Bozell Column: Harvard vs. The Hood

Barack Obama’s inauguration was an enormous magnet for the stars of stage, screen, TV, and the radio, the celebrity-stuffed culmination of the goals of the Sixties civil rights movement. Some of the most prominent stars were black musicians. This is an opportunity to raise the question: Whither goest black popular culture, especially hip-hop music, under the new president?

1. Will the Obama presidency drain the swamp of hip-hop hate? Can he remake the dividers into uniters? On Tuesday night, the rapper Jay-Z performed on the ABC Inaugural ball special in a tux and nerdy glasses, toning down the thug-rap with a song called "History." ABC didn’t have to bleep a single word, even if the older demographics in the audience were still wondering why this is called music. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the pendulum of rap music swung away from glorifying the "thug life" of drug dealers, pimps, and gangsters? With a black man in the White House, could rappers be less pessimistic about authority? When talking about The Man, there is no more powerful man in Washington than the black man just sworn in as our 44th president.

The early signs aren’t promising. On YouTube, Jay-Z and another rapper, Young Jeezy, appeared at a Sunday night inaugural party in Washington. They certainly weren’t in the spirit of optimism and nonpartisanship. Jeezy proclaimed: "I wanna thank two people. I wanna thank the mother [profanity] overseas that threw two shoes at George Bush. Listen, listen! I wanna thank the mother [profanity] who helped them move their [profanity] up out of the White House...My president is mother [profanity] black!"

Jay-Z rapped: "You can keep ya puss, I don’t want no more Bush / no more war, no more Iraq, no more white lies, my president is black!"

Looking at rappers like this, you really have to wonder if they really believe their own wealth-building bluster about how terrible America’s been to them. What kind of dystopian country have these young black millionaires been living in? Jay-Z was born a few weeks before 1970, Young Jeezy was born in 1977. When they were growing up in the Carter and Reagan years, was America a land of apartheid and oppression? Sadly, some of the most successful hip-hop music thrives on an extreme of pessimism and despair, and spreads it, like poisoned peanut butter. But they never lived it.

2. Will Obama’s rise shift black youth away from thug-rapper role models like 50 Cent and toward black high achievers? NBC’s "Today" explored the "Harvard vs. Hood" debate over black role models. It was outrageous to find correspondent Jamie Gangel sympathetically painting the gangsta-rapper 50 Cent thusly: "Behind the trademark scowl and explicit lyrics is a smart, soft-spoken businessman who can be very different in private." He doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink, she underlined. "Do you think you’re misunderstood?" she asked hopefully.

After getting a nod, she changed the subject to commerce: "But he knows what sells. You scare people." 50 Cent agreed: "I know I scare people. That's actually my job. That's why they buy my music. I scare them for $16.99, and they--and they buy the records and they're entertained by it." Gangel suggested it was all unreal, and therefore innocent. Does this woman fail to understand this guy was a crack cocaine and heroin dealer before being "discovered" by Eminem?

Sadly, when Gangel proceeded to ask young blacks whether President Obama or 50 Cent would be a stronger role model, most picked the rapper, as one said, "because he's cool. I mean, he's what's in. Yes, the highest leadership position in American has changed, but society has still not changed yet." Another added: "I do think that the life experiences of 50 Cent cannot be dismissed, and I think a lot of African-Americans can relate to 50 Cent’s experience."

This is where some fatherly fuddy-duddies are desperately needed. Would a "businessman" like 50 Cent have met the favor of Michelle Robinson’s father before she brought home Barack? It’s nice to visualize a tough old-school dad that would dare to look down his nose at a wildly successful gangsta rapper as more of a menace than a man.

These kids still tried to pay tribute to Obama -- by calling him "gangster." It’s partially President Obama’s fault. He’s been very tight-lipped and cautious about disparaging rappers. He’s done it only when pressed, and always with great caution and tributes to rap artistry. He’s tried to display how he’s down with hip hop. He has copied Jay-Z’s moves and invited him to perform at a concert after the Inauguration for his staff party in Washington. What wonders he might work if President Obama would sound much more like Bill Cosby now that he’s standing in a powerful bully pulpit. But who will press him to try it?

