Ever since liberal media types felt robbed by the Bush-Quayle campaign’s "lies" about Michael Dukakis in 1988, we’ve been suffering through the media elite’s attempts to "police" the facts in advertisements. "Correction" squads are insisting that John McCain can’t say Barack Obama will raise taxes, no matter how much that announcing Democrats will raise taxes is like announcing the sun will rise.
In 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle suggested Bill Clinton would raise taxes on the middle class. Quayle said in the vice presidential debate that everyone over $36,000 could face a tax hike. Media "experts" accused the GOP of mangling "facts." President Clinton was elected – and passed the largest tax increase in American history, right down to the middle class.
"It was Quayle who repeatedly twisted and misstated the facts," CNN reporter Brooks Jackson had pronounced after the vice presidential debate. On ABC, Jeff Greenfield proclaimed: "Independent examination of this charge by, for example, press organizations, has found it, to say the least, misleading."
Do you think "independent" was a good adjective to describe the adoring chorus of Clinton correspondents in 1992?
After the fact – which is to say, when Clinton was safely elected – some in the press developed a sudden sense of guilt.
Cut to February 18, 1993, when USA Today admitted: "Looks like Dan Quayle was right. Last year’s vice presidential debate....produced an accurate prediction from Quayle about the Clinton budget plan....The final plan, according to Clinton officials, will hit those making $30,000 and above."
This is the sticky thing about campaign proposals. They are simply proposals. When a president is elected, the entire campaign manual can be thrown out the window. Predictions about what a politician will do are predictions, not facts. Obviously, some predictions can be wilder, like the suggestion that Ronald Reagan would start a massive war. (Liberals never tire of that one.) Predicting a massive tax hike under Democrats does not qualify as a wild prediction.
This goes not just for debates, but for commercials. The Bush-Quayle campaign issued a TV ad in the fall of 1992 that used their own numerical estimates of how much Clinton would raise taxes, and all the networks leaped on it like starving men on a crust of bread. NBC’s Lisa Myers said "facts" were not on the GOP side: "President Bush’s new ad portrays Bill Clinton as a big taxer and a danger to the middle class...That’s misleading. In fact [here we go with that nettlesome word again], Clinton has proposed cutting taxes to the sort of people in this ad." In 20-20 hindsight, the fact is that Lisa Myers ended up with egg on her face.
Eric Engberg, the infamous CBS blowhard, was worse, and his producer encouraged Steven Colford of Advertising Age to denounce the ad starkly: "I think it’s lying." If anyone was lying about Clinton, it ended up being CBS. Engberg continued: "Clinton's ad squad, aware that the unanswered attacks look true, struck back within 24 hours." He aired a Clinton claim that "George Bush has had the worst economic record of any President in the past 50 years" – but this time, he simply refused to assess the accuracy of that ludicrous groaner (two words: Jimmy Carter) or anything else in the Clinton response.
In 2008, reporters and columnists touting Obama are repeatedly citing numbers by something called the Tax Policy Center – and you’ll never hear that this is a project operated by two liberal-Democrat think tanks – to suggest Obama will actually cut middle-class taxes more than John McCain. That, of course, assumes that President Obama will follow his plan to the letter, and that a newly elected liberal House and Senate will rubber-stamp his alleged tax cut for "95 percent" of Americans. That, by the way, is a serious math error. Please explain how it’s possible to cut 95 percent of Americans’ taxes when the Tax Foundation reports that 40 percent of Americans don’t pay any income tax. If you think you can, I’d like to interest you in a sub-prime mortgage. This math apparently is too sophisticated for the guardians of "fact," who are nowhere to be found.
When Democrats claim they’ll be more generous in tax-cutting, does anyone believe a liberal-dominated Washington is going to do less taxing and spending than the Bush administration?
There’s nothing wrong with the media suggesting that the Republican candidate is refusing to accept the genuineness of the Democratic candidate’s proposal. But if they suggest McCain is lying or misleading voters, they’re in danger of walking off yet another cliff of credibility if and when President Obama and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi get to cook their own ever-expanding federal budget pie.

