose to focus on the theme that religious-right forces were "brutal" in their opposition

Then there is the public concern over the potential dangers of Guantanamo terror suspects being released or moved into American prisons. The media ought to acknowledge that despite their tub-thumping on Bush’s allegedly horrendous record on detainees and how it was hurting our reputation with the Europeans, Bush was not as unpopular on this policy at home as they wanted him to be. According to that same Gallup survey, ordering the Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorist suspects closed within a year wasn’t popular, either: 44 percent approved, 50 percent disapproved.

The media are not ignoring all the troubling Gallup poll results for Obama. The number that most of the networks noticed was on the biggest story, the so-called "stimulus" plan. When Gallup asked if Congress should pass Obama’s plan as proposed, make major changes to it, or reject it, only 38 percent said it should pass as proposed, while 37 percent said major changes should be made first, and 17 percent said it should be rejected.

On February 3, CBS, CNN, and Fox News all passed along those numbers. CBS reporter Sharyl Attkisson announced: "More than half of Americans say Congress should make big changes to the president's stimulus package or reject it all together. And Republicans detect a chink in the armor." CNN analyst David Gergen lamented: "I don't think they anticipated was how effective the Republicans and the critics would be in picking it apart." Appearing as a guest on the "NewsHour" on PBS, Senator John Thune also spread the number, even if the anchors and reporters there hadn’t announced it.

ABC ignored the survey that night as if it wasn’t important. Worse yet, NBC went into damage control mode for the administration.

Over on MSNBC that night, poll results that discouraged Obama were not very welcome. On Keith Olbermann’s "Countdown," liberal analyst Craig Crawford mentioned this poll result very vaguely, like it was a spreading venereal disease.

But on "Hardball," Chris Matthews strangely suggested new Gallup polls showed Obama should move faster on his plans: "Just three weeks ago, 83 percent of Americans approved of the way Barack Obama was handling his job as president-elect. Now, amid some tough decisions President Obama, in the new USA Today/Gallup poll, [is] down to a still groovy, but not still heavenly, 63 percent job approval, which translates to a 19-point drop in three weeks. Message from Ben Franklin: In order to get some things done, Mr. President, a stitch in time saves nine."

On her show that evening, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow used Gallup Poll results just like all her MoveOn.org and Daily Kos fans would demand. Armed with a new survey of 2008 voters showing Democrats with an eight-point advantage in party identification, Maddow insisted the Republicans in Washington should not be humored. They should be crushed: "We’ve got a really big crisis in our hands as a country. Is it really that important to bend over backwards to try to make the Republicans in Congress happy right now?"

Don’t count on this new Gallup poll getting much play: while 48 percent say the media coverage of Obama is about right in tone, only 11 percent say it’s too tough, while 38 percent said it’s not tough enough. Expect that 38 percent number to grow if the media keeps hiding the poll results they don’t like.

The Old Media will cover for Obama as long as they can

After all, Obama is their man..for the moment.  They once covered for Bubba too. The MSM is not interested in news.  They are interested in liberal agenda.  Many don't even hint at partisan reporting anymore.

That's their playbook.

That's their playbook. Censorship when it's politically expedient.

Formula #1. Fault Bush and/or Republicans for everything no matter how trivial or outrageous especially if a Democrat is responsible.

Formula #2. Obama is God and he makes no mistakes.

Formula #3. If Obama did do something wrong, read Formula #2 again.

Its in the JOB DESCRIPTION... they must make Comrade Glorious Supreme Leader Obama suceed at any cost. Now there, you have it. No bad news. You will be cut off if you do.

Brent...

You are way too smart for this one. Everyone knows that in order for Comrade Obama to be successful he will need the almost complete co-operation from all media outlets.

Russian judges

There are some sports where the players play, and the analysts talk about it, like football or baseball. But there are other sports where they have judges, and the judges play as much a part of the game as the players. In ice skating, the judges are often more important than the players. You get one Russian judge, and you can count on the American getting the lowest possible score, while the Russian gets the highest score, no matter how poorly performed.

The media presents politics as ice skating. It isn't what the skaters do. What matters is how the judges score it. And right now, we have Russian judges all over the place.

The scores they report are only the scores that help their team.

It helps if you put a face on them.......

When thinking of Russian judges, I think of Boris and Natasha :) It is true that the deck we are playing with is soooooooo stacked that common sense is trumped for feel good politics and adoration of Duh1. (see julio below)

Boris and Natasha!  Yup,

Boris and Natasha!  Yup, sort of sums up the first couple, too. (LOVED the old R&B show with its plethora of puns...)