Nothing will change.

Sorry to say it, hate to say it, don't want to say it, but things will not change until our attitude change and as my brother so eloquently put it. "There's power in oppression."

→ Got that right

But it seems to me President Obama is lifting Hip-Hop up with him.

If anything, Hip-Hop will police itself as a result of the legitimacy Obama gives it.

I was actually surprised President-elect Obama didn't choose a Hip-Hop artist to introduce a poem rather than Mrs Puff (from Spongebob)

Ask not what your country can do for you.  Ask what you can do for your country - Khalil Gibran

I think elevating hip-hop

I think elevating hip-hop is too much to ask, but maybe he will at least snuff out some of  the "studying and doing well in school is acting white" attitude in high schools.  Seeing that a black man can indeed rise to the top may make some of those kids not be ashamed of studying and working hard.

→ MB

You remind me of a thought I had during the campaign.

Could someone five years down the road catch up with the youths who made that now famous "Because of Obama" video, and see if they actually became what they claimed they'd been inspired to become.

I'm hoping they all meet their goals.  It's an ill wind that blows no good at all.

Ask not what your country can do for you.  Ask what you can do for your country - Khalil Gibran

Also...

an honest, intelligent, hard working black person is the enemy in the eyes of MSM, race baiters and hip hop artist (and I use the term "artist" as loosely as possible). Even with a half black being President there will ALWAYS be something to b***h about. If all the victimization goes away all three of the above I just mentiong will be out of a job.

The sufferage will never end, there is just too much at stake.

Calling it as I see it that's all.

→ Can't ignore talent

Will Smith doesn't fit.  Started with a few rhymes and kept moving onward and upward.

Ask not what your country can do for you.  Ask what you can do for your country - Khalil Gibran

Correct CA

Will Smith is the exception to the rule he turned out very well.

   The worst of Rap has

The worst of Rap has been the exploitation of black youth.  It's kind of a one way door for young blacks.  Once they buy into the Rap culture there is no where they can intergrate it into regular society so they are left with only 'anti-social' avenues of expression.  It's sad but for so many of the minority youth their quality of life has deteriorated since the advancement of civil rights.  It's hard to know, but perhaps had not MLK been assasinated he would have led the black community into full emancipation and away from government dependency.  The 'leaders' who took over leadership after him were not about to give up their positions of power by leading their followers to true independence and individuality.  And the democrats?  Well after controlling these people for over 200 years weren't about to let one of their biggest voting blocks get away.

Rap Culture

Rap music and hip-hop could not be successful if blacks were the only fans. Take a look sometime at what the average white high school student listens to. For that matter, take a look at the fan base of the outrageous black comedians like Katt Williams (on Comedy Channel tonight) where every second word is the n-word that the rest of us can't use.

Those 'artists' defend their language and disgusting rap culture with the claim that they themselves are black so it's okay, but they are very happy to sell their garbage to whites. Otherwise they couldn't make it.

Bum Rap!

Too many of our youth are into this garbage.  A lot of these kids are easily influenced by this junk.  I would never listen to the "horrible" rap tunes of Jay-J, J-Pee, Jay-Z or whatever his name is.

It's Fiddy Cent , man!

And don't forget how Obama joked about his daughter listening to a very vulgar "Snoop Dogg" song when she was very young. The song was titled "Drop it like it's hot", which Obama's daughter thought was "Drop it like a sock" and refers to a woman "dropping" down low and rocking her pelvis, simulating sex acts.

btw

...here's the video of Obama recalling the tender tale of his innocent 3 year old, along with the silky smooth rap moves the Dalai Obama is known for:

SRY FOR THE LOOOONG POST

I largely agree with almost everything that you wrote. But you don't go deep enough. Perhaps it's because it's not really your field but there's more to it than that. First, Rap is an industry run by satan just like heavy metal is. See the documentary, "They Sold Their Souls For Rock and Roll", by Pastor Joe Schimmel at Good-fight.org to understand better. The rappers that you rightly castigate are the lowest of the low, no bigger piece of crap than the one they have a movie out about right now, "Biggie Smalls".  The record that made him infamous chronicled his fight against PARENTS in a housing project who had the temerity to object to his DOPE DEALING!