truth
September 30, 2008 - 18:56 ET by respectfulconservativeOverall Barack Obama will raise taxes and McCain will cut them. To state this is to state the facts.
I think most media types are merely trying to communicate that Obama's stated intention is to cut taxes for those making under 250,000 dollars a year (the vast majority of us). We don't know if Obama will keep his word, but there is little doubt that as announced his biggest tax cuts go to middle class and poor Americans while the bulk of McCain's go to the wealthy.
McCain can justify this tax cut for the rich with Reaganesque conservative supply-side economics, but he should at least admit it exists. This would make the debate smarter.
Who knows how either will behave once in office? McCain especially will likely face a tough vote in a democrat led congress if he tries for big tax cuts in the middle of this crisis.
not so true there.
September 30, 2008 - 20:26 ET by kdizzydazeYour first statement is right on. Obama will raise taxes and McCain will lower them.
However, as for McCain's tax cuts going to the wealthy while Obama's will go to the middle class is simply incorrect. McCain's tax cuts (if he can even get them pased) will be determined based on the amount each person pays to the government. In essence, if McCain were to cut taxes by, say 10%, then the guy (or girl) who pays $50k in taxes will get a $5k refund while the person who pays $10k will get a $1k refund. The person who pays nothing, gets nothing. Simple, straightforward and fair. Pleaes note that people who make over $250k pay roughly 40% in federal taxes right off the top as it currently stands - that's $100k to the fed. This does not include medicaid, social security, and possible state taxes they might have to pay. That is alot of cake for someone to be bringing to the party yet Obama wants more and here is how:
Obama's intention is to give money to those who do not pay taxes while taking more from the existing taxpayer base. How? Simply by taking more from those who already pay the bulk of federal income taxes - and not just the wealthy (those making more than $250k/year), as they are called and transfering those monies to those that do not pay taxes. In a simple scenario, under Obama, someone who pays $50k in taxes now might be required to pay an addtional $5k while the person who pays nothing in taxes might then get $2k in government payouts. There is a simple term for this, it's called redistribution of wealth.
A bit rhetorical, but what would make someone who gets money from the government in a manner as described in the Obama plan above (an entitlement as they have come to be known) want to work? Hell, we've had a "war on poverty" for over forty years now (thank you LBJ) and all we have to show for it is $7 Trillion (yup, Trillion) in taxpayer dollars going down the toilet and an ever increasing welfare class. Wow, all of a sudden the cost of the war in Iraq ain't so bad (factoid -- if you take the money spent on the war in Iraq and stretch it over 40 years, it pales in comparison to the amount spent on the war on poverty). Also, did you know that we now have second and third generation welfare recipients with no intention of getting off the public dole? Yikes.
Additionally, when Obama has bled the taxpayers as much as he can without public outcry yet still needs more money to pay for the socialist programs he envisions, he will resort to raising taxes on businesses (apparently, one of his plans is to tax small businesses at a rate of up to 62% on profits). Regardless of the amount of increase, Obama does plan to raise taxes on business and it truly appears to be the only way to pay for even a fraction of his social programs. What do you think those businesses will then do to offset those increased taxes? Absorb them? Probably not. I would think that they would offset these increased taxes by raising prices on the good's they sell to us, the consumer and/or lay off or simply not hire more people. Simply put, those increased taxes to the business will mean you and I pay more for everything from groceries to clothing to office supplies.
You are respectful, and as such, I politely disagree with you on your statement in regards to McCain and taxes.
By the way, if you want to see liberal wealth redistibution in action, just take a look at the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac mess we are now embroiled in.

September 30, 2008 - 20:58 ET by SmartypantsNice summary. I got into an argument with someone online about two weeks ago over this same issue. It was an Obama supporter who insisted that we'd all get tax cuts under Obama, but nothing under McCain. No ultra-liberal Democrat, like Barack Obama, who is playing with a Dem-controlled legislature is going to cut taxes, certainly not on 95% of the people. I think it was outrageous that McCain did not call him out on the impossibility of this tax cut in light of Obama's social programs as well as the current fiscal crisis. McCain could have slammed Obama to the turf on this issue; yet he warbled about earmarks and moved on. (The average viewer of that debate does not have the patience to understand "earmarks;" they do understand "tax cuts to all" though.

What is wrong with tax cuts for those who achieve in America.
If we can't get the Fair Tax, then EVERYONE should pay the SAME rate. 15% would be a good number. A person making $10,000.00 would pay $1500.00, a person making $100,000.00 would pay $15,000.00 and a person making $1,000,000.00 would pay $150,000.00.
Wha's wrong with that?

I told here that is impossible because(and I even said it this way) around 50% of Amercans don't even pay taxes...they get a bonus refund. Which is wealth redistribution. She rolls her liberal eyes and tells me I just speak Repub numbers and I need to do some research....she watches the View and the Today show. She is informed she says. I told her to go to IRS.gov adn look up the numbers......they won't lie to her. She says she doesn't have time to play my games.
Unfortunately too many others in this country think like her....and she has a Masters Degree. So she is certified brainwashed.

September 30, 2008 - 19:59 ET by SmartypantsSorry, baddass, but your wife, like many liberals, is afraid of facts. She is more attracted to emotional arguments and thought. She can be saved, but it is not an overnight endeavor. Converting someone from an emotion-based to a critical thinker takes years. Keep at it; she will eventually see the light (too late for this year though)

Yup, with most liberals stating facts is like saying, "Lalalalalalalalala." Ignorance is bliss - it's easier to repeat a mindless slogan than to do some actual research.
It took me about 15 years to convert my brother. His girlfriend thought she was a liberal. It took him about 6 months to convince her otherwise. She just needed to be educated, and was willing to listen. Every time she made a statement like, "I don't want the government in my life," he made it a teaching moment.
MSM - shaping all the perceptions you need to believe, then confirming it with a poll.

My heart goes out to you. I went through the same crap with my ex-wife. She could care less about facts, if all her liberal friends said the sky was falling, then she was the first one to volunteer to go and protest over it. She called me onetime to bail her out of jail because she got arrested in SC for refusing to leave private property during a protest she was involved in. Anyway, I just laughed and hung up the phone. Now you know just one of the reasons why she is my ex.