"But why not report the negative news as well?"

Simple answer, there IS no bad news, except concerning those infidels who refuse to drink the Commandant's (praises be upon him!) Kool-Aid.

Welcome to the socialist workers' paradise --- or, at least the paradise of the cultural effete, um, elite leaders of said workers.

It's gonna be a loooong four years in the conservative underground wilderness until the babarians that have at last breeched the city gates can once again be expelled.

Hmmm....

I feel like Chris Matthews is reading my posts!  This afternoon (way before Hardball) I posted those same numbers.  Although I must admit that my sentiments were a bit different as I stated that libs seem to think that a 20 point drop in 3 weeks isn't a bad thing.

Which brings me to one further point...can Chris Matthews not subtract?  Approval rating was 83%...is now 63%....that equals 20 points by my last count, not 19.

And the media will continue..

to lie or fudge the numbers until the "I'm to busy to think on my own" public stop trusting in whatever the media tells them to be the truth. If more of the general public would educate themselves just a little on history and basic politics the media wouldn't have a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it out of.

HeavyChevy, what can we do?

You hit the nail on the head, here, HC, to be sure.  So what can we do?  I post articles from NewsBusters on my facebook and I tell my friends to research this stuff on their own, and they do.  But I'm only one voice amongst millions.  How can we, "we" being those who see through the smoke and mirrors of the MSM, bring the truth to the general populace?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sound like a whiner.  I know our message matters and can change the minds and hearts of those who embrace it.  But sometimes even I feel overwhelmed and insignificant.  Sometimes I feel like I'd have better success pissing up a rope during a hurricane.

Any suggestions?

"Liberate tutume ex inferis, liberal puppets."  Me.

You are on the right path

it always takes one voice to get things done (both good and evil) you may think your alone dborschjr68 but you are not, we are out there in great numbers but the MSM wants the world to think we are nothing more then a small nuisance in their grand scheme of things. except its the other way around.

And no you are not a whiner you're just voicing a real concern but take heart in most of the NB stories regearding polls show that a huge chunk of America still think the way we do here on this site but the MSM just has to money and the face time to convince you otherwise.

If your wondering where are the conservatives and how come you don't see us on the internet as much as liberals there are a multiple of simple reasons...we work, we go to school, we have chores, we have families, in other words we have a life outside of hovering over a keyboard 24/7 posting propaganda living off the system or mommy and daddy's money.

Fox news kills those leftist programs, liberal papers are borderline junk or going out of business and at least 80% percent still believes in God.

What your doing is more then fine just remember you are not alone.

some lefty here please explain

How come we can't "waste" our tax dollars paying CEOs a competitive wage, but it's okay to buy abortions for women in other countries?

But acts of kindness and generosity must be free and voluntary; no man has a right to compel another to follow his conscience. This is a concern which lies between a man and his God.

-Richard Fuhrman, pro slave advocate, 1823

Because Abortion is a Sacrament -- why not spread the love?

Bartender!  A round of abortions for everyone!  Compliments of the American taxpayer!

Ann Coulter was quite astute when she compared abortion to a sacrament in the Democratic party.  The only reason it continues to pass is because of the "other issues," as in the past election.  The public didn't elect Obama because of his extremist FOCA support, but in spite of it (a sad fact).

BTW, nice quote.

And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall.   -- Edgar Allan Poe

Biased Polls

Even the polls that I have seen that are against this stinker of a bill are biased in favor of it. I can't quote exactly the polls I have seen in the last couple of days because I didn't save the links, but they are something like this:

"President Obama's stimulus bill is opposed by most Republicans because they say it will not stimulate the economy, do you.....".

That question is biased in several ways. I would have written it democratics/Republicans, because that's what it honestly is, not President Obama/Republicans. Democratics wrote the bill. In a popularity poll, Presidents often do better than Congress because everyone hates Congress, so the question is pre-loaded with that fact.

Second, many economists and others not-Republican are saying that the bill will not stimulate, including the non-partisan CBO; the question hides that fact.

Third, the question really gives far more information that is not required for an honest answer. By tagging who is already for and who is against the bill, the answer will be dirtied by existing political leanings.

Had the question been -'Do you think the democratics' stimulus bill will truly stimulate the economy?', you would get more dropouts or non-responses, but also more meaningful data.

I saw an article a year or two ago on all of the polling organizations and their roots. To varying extents, they are all run by liberals, and based on the questions they ask that bias is obvious.
