On Maher, Rob Reiner Equates Tea Party to Hitler: ‘All They're Selling is Fear and Anger and That's All Hitler Sold’

By Brent Baker | October 23, 2010 | 08:06

Prefacing his remarks by proposing “you never get into a political discussion unless you bring the word Hitler in. You have to have Hitler, so let's put Hitler out there,” as if that caveat lessened the vulgarity of his impending comparison, on Friday night’s Real Time actor/director/writer Rob Reiner (IMDb page) contended all the Tea Party needs to match Adolph Hitler is a charismatic leader:

He wasn’t a majority guy, but he was charismatic and they were having bad economic times – just like we are now – people were out of work, they needed jobs and a guy came along and rallied the troops. My fear is that the Tea Party gets a charismatic leader, because all they're selling is fear and anger and that's all Hitler sold. “I’m angry and I’m frightened and you should hate that guy over there.”

“Right,” Bill Maher chirped in as Reiner, to applause from HBO's Los Angeles audience, declared: “And that’s what they’re doing.”

(Apparently, that means he at least doesn’t consider Sarah Palin to be a Hitler-like charismatic leader.) Audio: MP3 clip.

Shortly before, as he sat between Nicole Wallace and ABC News White House reporter Jake Tapper as the panel discussed Christine O’Donnell’s supposed ignorance about how “separation of church and state” is in the First Amendment, Reiner denigrated Tea Party candidates: “They're selling stupidity, they’re selling stupidity and ignorance and I've never seen a group of people, I’ve never seen an election cycle with more ignorance than this one.”

Maher agreed: “You’re right. I have not either – much to my delight.”

From the Friday, October 22 Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO:

ROB REINER: You never get into a political discussion unless you bring the word Hitler in. You have to have Hitler, so let’s put Hitler out there. Here’s Hitler, okay? You have bad economic times, right? Hitler, by the way, never got more than 33 percent of the vote ever in Germany. You have bad economic times-

BILL MAHER: Well, he only had that one election, let’s be honest.

REINER: Yeah, right.

MAHER: Hitler never ran for re-election.

REINER: No, that’s true, that’s true.

MAHER: There was no 1937 election.

REINER: He wasn’t a majority guy, but he was charismatic and they were having bad economic times -- just like we are now – people were out of work, they needed jobs and a guy came along and rallied the troops. My fear is that the Tea Party gets a charismatic leader, because all they're selling is fear and anger and that's all Hitler sold. “I’m angry and I’m frightened and you should hate that guy over there.”

MAHER: Right.

REINER: And that’s what they’re doing.

(Audience applause)

Here's an idea: Whey doesn't someone hammer every single Lib talking head on Obama's record deficits, record unemployment, record bank failures, record foreclosures, record spending, record number of people on food stamps, record death toll in Afghanistan, record poverty rate, consumer confidence at record lows, longest jobless stretch since the 1930's, failing dollar, disastrous foreign policy...

The Tea KKK Party is made up of people who dress up their racism and anti-semitic beliefs as anger against the government. Their heritage thinks blacks are not human, hispanics are full of deseases and native american kids are monsters. They're plain racist disguised as anti-goverment radicals. They are mad because hispanics can vote, blacks in professionals settings and native american get rich off white man's crack (Casinos). They still believe they should never get layed off, they should have preference regardless of qualification over non-whites and they think somewhere down the line JESUS named them the SELECT human race. They claim the 14th amendment, does not apply anymore. Under that mentality, nor does the 2nd amendment. Under that same mentality, taxation without representation also needs to be amended. Some people who pay taxes can't vote right now. Bottom line, these people HATE America for electing a non-white President and seek revenge against America for electing a non-white man as President

Talk about a one-note samba.....

During the Bush years, didn't Pelosi state that there were something like 200 million unemployed twice in the same speech?

Reiner's fear-mongering says less about Tea Parties and more about the weaknesses of the parliamentary system of  government so admired by the Left.