But that's only one part of the story. The other part isn't spoken about as much. There are MILLIONS of rappers out there, white, black, latino and asian. There are almost as many viewpoints as there are people. There are STILL rappers speaking about "empowerment", "achievement" etc. But guess what? After Public Enemy faded out the record  companies UNIFORMLY stopped giving this class of rap, a record deal. That's how it started. As a former music producer and current television and film producer, I can tell you that a LOT has changed. The power structures at the record companies are making sure that ONLY the most ignorant ghetto IDIOTS, rise to power, i.e  50 Cent, Young Jeezy and among others, Jay Zee ( who actually calls himself J-HOVA) get it? Jehovah?

This trend began about the time I gave up music productionin N.Y,  and moved to L.A. so we're talkin' 1992 or so. See, satan had long been luring young white kids to the dark side through Ozzy Osboune, Kiss, the Rolling (sympathy for the devil) Stones, Alistair Crowely acolytes all even the Beatles, see satanist Alistair Crowely's image on the cover of Sgt Pepper Album! So while most of you or your parents thought it was about "Rebellion" it was really about inculcating themes from the Book of Satan into your childrens brains through music. The first law in the book of satan is "Do what thou wilt, shall be the whole of the law", this satanic meme found it's way into the pop culture , through the counter culture movement of the sixties which updated the language a little and hit you with, "It's your thing, do what you wanna do", "free love" etc.  Look at the writings of Anton LeVay founder of the church of satan whose  teachings showed those in the counter culture movement the power of the music.  Sting, a Crowely disciple, Mick Jagger whose body is festooned with pictures of Satan, both helped to push the Beatles, Doors, Hendrix, etc, in that direction so much so that George Harrison said that he wrote "My Sweet Lord" as a way to get the "born again" Christians to worship someone other than Christ! That's why in the middle of the song they stop saying MySweetLord and start saying "hari krishna, hari krishna" but don't take my word for it, watch George Harrison say it himself in the documentary!

Anyhoo, sry for being so long *sigh* again. The same devil that wanted to pervert a generation of whites desired the same for blacks. But because of the oppression that black had endured, remember we're talking about beginning of the music "movement", the hold of the church was too strong for them to sing songs that openly worshipped satan. Just like it's still too strong for them to accept sodomic marriage! White parents had by and large either adopted false christian doctrine or were too busy "finding ourselves", so we weren't alarmed when our kids started looking like CORPSES ( gothic) ,  singing about suicide and wearing upside down crosses and pentagrams.

But the devil had another trick for the blacks, lust. He started some godless perverts like Little Richard, Elvis, Marvin Gaye, etc, to separate them from God through their libido. Only after a significant period and we're talking almost forty years, could satan openly present himself to the blacks through THEIR music. Which he is now doing through DMX who openly worships the number of the beast and of course, The Academy Award Winning group, "Three Six Mafia) get it ? Three sixes.  See their website, notice the young man making the satanic sign of the devil horns, before you say I'm making too much of it.

So after the Public Enemy, Fresh Prince, era we got ICE CUBE, Easy E, NWA and what came to be known as "gangsta rap" where murder was celebrated. The word actually couldn't be used in that context until "Snoop Dog" opened that door with "Murder was the Case" who's video shows him selling his soul to satan for worldly rap fame and beating a murder case.  It's a biography and a two-fer, satanism AND murder!

By this time, young black artists could no longer GET a record deal without calling themselves the N-Word and women "B's" and Ho's!

Much like Ann Coulter makes the case that the crisis of single motherhood was a result of a deliberate attempt to subvert the family, the same  could be said about the music industry as a whole and rap in particular. She just doesn't properly examine what makes the liberals want to destroy the family in the first place! Well, that's my job. That's why we have Fitty, and Jay Z and Young Jeezy! That's why they put them in movies and give them clothing lines, it's how satan is moving the culture.

