NBC's Todd Asserts 'Weaker' Tea Party Nominees Give Democrats 'Fighting Chance' to Hold Senate

By Brent Baker | October 15, 2010 | 20:49

Brent Baker's picture

NBC's Chuck Todd conceded “the Tea Party has been helpful to the GOP in both re-branding the party away from Bush and giving it a real grassroots component,” but he insisted, “this Tea Party influence in Republican primaries has put a number of Senate seats in play for Democrats that at this point should be out of reach.”

“The bottom line,” Todd declared on Friday's NBC Nightly News in a likely preview of the latest iteration of the news media's bi-annual “Republicans candidates were too far to the right” line:

Because of weaker Tea Party nominees, Democrats have a fighting chance in Delaware, Kentucky, Colorado, yes, Nevada, and even Alaska. Without the Tea Party, all five of those races would be in the bank right now and the Senate majority would definitely be in the Republican sights.

Of course, in Alaska if the seat is in jeopardy for Republicans it's because of a sore-loser Republican splitting the non-liberal vote. Or maybe not. RealClearPolitics.com contends a Republican will win, whether the GOP nominee, Tea Party-backed Joe Miller, or write-in candidate Lisa Murkowski, the incumbent Republican who has refused to accept the primary verdict:

The latest polls have all shown a close race...between Murkowski and Miller. Murkowski has made plain that she plans to remain a Republican, so with McAdams still mired in the 20s, it looks like Alaska will either send a very conservative Republican or a moderately conservative Republican back to DC this fall.

Flashback to August: “NBC's Todd: Liberal Victory Means 'Hope' But Conservative Wins Will Demonstrate 'Fear'”

Todd's assessment of the campaign landscape, on the Friday, October 15 NBC Nightly News:

Let's go from 30,000 feet. Look, this was a week that the campaign battleground came into focus on three fronts. Money, number one. The Democratic advantage from the summer, gone. The enthusiasm and momentum the Republicans have is playing itself out in fundraising. Just about every close race right now, it's the Republican out-raising the Democrat. The biggest number, of course, is what John Yang reported about, that Sharron Angle number, the all-time record, $14.3 raised million in just three short months, never mind the contribution from outside groups which is far larger for Republicans than Democrats.

Number two, on the issues front, health care is trumping the economy. This is a big debate all over the country as we saw earlier in that report. Eight Senate debates that I watched, there was a common theme. Health care is the most discussed issue, even though the economy comes out on top in polls. Why? Well, the bad economy has set the national mood, but health care is the rhetorical weapon of choice for the Republicans. They use it to tie Democrats to quote “Obamacare,” or make a pot on government overreach or even to say it's the reason why businesses aren't creating jobs.

Then number three, the Tea Party. Look, the impact is real for the most part. The Tea Party has been helpful to the GOP in both re-branding the party away from Bush and giving it a real grassroots component, but this Tea Party influence in Republican primaries has put a number of Senate seats in play for Democrats that at this point should be out of reach. The bottom line, Brian, because of weaker Tea Party nominees, Democrats have a fighting chance in Delaware, Kentucky, Colorado, yes, Nevada, and even Alaska. Without the Tea Party, all five of those races would be in the bank right now and the Senate majority would definitely be in the Republican sights.

But look, volatile election, Brian, and Democrats still think a lot can change in 18 days.

There has not been a poll in at least 8 or 12 weeks that has shown anything but Buck in Colorado and Paul in Kentucky.  I remember this idiot and Moaning Joe waxing poetic about what an "inspiration" Charlie Crist the "independent" was to Republicans!  Oh, my!  What a candidate!   Now Crist has landed like the Hindenburg and they won't even mention "Marco Rubio".

Question for Todd

Submitted by ThisnThat on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 9:07pm.

and this is a Graduate Level question: If a RINO wins, is it a victory for Republicans?

A clue to your answer -- go ask Charlie Crist, who is being supported by the Dims over the Dim candidate. Or any number of losing RINOs, who immediately endorsed their Dim opponent.

I'd rather lose than vote for a RINO. Never again!

if you can really ask yourself if a RINO is better than a Democrat, or how much one single vote matters, you might want to revisit the Scott Brown campaign and the one vote that stopped healthcare--albeit temporarily.

look: O'Donnell isn't going to lose because she's too conservative. she's going to lose because she's a dreadful candidate. I'm sorry to say that but it's true (altho her performance in the debate was quite surprisingly good. unfortunately she's "only" down 11 still...)

so yes, I would rather have had Castle than the Bearded Marxist Coons, who will soon BE the senator, because we allowed it to happen. I'd rather have someone who votes Republican some of the time than someone who thinks Obama is a moderate.