  • The NSDAP (Nazis) never won more than 37% of the vote (that was in July 1932). They did have 33.1% in the November 1932 vote, and they feared losing their influence.
  • With no coalition forming, backroom deals were cut in December '32 and January '33 to push the NSDAP to the forefront and form the base of a coalition.
  • The senile President von Hindenburg was persuaded to name Hitler as the new Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933, and tasked him with forming a coalition government.
  • Once in power, Hitler enacting emergency powers - both constitutional and dictatorial - allowing the Nazis to seize control and hunt down their political opponents.

Our republic with its three separate branches doesn't facilitate a Nazi-like coup so easily, and an armed populace is the ultimate guarantor of the Constitution.

If Reiner and Maher had ever studied the Constitution, they might appreciate the distinction.

But when one resorts to fear-mongering in order to define an opponent as fear-mongers, Constitutional issues go out the window.

  What ever happened to

Submitted by Francisco on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 9:00am.

What ever happened to Godwin's Law and reductio ad Hitlerum?   It is really disheartning to watch this insane cheapening of the political discourse oing mainstream. The left-wing complains all the time about the extremism of the right-wing with all their Hitler references and because of that... they compare them to Hitler. The right-wing, on the other hand, replies "how dare you compare us to Hitler!" and then in the next breath "Because YOU are Hitler!"... Its like a Hitler-references "arms race"...   The left-wing probably started it in recent times with all that "Bushitler" crap, but now it is really getting out of hand on both sides..   I honestly, really, truly doubt any reasonable person can find any relevant link between any entity in the current political process and Hitler so it would be really great to see it banished once and for all from modern political discourse. And if you disagree you're just a Nazi yourself..

Godwin"s Law

Submitted by NevadanConservative on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 10:20am.

Herewith the wikipedia citation for Godwin's Law.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_Law

The left will probably want a parallel 'law' calling anything/anyone that cites socialism/marxism/communism as no longer 'debate-worthy', as the left doesn't want to draw attention to the things one of their more 'successful' demigods did. Call it Pobedabog's Law.(Godwin in Russian)

Already been done, by the way, in  1984, as both doublethink and crimestop.

As to Francisco's desire to 'see it banished once and for  all from modern political discourse'... Um, bub, that set of ripples in your frufru white tea next to your Belgian endive salad there? Them's the vibrations from the bone saws we are about to apply to your ivory tower.

Come on down from those rarefied heights and get more oxygen... besides, you'll be liable to be more intact when we finish with that tower.

I mean, be real. The fight for one side to impose its dictatorial will on us and the other side to resist it is dirty, sweaty, nasty, and mean. To quote..."The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits..."

Most of the folk in here are willing to take the hits and get down and wallow if that is what it takes. We want to keep the authoritarians off of our necks, out of our wallets, away from our children and (might as well say it) back in their cages. If that offends your tender sensibilities, then clearly you are in the wrong website.

Went a little long here...

On the contrary, a web site

Submitted by Francisco on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 3:27pm.

On the contrary, a web site where replies come in the form of Rocky quotes is exactly the right web site for me... As for the rest, I see your point, I just think a-) it's completely unnecessary, both from a political and intelectual point of view. The libertarian viewpoint will win in the end, by force of argument, not of demagogic fear and b-) it's very distracting from the real issues at stake ,deficit, the economy, personal freedom and responsabilty, role of the state, etc. But hey, whatever works...  The commie references are highly hyperbolic, but at least they have some logic (however overstreched) behind them..  Nazi references are simply blood libel.. And I have to say, you know your salads,Mr.

How can you say it is unnecssary to point out the parallels?  Do you not realize how easily history can be re-writen by the ones who write the text books?

The Libertarian view will not just "win", if that was true it would have already just "won," in case you haven't noticed approximately half of the voters in the US (granted, many of them are dead, but still) are not interested in logic or the force of argument.

The only difference between the communists and the nazis was that one used 7.62mm ammo while the other used 7.92mm ammo to kill those who disagreed.  They are not opposites as the people I mentioned in the first paragraph have falsely taught for years, they are competitive siblings.  And the current regime bears striking similarities to both.

No, they're actually right.  When the uneducated in the electorate get whipped into a frenzy by a fear-mongering charismatic individual, bad things tend to happen.  People will vote for someone they know nothing about, who then turns out to be very, very bad for the country, and sometimes the world.

 See "Obama, 2008".