Sure they'll tell you in a meeting that you have to put LLCOOLJ in the movie because he's a "best selling rapper" and theoretically that should put butts in seats. But if you ever ask them why that doesn't hold true for white artists you'll get a blank look. Mention that a "greatest hits" album from Garth Brooks or Gun's N Roses, sells five times more than ANY rap artist , so how about replacing Colin Farrell with Axel Rose, or Kevin James with Garth Brooks and they stop returning your calls. The rapper named "Common" is reportedly about to co-star in the Legion of Super Heroes as the Green Lantern of all things. *sigh*

Much like the destruction of the family hasn't occurred in a vacuum and was done on purpose, the same is true for the music industry.

I realize that some of you may be fans of some of the artists mentioned. This is not speculation or "judgement".  Watch as each and every thing I said about them is said BY them in "They Sold Their Souls For Rock and Roll", http://webinsi5.webinsite.net/mivastore/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=blessedhope&Category_Code=vid

So Brent while I agree with the deplorable state of not onl black music but music generally, there is nothing that Barack Obama can do. First because he's been put in place by SATAN.   The fact that he just signed the DEATH WARRANTS on millions of BABIES around the world, should tell us that. Or do you think that any man working by the spirit of GOD, would kill a child? The man who is about to normalize homosexual sodomy in the military can't possibly talk "sense" into ANYONE. He would first need to have some.

You wouldn't see "Bill Cosby" doing either of these things. You also don't seem to understand that to Barack (community organizer) Obama, Jay-Zee is not only a "great business man" but he has him on his PLAYLIST!http://www.vh1.com/artists/news/1589934/20080625/springsteen_bruce.jhtml

Barack Obama Reveals His iPod Playlist: Jay-Z, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen ... And Sheryl Crow?

Here's Obambi on the subject of his hero's Jay Zee  and Ludacris etc,  http://www.vh1.com/artists/news/1589934/20080625/springsteen_bruce.jhtml

"I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics," he said, praising Jay-Z, Ludacris and hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons for being "great talents and great businessmen." "But I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music. ... It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves."

He listens to them so he's not likely to correct them. He also applauds them for being "businessmen" as opposed to being, oh say, spreaders of sin and degradation and he believes that they have HELPED SOCIETY!!!! So. Change? I think not.

Black culture needs to change itself!

When the worship of thugs, gangstas and felons is more important than education there is a tremendous problem!  Political correctness tries to prohibit white people from discussing this but the problems exist nonetheless.  7 of 10 black children are born to single mothers.  High school dropout rates are epidemic among black youth.  Making good grades is "actin' white."  Black males, while 6% of the population, are responsible for over 50% of violent crimes.  Blacks need to do better.  They alone are responsible for the decisions they make.  But we all pay the price!

I hope Obama can show black youth that education leads to a much better life than crime and the ghetto.

I wasn't absolving anyone of

I wasn't absolving anyone of their responsibility. I was pointing out things about the record industry and why certain "musicians" are exalted.

Black on black

Black violence and gangsta rap is on the way out, nothing to revolt or complain about now. The Obama dividend.

Hip Hop Violence

Yeah, why is it that these haters whine about the White Devil about perceived injustices when they account for almost ALL of the violence directed towards them?

If America wss as racist as they claim, B. Hussein Obama wouldn't have been nominated, much less taken the oath.

Bolton/KEYES 2012

I've always thought........

that the liberal left and their partners in crime the MSM did a horrible disservice to the black community when the did not celebrate Justice Clarence Thomas' seating on the supreme court. Maybe Duh1 could put "My Grandfather's Son" on his reading list.

It is all about ideology.

It is all about ideology. They left was so busy calling him Uncle Thomas, making magazine covers of him as a LAWN JOCKEY and attempting to destroy him with Anita Hill. As they did with Colin Powell and Condi Rice, calling them House Ni----s. Notice how they suddenly love Colin now that he is loving Obama? No black Republicans have ever gotten their support, Michael Steele, JC Watts, or even Alan Keyes. They say it's color, but that has been proven false over and over.