She was not "surprisingly" good as I have heard her interviewed a number of times.  She is good.  The MSM never cared to air her opinions as they much rather focus on witchcrap and anything but Coons record of voting to increase New Castle County property taxes 58% in less than 10 years and increase spending by more so now the county is broke.  He blames his predecessor for the mess, remind you of anyone?

because we allowed it to happen.

And just how did we allow that to happen?  Whether or not I support Chritine O'donnel of not doesn't matter in the election because I dont live in Delaware.  Now the people of Delaware apparently saw something they liked in here and will vote for.  No its not our fault, its the GOP and the fault of the canditate they supported.

Remember the only vote of teh people was for a PARTY canditate not for teh Senate.

So if the people cannot see Coons for a communist then they can vote for more hopey changy like they did in 2010.

She's not a dreadful candidate. Get out of here with this nonsense. She's down to this Coons clown thanks to the idiot GOP establishment smearing and lying about her the way they did. She was up by two on him back in July before this hit job started. Since you would rather have Castle (someone who supports cap and trade and doesn't want to repeal all of Obamacare), you are not a true conservative. Party should not matter over principle. That's why we're in the mess that we're in.

That self-serving, tortured

Submitted by fitzfong on Sat, 10/16/2010 - 1:42pm.

That self-serving, tortured "half a loaf" myth is the LAZIEST "argument" going.  You do not advance the conservative agenda by supporting gutless RINO hacks like Mike Castle who may vote with your party 80% of the time, but with their party the 20% of the time IT ACTUALLY MATTERS.  Any Republican who votes for Cap-and-Trade is unfit for office (and that goes for Mark Kirk, as well) and must not be rewarded.  RINOs vote with the Democrats on the most important issues (bailouts, judicial nominees, tax policy, energy policy...uh, CARD CHECK, ANYONE?) and then demand our tolerance and tribute because we "fail to see" their cowardice as "pragmatism".  At least a Marxist Democrat voting for the Reid/Pelosi/Obama agenda will do so without polluting the Republican brand.  If it takes the Republican Party losing seats and elections repeatedly until they learn that their job is to advance the conservative agenda, not to more slowly advance the Marxist agenda, that's just going to have to be the price paid.  The sooner the Republican Party learns that it's mission is not to appeal to the middle, but to convert them, the better.  For it's becoming apparent that there is not enough room in the Republican Party for conservatives and liberals-in-moderate-clothing.  One is going to have to go.

Todd is whistling past the graveyard

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Sat, 10/16/2010 - 1:21am.

The Republicans were ready to fold their tents 21 months ago and give Obama whatever he wanted.

The TEA Party dragged them kicking and screaming and led the way to opposing his disastrous agenda despite having no power whatsoever. Only the dubious and cowardly "Reconciliation" process allowed the Dems to pass ObamaCare and only by lying to the American people in face over overwhelming protests.

No, Mr. Todd. The Republicans would be in no position to gain anywhere near a majority in either House were it not for the steel in the spine of the American people and their love of Country and Constitution and Liberty.

There's an avalanche coming toward you and you want to obsess over a few icicles hanging from the roof.

I disagree with your analysis

Submitted by Galvanic on Sat, 10/16/2010 - 11:17am.

The GOP was never ready to give Obama everything he wanted.  They've rarely showed as much solidarity as they did objecting to the stimulus bill and health care reform.  Collins, Snowe, and Specter were exceptions, and Arlen jumped parties shortly thereafter.

What the Tea Parties have done is demonstrate to the conservatives in the GOP that there is a sizeable segment of the electorate that is angry and actively campaigning for change.

They've gotten involved in Republican primaries and affected the outcomes, and the GOP Old Guard has greeted them with a mix of enthusiasm and loathing.  Karl Rove is a perfect example; he was angry that Angle and O'Donnell became GOP Senate candidates (I don't hink he was high on Rand Paul either), because he thought they were weak candidates  in races he thought the Republicans should win hands down.

The GOP still doesn't know what to make of the Tea Parties, but they seem to recognize that they have little choice but to ride the wave.   They've got precious little time to figure them out prior to 2012 Presidential election, because they could well end up with Palin as their candidate whether they like it or not.

The MSM doesn't understand the Tea Parties either, because their political perspective is in lock-step with the Democratic Party.

Todd is partly right:  the GOP probably had better chances in Nevada and Delaware without the Tea Party influence.

But what he fails to grasp is that the energy of the Tea Parties is what is stirring millions of Americans to vote this November, and it appears that those voters will eject 35-55 Democratic incumbents and hand the House to the GOP.   Sans the Tea Parties, I think GOP gains are far less.