As for the Tea Party, several surveys have now shown that their members are, on average, better educated than liberals. Where does that leave Mahervis and Meathead?

Hmmmm. Why does the left like actors so much...

Submitted by c5then on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 11:27am.

Well, it's simple realy. Actors have a talent for taking other people's fiction (script lines) and making it believable. Over the years they tend to get confused as to what they believe and who they are with the roles that they've played and the lines that they have acted.

Think about this...LA and the surrounding area are so think with these multi-millionairs that it ought to have the lowest rate of homlessness and have the highest concentration of charities in the WORLD! It doesn't. Hollywood itself has one of the highest homeless populations per capita in the country. Why are these multi-millionaires not donating some of their HUGE wealth to provide for the needs in their own community where most of them work? Where is their personal responsibility? NYC has a similar concentration of "stars". Why does NYC have similar problems?

Where is the Rob Reiner homeless center? Where is the Angelina Jolie Free Community health center? Where is the Tom Cruise Children's hospital? Where is the Barbara Streisand school for the Performing Arts? etc. etc....

Why are they scared that the country will turn back toward a Constitutional Republic like our founders gave us, instead of this Socialist Democracy that we have started to turn into?

Madison and Jefferson and Franklin built a Republic - Roberts killed it!

She's the former "McCain senior strategist" Nicole Wallace.  I saw another clip from this show where Maher says "this election has the biggest collection of morons we've ever seen" and she sits there nodding in agreement.  We know who Maher means.  And Nicole Wallace is the "insider" who post election was thought to have leaked that Sarah Palin "thought Africa was a country" and answered her hotel room guests wearing only a towel.

I couldn't sit through that show with a gun to my head.

"My fear is that the Tea Party gets a charismatic leader, because all they're selling is fear and anger and that's all Hitler sold. “I’m angry and I’m frightened and you should hate that guy over there.”

Read that with "Democrat" replacing "Tea" and you have the last election cycle!  The dumbocraps couldn't have picked a bigger numbnut than Barack Hussein Obama, and that's saying something in that party, and the bastard wins because of "Hope and Change?"

... and Meathead's next brilliant statement:

"I’ve never seen an election cycle with more ignorance than this one.”

Ahhhhh, was he struck blind the last cycle?

Face it folks.  Barack Hussein Obama is a rat bastard Fascist son of a bitch, and we're stuck with him for two more long years.  I just hope the hell we can survive it.  Our best hope is that, unlike Hitler, The One hasn't figured out how to disarm us yet.  Obviously he ain't as brilliant as they think he is, or he wouldn't have overlooked that little detail that every good dictator knows.

Just to correct a few stats

Submitted by Galvanic on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 12:55pm.

ROB REINER: Hitler, by the way, never got more than 33 percent of the vote ever in Germany. You have bad economic times-

Actually, the Nazis won 37% of the vote in July 1932, and 33% in November 1932.  After Hitler became Chancellor, another election was held in March 1933 in which the Nazis garnered 43% of the vote.

BILL MAHER: Well, he only had that one election, let’s be honest.

REINER: Yeah, right.

MAHER: Hitler never ran for re-election.

REINER: No, that’s true, that’s true
.

Technically, the Nazis ran in about a half dozen elections.  There was even an election after Hitler came to power as Chancellor, though there is little doubt that had the results been unfavorable to the Nazis, they would have completed the dissolution of the last vestiges of Weimar.

Meathead redux

Submitted by rammingspeed on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 4:01pm.

Hollwood sh*tipes are getting boring. Hitler was (of course) an insane tyrant whose followers did his murderous bidding (in public, with photos of hanging bodies published in Der Steurmer). He was kinda like a big government guy - with a kick. Tea Partiers are anti-big government and I believe it's no coincidence that there is no "leader." Hitler, and his crew, and the Tea Party couldn't be more ideologically different. Now, we all know that, but Hollywood sh*tpies don't. How come? What makes them so otherwise high level with brainpower, but so off the wall with reality? Meathead just kicked his own teeeth down his throat.

The American Thinker has an excellent article...

Submitted by stage9 on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 4:23pm.

on this very subject.

