NBC's Gregory Blames Angle's Loss on...Dissing the News Media; Whitaker: GOP Tax Plan 'Numbers Do Not Add Up'

By Brent Baker | November 03, 2010 | 02:59

Just after NBC News called Nevada for incumbent Democratic Senator Harry Reid, Meet the Press host David Gregory credited his victory to how “Tea Party-backed” Sharron Angle disrespected journalists, citing how she “made some very unwise decisions, namely, saying things like 'I'm not going to give any interviews until after I'm elected.'” Gregory contended: “I don't think that inspires a great deal of confidence in independent voters, or any voter for that matter.”

Later in the 1:00 AM EDT hour, anchor Brian Williams asked NBC News Washington Bureau Chief Mark Whitaker to explain “what's wrong” with the promise by Republican candidates to cut spending? Whitaker channeled a liberal argument in favor of hiking taxes, declaring “the fact is right now the Republican numbers do not add up” since House Republicans want to roll back “spending to 2008 levels, which gets you about a $100 billion, but extending all the tax cuts. And the Congressional Budget Office has said that ends up adding $270 billion, at least, to the deficit.”

Earlier: “NBC's Brokaw & Williams Throw a Wet Blanket on Tea Party: They're About to Bump Into Reality”

From the 1:00 AM EDT hour of NBC's Decision 2010 coverage on Tuesday night November 2/Wednesday morning November 3:

DAVID GREGORY, ON REID:

He was up against a Tea Party-backed candidate who made some very unwise decisions, namely, saying things like 'I'm not going to give any interviews until after I'm elected.' I don't think that inspires a great deal of confidence in independent voters, or any voter for that matter. So, this is a big one here.”

....

BRIAN WILLIAMS: We've heard guest after guest tonight, and winner after winner, saying we're going to go to Washington and cut spending. What's the problem with that?

MARK WHITAKER: Well, you know, we've been talking about the role of independents and independents, after the economy and after jobs, the thing that they really care about is the deficit and debt and the fact is right now the Republican numbers do not add up on this. The Pledge to America that Boehner and the Young Guns ran on basically calls for rolling back spending to 2008 levels, which gets you about a $100 billion, but extending all the tax cuts. And the Congressional Budget Office has said that ends up adding $270 billion, at least, to the deficit.

So, I think what we're going to see, starting with the press conference tomorrow that President Obama's going to give, is challenging the Republicans to say what are you going cut not only in terms of programs, but what else are you going to put on the table? Are you cutting further than you're talking about? Are you talking about Social Security? Are you talking about Medicare? Put the ball in their court and I think that's where the battle begins.

Strange, I thought it was the democraps who cut FIVE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS from medicare and who have all but eliminated Medicare Advantage. DICK Gregory must have altzheimers.

As for the 'numbers not adding up'. It is ridiculous for Gregory to claim that there has only been 100 Billion in additional spending from 2008 to 2010 (budget would only be reduced by 100B if spending levels reverted to 2008). Where did the THREE TRILLION DOLLARS in deficits and national debt come from during that same time period? How did 100 Billion in additional spending cause a FIVE percent rise in the Government's share of the GDP in the past two years? Seem like if we reduce by 5 percent of GDP, the Government's spending, that would pay for the tax cuts in and of itself.

Submitted by TE on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 7:17pm.

NBC's "coverage" of the elections last night was identical to A-Mess-NBC's "coverage".  Both were undiluted, endless parades of leftist freakshow freaks agreeing to each other's boilerplate, idiotic leftism.

A-Mess-NBC featured Rachel Madcow, Keith Olbermoronn, Chris "Tingles" Matthews, Fairy O'Donnell and that "Ed" dude.

NBC featured David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell, Mark Whitaker, Tom Brokaw and one other identically minded leftist political activist.

Angle didn't lose because she dissed the media...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 7:32pm.

She lost because she was never a good candidate. I always thought that she was a lightweight, and wasn't always the sharpest knife in the drawer. I was never much impressed with her, and wished that the Repubs/Tea Party had put forth a better, stronger candidate against Reid. Last night was fabulous, but I dearly wish that we had gotten rid of Reid...Hopefully, we'll gain control of the Senate in '12, and that will be the end of Reid being majority leader, once and for all.

Prairie, I don't know how

Submitted by Chris Norman on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 8:12pm.

Prairie,

I don't know how you felt about Karl Rove's comments regarding Christine O'Donnell that got him lambasted by many here. I felt he was correct and was just stating the unpleasant truth that she, as a candidate in a general election, just wasn't ready for prime time. I felt the same way about Sharron Angle. True, they both won in the primaries fair and square, but the fact remains that they were just not the candidates to win the election - if anybody could.

The kind of Republican

Submitted by Chris Norman on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 10:46pm.

The kind of Republican necessary to win a Senate race in these navy blue states like DE, MA, CA, etc. are what are called RINOs by a lot of people. These states are just too urban, unionized, government dependent, or whatever to be competible by conservatives. The best we can hope for in these states is maybe a stray House seat here or there.

Sharron Angle tried to do something that you haven't  : She tried to make a difference.  Instead of denigrating her valiant efforts to help restore the Constitution and the limited Republic it established, you ought to devote your energy to this same cause.

Submitted by porpoiseboy on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 11:26pm.

to criticize and some may be valid....but what ever happened to regular peeps who ran on character and morals and could win an election?  i am sick of the karl roves, newt gingriches, et al.  and all their equals on the left.  i reckon the founders would have never guessed.  i mean you serve, you do your time, and you go back home and make your living.  the fact that we the peeps have allowed the "professionalizing" of politics means we gets what we gets.  when you make that someone's profession, what do you expect them to do except try to keep their job?  i still not only blame both sides, but i will believe "change" when i see it.  politicos have fooled the sheeple into believing that what they do is so scary hard that it takes a pro to do iti.  just ask jerry "moonbeam" brown of cali......i heard him say that exact thing.

it's truly disappointing that harry reid won his seat back, and will continue to be majority leader.  but although i have no evidence to make this accusation, he just seems crooked to me and this incident with the seiu doesn't smell right.

with the voting equipment in Nevada immediately, why is this election race considered to done.   In the first few hours there were several stories of strange machines and strange voting ballots?

Considering the amount of cheating the last election, it's not a big leap to suggest the same and more perfected, is going on here and now.
