Monday's CBS Evening News, unlike the ABC and NBC evening newscasts, found time for a story on protesters, against liberal Democratic health plans, who confronted members of Congress at forums over the weekend, though reporter Wyatt Andrews felt the need to insert “scare” quotes as he referred to “demonstrators against what they called 'government-run health care'” and “what they call 'Obama-care.'”

Anchor Katie Couric set up the story: “The debate over health care reform is not limited to the halls of Congress. Voices are being heard all over the country -- voices of protest. And they're growing louder.” Andrews showed how “angry protestors in Philadelphia shouted down both the HHS Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, and Senator Arlen Specter” before he asserted “the crowds are partly the result of conservative Web sites asking for turnout at town halls.” Andrews, however, acknowledged “the turnouts also reflect real fear over the increased taxes and government controls that are part of the health bills being considered in Congress.”

Andrews concluded with the Democrats' plight: “Avoiding this kind of uproar is partly why Democrats wanted to pass health reform before the August recess. Democrats are now out there without a final bill to defend, but facing opponents trying to kill what they call 'Obama-care' with a show of August heat.”

The story on the Monday, August 3 CBS Evening News:

KATIE COURIC: The debate over health care reform is not limited to the halls of Congress. Voices are being heard all over the country -- voices of protest. And they're growing louder. Here's Wyatt Andrews.

WYATT ANDREWS, OVER BRIEF CLIPS OF CROWDS SHOUTING OVER THE NAMED SPEAKERS: It's happening almost everywhere Democrats are trying to defend health care reform. Angry protestors in Philadelphia shouted down both the HHS Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, and Senator Arlen Specter. On Saturday in Texas, demonstrators against what they called “government-run health care” surrounded, and then followed, Democratic Congressman Lloyd Doggett out to his car. [crowd: “Just say no.”]

The crowds are partly the result of conservative Web sites [video of FreedomWorks home page] asking for turnout at town halls -- including three tonight in Virginia, Mississippi and South Carolina. Hundreds of events by both Democrats and Republicans are being targeted in every state. But the turnouts also reflect  real fear over the increased taxes [man shouting “stop spending our money!”] and government controls that are part of the health bills being considered in Congress.

MIKE PAPPAS, FREEDOM WORKS: They know that that means somebody's taxes are eventually be used to pay for this -- and they're worried that that's their taxes.

ANDREWS: Political analysts say Democrats face a very tough August because beyond the shout-downs, anti-reform forces have also mounted phone campaigns.

MARC AMBINDER, CBS NEWS POLITICAL ANALYSR: It's all the calls that are flooding in to the district offices of members of Congress and I bet that a lot of these calls will be negative.

ANDREWS: Avoiding this kind of uproar is partly why Democrats wanted to pass health reform before the August recess. Democrats are now out there without a final bill to defend, but facing opponents trying to kill what they call “Obama-care” with a show of August heat. Katie?

Yep

Bring your bill and meet us on the common. So far all we have found is Congressional clunkers need to be traded in. They know nothing and assume the people don't know that much.

Boy are they in for a rough ride.

I do so hope our congressman decides to hold a public

meeting soon - I will be there with bells on!

Might I add that it couldn't happen to a more deserving politician than Specter...if anyone should have been treated in this manner, HE is it!

And it seems like the folks in New York were heeding my message - We will be silent NO MORE!

This made my weekend!!

Specter an Sibelius got nailed big-time!

Specter about got booed off the stage when he said they had to make the (health-care) judgments FAST.

Ummm, didn't Sebelius

Listen to John Conyers of Detroit say “What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you
don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you
read the bill?”

No wonder people are storming the gates at these pressers.

<sound of duct tape ripping off roll>

what they called 'government-run health care'”

Is that anything like a procedure that opponents call partial-birth abortion?

With liberals, especially in the MOI, it's never about what they're trying to ram down our throats or the ideology of those trying to do the ramming.  It's always about the way opponents are "painting" things, or what they "call" them. Obama isn't a radical leftist; it's just that his opponents "paint" him as one.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck.....