Sorry, Galvanic, but you must

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Sat, 10/16/2010 - 12:45pm.

Sorry, Galvanic, but you must have been hung over in January/February of 2009. ;-) The Republicans were all about cooperating/negotiating with the Obama administration until the TEA Party/Town hall phenomena exploded onto the national scene. I stand by my statements and you can check back on the first months after Obama took the Oath of office when the TEA Party movement was first ignored, then ridiculed, then arose as a powerful force. The Republican "opposition" was only in "degree" and not in "substance". The Stimulus, cap-in-trade, healthcare "reform" were all negotiable to the Republican leadership, and it was "we the people" who said, "Hell NO!" And we were right.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree

Submitted by Galvanic on Sat, 10/16/2010 - 7:36pm.

The House version of the stimulus bill was HR. 1, which passed on January 28, 2009 without a single GOP vote; 176 Republicans voted against it; 2 didn't cast votes.

The Senate bill S. 1 passed on February 11, 2009 with only 3 GOP votes;  Specter, Collins, and Snowe.

The combined bill was signed into law by Obama on February 17, 2009 as the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009.

All that occurred less than thirty days after Obama's Inauguration, and as the bill numbers indicate -- HR. 1 and S.1 -- they were the very first pieces of legislation that Obama tried to get through.

While there had been some localized Tea Party activity prior to the passing of the Act, it didn't burst into nationwide activity until Obama signed the law.

The town halls really got hot from that point on, fed by the protracted development and passage of the health care reform bill.

But the Republicans showed on the very first bill to go to Obama' s desk that they weren't going to play along.

Now, if we thoughtfully

Submitted by Free Stinker on Sat, 10/16/2010 - 2:05am.

Now, if we thoughtfully analyzed these races:

  • Kentucky - No way.  Strong GOP lead per Rasmussen
  • Colorado - No way.  Strong GOP lead per Rasmussen
  • Delaware - As of Fri Oct 15, Rasmussen shows O'Donnel only trailing by 10 points (it was 20).  Even with the RNSC not supporting her.   She's closing the gap.  Why do you think that both Obama and Biden were just there campaigning?
  • Nevada - A close race, but Reid cannot get over 50% which (per Dick Morris) is very bad for an incumbant
  • Alaska - Miller is't only one point ahead of the Democrat.  He's only one point ahead of Murkowski, and that only after she's been receiving major $$$ from unions.

Laughably pathetic.  Even with all the MSM attacks on the Tea Partiers, Conservatives, and the above candidates they best they can hope for is 2 of these 5 races going Democrat.

Maybe they should focus on why a Dem incumbant in Arkansas was done 38 points back in August . . .

The MSM and its DP masters truly fear the Tea Parties because they won't go away.

So, they resort to the usual Alinsky tactic:  paint them as extremists and dangerous.

In line with that and the fact that the Dems face a slaughter in November, the MSM-DP coalition has decided to define a "Democratic victory" as one in which they hold on to Senate seats in Nevada, Delware, and Kentucky.  They will then credit the Tea Parties for handing them 'victories,'  hoping the GOP will join them in dissing the Tea Partiers.

So we'd have five more RINOs in office if liberal Toddy had his way. No thanks. Will Todd eat his words if four or all five of his 'weak' Tea Party candidates win? Doubt it. This is just more democrap propaganda. Try to insinuate in the public mind that the republican candidates or the teaparty candidates are 'weak'. Well people don't like to vote for 'weak' candidates. So this is an effort to peel back undecideds to democraps. If we didn't have crazed power junkie RINOs in some of these races, the teapartiers would be far ahead of their rivals, giving the lie to Todd's propaganda.

After the election?

Submitted by okiehawk44 on Sat, 10/16/2010 - 10:23am.

Seriously what are the Chuck Todd types going to do after the elections? Their cable shows are not returning profits and only seem to survive on political commentary directed at this upcoming election. Their print media has sagging or collapsed sales so they can't go there. Their colleagues on blog sites like Salon.com are not going to allow but a tiny few of them to come in from the cold when they no longer have a livelihood. Are they going to pretend to themselves that they are still relevant by trying to write a book? Someone has to buy it Chuck et al and not many on the left sell many books -- ask Mika or Joe Scarborough who combined sold less than 20k which is miniscule in that business. I don't think local stations will want you either in this economy and the existing talent will surely not be welcoming because they are trying to stay employed themselves and see you as the enemy. It's really hard to imagine you doing anything better than what you're doing and that is not going to last until the next election cycle starts.