Kyle-Anne Shiver outlines the tactics used by liberals to silence their opposition in his article "Barack Obama, the Quintessential Liberal Fascist":

"[P]erhaps the most cunning propaganda feat in history has been undertaken for the past 8 years.  As Jonah Goldberg expertly expounds in his book, Liberal Fascism, American left-wing ideologues have managed to dissociate themselves from all the horrors of fascism with a "brilliant rhetorical maneuver."  They've done it by "claiming that their opponents are the fascists."

Alinsky himself employed this method, quite deviously.  Alinsky biographer, Sanford D. Horwitt provides an anecdote using precisely this diabolical tactic to deceive the people.  From Horwitt's Let Them Call Me Rebel:

"...in the spring of 1972, at Tulane University...students asked Alinsky to help plan a protest of a scheduled speech by George H. W. Bush, then U.S. representative to the United Nations - a speech likely to include a defense of the Nixon administration's Vietnam War policies.  The students told Alinsky they were thinking about picketing or disrupting Bush's address.  That's the wrong approach, he rejoined, not very creative - and besides causing a disruption might get them thrown out of school.  He told them, instead, to go to hear the speech dressed as members of the Ku Klux Klan, and whenever Bush said something in defense of the Vietnam War, they should cheer and wave placards reading, ‘The KKK supports Bush.'  And that is what they did, with very successful, attention-getting results."

Shiver continues:

Alinsky includes an entire section in Rules for Radicals on "The Ideology of Change."  The watchword of the Obama campaign was "change."  Just as Hitler mobilized the masses with a calculatingly undefined demand for "change," so did Alinsky disciple, Barack Obama.

"Everything must be different!" or "Alles muss anders sein!," Hitler's own campaign slogan, morphed into "Unite for Change," and the Obama transition team's change.gov.  Even the idea of a vast "movement" was borrowed from Hitler.  As Goldberg states, Hitler used the phrase, "the Movement," more than 200 times in Mein Kampf.

The word ‘movement' itself is instructive.  Movement, unlike progress, doesn't imply a fixed destination.  Rather, it takes it as a given that any change is better. (Goldberg; Liberal Fascism; p. 176)

This article is well worth the read. It exposes the illusory lies of the liberal machine.

stage9...

I find it kind of funny that the far-left accuses conservatives of being fascists AND anti-government extremists at the same time. Somehow, not only are we racist, sexist, homophobe, islamophobe, xenophobe, etc. we're also TOTALITARIAN ANARCHISTS!

Oh, and I've also read a few liberal blogs accusing us of being radical nationalist/imperialists who hate America. Yeah, try not to think about that for too long.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

Stone cold hypocrisy

Submitted by Agnostic on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 5:03pm.

Don't forget according to Oliver Stone Hitler is widely misunderstood and also, “(Hitler) did far more damage to the Russians than the Jewish people, 25 or 30 million. Hitler was a Frankenstein, but there was also a Dr. Frankenstein -- German industrialists, the Americans and the British. He had a lot of support.”

You don't need consistancy.  Or maybe Reiner thinks the Tea Party is just misunderstood.

Hitler/Nazi comparisons

Submitted by Phryj1 on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 4:33pm.

Okay, if MEATHEAD wants to go there, let's do this...

Barack Obama, a man who coasted his way into the presidency based on charisma, cult of personality, and promises of hope and fundamental changes.

The Progressives, a small but aggressively power hungry political faction that strongarmed it's way into control of the Democratic party, thanks to Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi.

Obama is supported by union thugs, rioters, and violent leftist militants who have used threats, intimidation, and assaults against the opposition.

A compliant media that happily promotes and propagandizes the Progressives and their agenda.

Attempting to completely silence the opposition through spreading disinformation, false accusations, and fearmongering.

Keeping themselves in power by changing laws, filing lawsuits, ensuring they have oversight of elections, doing nothing to prevent voter fraud in their favor, and other underhanded tactics.

Some more food for thought, Obama wants to set up a "civilian security force", presumably drawing personnel from his supporter thugs. He wants his own Sturmabteilung.

Hey, Meathead! Why don't you take a good, long look at the party you support? In case you haven't noticed, it's been hijacked by folks who are doing a pretty good job of emulating the Nazis and other authoritarian regimes. Who's ignorant now?

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.
