Amanpour: Tea Party an ‘Extreme’ Departure from Reagan’s Conservatism; Campaign Spending Bad for Democracy

By Brent Baker | October 17, 2010 | 14:21

ABC’s Christiane Amanpour on Sunday discovered “a long and venerable tradition of conservatism in this country” exemplified by Ronald Reagan and William F. Buckley and “all of that sort of intellectual conservatism,” but she only showed respect for that tradition in order to contend “people,” who she failed to name, “are saying that right now, it's really gone to the extreme.” Repeating her “people” generality, she insisted: “People are looking at the Tea Party and saying this is not conservatism as we knew it but it's extreme.”

George Will retorted: “Which is exactly what they said about Bill Buckley and Bill Buckley's candidate, Barry Goldwater, who was supposedly representing the paranoid style in American politics.”

Later, during the October 17 roundtable, Amanpour fretted: “Where is campaign finance reform?” Will called the lack of legislative prospects on that front be “an absolutely wonderful development this year,” to which an appalled Amanpour wondered: “How can that be wonderful for a democracy, I mean not to know where all of this money comes from and who is putting it in?”

Will informed her: “What you're talking about with the amount of money is speech and the question is do you have to notify the government before you can speak on politics?” Amanpour then cited what a liberal Supreme Court justice told a liberal reporter: “The former Justice Stevens told Nina Totenberg, that you know, money doesn't speak.”

Amanpour’s citing of Reagan to discredit the Tea Party echoed the formulation forwarded Tuesday night by Jon Stewart. On the October 12 Daily Show, Stewart proposed to Republican Congressman Eric Cantor, one of the so-called “Young Guns” out with a new book:

Would Reagan be allowed to be a Republican these days, given the fact that he created an expanded federal government, he raised taxes like eight times, including presiding over the largest tax increase in the history of the country in 1982. He went after nuclear weapons and wanted to rid the world of them. Would he be allowed to be a Republican in the new Young Guns world?

From the October 17 This Week with Christiane Amanpour:

CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR: I mean there's been a long and venerable tradition of conservatism in this country. You can go back at least to Ronald Reagan, William F. Buckley, all of that sort of intellectual conservatism that lasted about 30 years, and people are saying that right now, it's really gone to the extreme. People are looking at the Tea Party and saying this is not conservatism as we knew it but it's extreme.

GEORGE WILL: Which is exactly what they said about Bill Buckley and Bill Buckley's candidate, Barry Goldwater, who was supposedly representing the paranoid style in American politics.

AMANPOUR: Reagan had moderates on his, as Vice President and in his cabinet.

TERRY MORAN: Different Republican Party. Hard times make anxious people do extreme things sometimes. If you look at the Tea Party constitution, if there is such a thing, at Joe Miller in Alaska saying unemployment compensation is unconstitutional, at the emphasis on the tenth amendment which is a very vague amendment which they want return power, power returned to the states, this is going to be a real challenge for the Republican Party going forward and it's born of this anxiety.

....

CLIP OF VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: All these guys who are Republicans voted against disclosure. What's wrong with disclosure? Just tell us where the money’s coming from. What's the problem? What is the problem? Why can't the chamber say, these are where the contributions are coming from. Why can't Karl Rove tell us where the contributions are coming from? Just disclosure. Just tell us where. Show me. Show me.

MORAN: Well, “where is the outrage?” Bob Dole once said in a losing campaign about campaign finance in some ways, and by focusing on process as they are, by trying to make an issue, they think that they have struck a populist note that might tap into some of the anxiety that's out there. But it is off point in some ways.

MATTHEW DOWD: I think the problem that this reminds me of Captain Renault in Casablanca when he walked in and said, “I'm shocked, I'm shocked that gambling’s going on here.” These are the same folks that benefited from secret funds in 2008 and 2006 and 2004 and the average American out there thinks both parties do this, they both fund these things and why aren't you talking about how many jobs are going to get created, why aren’t you defending the health care bill that you passed, why aren’t you doing these things on policy instead of a process argument?

AMANPOUR: But also campaign finance reform was something that your own father [referring to Megan McCain] took up and, yes, both sides may have been doing it, but isn't transparency something that we all are demanding in every, in every way. I mean, where is campaign finance reform You think it’s dead?

WILL: Dead

AMANPOUR: Dead in the water.

WILL: Stake through it’s heart.

AMANPOUR: I know you don't like it at all.

WILL: An absolutely wonderful development this year is the rolling back-

AMANPOUR: How can that be wonderful for a democracy, I mean not to know where all of this money comes from and who is putting it in?

WILL: What you’re talking about with the amount of money is speech and the question is do you have to notify the government before you can speak on politics?

AMANPOUR: The former Justice Stevens told Nina Totenberg, that you know, money doesn't speak.

WILL: Well, almost all money in politics is spent on disseminating political advocacy. That’s just a fact. Now, Mr. Biden in the narrative from the Democrats has been, this is secret money that the Koch brothers are putting into it. Well, get your stories straight. Do we know who these guys are? I mean some of them are about as anonymous as George Soros.

MORAN: But a lot of them are anonymous and there is an irony here that the Chamber of Commerce and others ought to be held accountable for. At the Supreme Court, when that case came before the Supreme Court, business interests said, take these shackles off us because disclosure will essentially fix the problem. If the people know where the money is coming from, that will be fine, and right now there is a problem with transparency. Sunshine’s the best disinfectant.

Christiane the anti-Christian

This from a woman who equates Christians to radical Islamics.  She has contempt for Western civilization and its ideas.

. . . the names of all who contributed to their campaign in 2008?

There were plenty of ambiguities.  One woman was credited with contributing over $170,000 to the campaign -- well exceeding the limit of $2300 -- and when she was contacted, she said that she hadn't contributed a single dollar.

But as the libs and the MSM like to say, "Let's move forward."

Flipping through the Sunday

Submitted by jdhawk on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 2:53pm.

Flipping through the Sunday commentator shows, the dimocrat meme is that the Republican candidates are "extreme."  That's all they've got . . .

Meanhwile, does a Angle in NV asking Reid how does a liftetime civil servant become a multi-millionaire and Reid won't answer the question, extreme?

O'Donnell asked Coons in DE if he is a Markists and he won't answer, but O'Donnell is the extreme one?  By the way, after the debate according to Rasmussen, O'Donnell cut her loss numbers almost in half from a 20 point deficit to a 11 point deficit.

Then there is the meme that the money that Republicans are receiving for their campaigns is somehow tainted or dirty, but the dimocrats money is pure as the wind driven snow.  Yet, they won't reveal who their donors are, but insist that where there isn't any legislation to compel us to do so, that we do so anyway.

Again, this is the "strategy" going into the final weeks of the campaign.  That's it . . .

Our strategy ought to be to get out the vote to as many Republicans and Independents that will join us and vote conservative.

You all, in most states can vote early.  Do so.  Don't wait until November 2.  If we can get enough of a lead in early voting which will start to be reported on in a couple of weeks, we can bring to these campaigns a terrific psychological edge to the races.

Get out and vote - I was going to say get out and vote often, but I am sure that is the dimocrate strategy already!

How can this be wonderful for democracy if we do not know who to attack, smear and intimidate....?   She never had a problem with it before.   Why was that ?    Oh...that's right,   it was Democrats raising all that untraceable cash and she thought it was wonderful.     I have to say that I just can't get enough of listening to all the lefties whining about  how unfair it is that they are going to be crushed in two weeks.   It is so funny listening to them begging the Chamber of Commerce for some mercy and to  just please please please release those donor lists so they can have a fighting chance.

Make all campaigns report all donations, no matter how big or small. One dollar? Report it, 1 million? Report it. 100 million? Report it. Will liberals approve of that? And pass a law that harassment will be punished harshly. So if the SEIU or whatever entity puts people on your lawn it is an automatic lawsuit with millions of dollars of damages and jail time for trespassing. Will liberals like that?

Reagan Revisionism

Submitted by Fenwick on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 7:44am.

I'm not sure if it's that they don't understand Reagan as much as they are trying to misrepresent his views. One needs only to listen to Reagan's numerous speeches, going back to his "Time for Choosing" speech on behalf of Goldwater - or read his diaries - to comprehend that he and the Tea Party movement are in complete agreement. I think that, because Reagan was supremely popular across partisan lines, that ultra-liberals are trying to purposely create confusion about his very clear message of limited federal govenment and responsible spending.

The whole Tea Party movement is a resurgence of the Reagan Revolution and progressives know that better than anyone - which is why they're trying to undermine it with lies and misrepresentation (something at which they are quite adept).

Two words: Prop 8. Remember California? That's the end goal, as always -- stop anyone else from speaking besides liberals. Liberals operate in one mode: force. They cannot abide opposing viewpoints, so they move to shut them down. Why?

It is scary for a liberal to be in a world where some things are beyond his or her control, so he/she tries to control as many things and people as possible, so that they cannot introduce information that disturbs a fragile worldview.

Amanpour and her democrap

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 8:49am.

Amanpour and her democrap socialists weren't 'fretting about all that undisclosed and foreign money being bad for democracy' (well we're a republic but that's a different issue) when Obama's team disabled their credit card security on their website, so as to allow gazillions of foreigners to contribute to the democraps' 2008 campaign without worrying about whether or not they were US citizens. The democraps weren't worried about the amount of money Obama and the democraps were raking in in 2008 at all. Or worried about the money the democraps were outspending democraps by in 2008 and how that might be a threat to our 'democracy'. Seems that these 'objective reporters' only get 'worried' when the people reject socialist policies and start voting for republicans and conservatives. Strange, it's almost like liberal media types aren't  objective at all but have a hidden or not so hidden agenda.

BTW, I have to agree with Will, that the only conservatives or republicans who aren't called 'extremists' or 'racists' or other vile names by these democraps-reporters (redundant) are republicans/conservatives who are either (a) dead; (b) impotent; and/or (c) torpedoing republican/ conservative principles and/or policies.

We all know that the real

Submitted by Student1776 on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 1:03pm.

We all know that the real underlying intention of the "disclosure" is intimidation - hence Obama had no complaints about  all the funds that went to him from undisclosed sources because he was getting the money - it is only when people horrified by his transgressions against liberty started donating to his opponents that it became an issue. Free speech should be free. Period. There is no obligation to expose your finances or your sources or anything else. You are free to speak. Others can listen or not as they please. Others are free to ask you about sources and agendas and you are free to respond or not as you please. I don't understand what people like Amanpour don't get about the idea of liberty. The reality is that when you disclose sources then those sources become targets for the Pelosis and Reids and Obamas of the world with their enemy lists not to mention the Amanpours and Colberts and Olbermans and all the other rabid ideologues.