Let's see...I'll cut it short...the government wants to pass a 1000-page law regulating health insurance and the entire health care industry.....but it's not going to be "government-run"???

These people have all stepped through the looking glass and are passing around the hookah.....

Or your own lying eyes?

"the government wants to pass a 1000-page law regulating health insurance and the entire health care industry.....but it's not going to be "government-run"???

You nailed it, mb

Now they're doing the "astroturf" thing: saying that these aren't real Americans angry, they're just hired protestors from the insurance companies and Republicans. Yeah. Far be it from liberal organizations like MoveOn.org or People for the American Way to encourage citizens to go out and protest, right?

And these protestors are just stirring up misinformation, just because Obama wants to create a government insurance company that works like Medicare ... you know, that entitlement that's going broke?

KCM - I find it very interesting that the liberals bring up

charges such as these - they do so ONLY because they know that is THEIR routine.

I don't think they can understand people such as my husband and myself - two law-abiding ordinary senior citizens who had NEVER gone to a demonstration until the April Tea Party...we are simply sick and tired of watching these people in charge of our country DESTROY it rather than PROTECT it!

The left might as well get used to it because I do believe 'Pandora's Box' has been opened...or to put it another way, the genie has been let out of the bottle and there is no way to put it back.  Hear us ROAR, folks!!!  The Silent Majority is Silent no more!

I hope every single member of Congress who intends to vote for this healthcare bill, a bill they haven't even read and a bill that is so far offbase that there is NO way it can be good for our country, well I hope they get similar receptions to what we've witnessed so far.

Agreed, CC

I happened to catch a segment on CNN's Campbell Brown last night about the angry protest in Philadelphia. The "Demoratic strategist" immediately called it a fake, because some websites had encouraged people to go to the events and protest.

  • The Orioles have a website that encourages fans to attend. I occasionally attend Orioles games. Does that prove that I went because the Orioles suggested it?
  • So because they could find a website that encouraged protest, this Democrat immediately portrayed it as a conspiracy?

How does the website's encouragement count as proof of a conspiracy to hoodwink democracy? Unless you can show that the angry citizens read the site, and wouldn't have gone otherwise, then the Democrat's charge is more phony than what he's accusing others of doing.

Campbell Brown offered no rebuttal to this guy. Of course (they think) it's a conspiracy. Why else would anyone object to Obama?

these cowards...

What to do about Mr. Scum, your mis-representative.

Here is a suggestion for what to do about Mr. Scum, your mis-representative.

Get an actor – hire one if necessary – to role play for cowardly Mr. Scum, then advertise your town meeting, and have a [tea] party at various parts of Mr. Scum’s district.  Video tape it and put it on YouTube.  Just remember: DO NOT TAR AND FEATHER your actor.  Make sure everyone knows fake representative from the mis-representative.

Saw it via drudge

It was a thing of beauty. Sebelius was especially bitchy when she said "I've never been in congress", as if that makes her less culpable. Take em' all to the woodshed!

jdly..yes Sebelius acted

jdly..yes Sebelius acted particularly snotty at that meeting. Like all these other big shot living-off-the-taxpaper government parasites, she has rings of toadies around her always telling her all day long how smart she is, bringing her coffee, opening doors for her, saying to her, "What a great idea you have!"

Then she gets to meet real people and panics. Goes right into I- know-more-than-you mode.

One thing was clear to me: She ain't read the Obama Health Care Rationing bill, either.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Got that right

Sebelius and all the others haven't read the bill.  They don't have to.  They know that they can take it ON FAITH that it was written by fellow socialist Dems and will cover all their talking points.

Were they NOT counting on conservatives actually READING the bill and having a few questions?

Hubris and arrogance describes the Democrat party.

The old

The old too-many-pages-to-read trick is not working for these lazy bureaucrats this time, and they know it. That's why they are running scared and hiding under the bed, But we are going to drag them out and MAKE them read it.

The bill smells and looks like snake oil, because that's what it is.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Heck cel... I totally

Heck cel...

I totally agree where you are going with this, but if anyome thinks for one minute these arrogant congress-critters are really ever going to read the bill themselves...well heck, I've got beach front property for sale in the high desert...

They will have their aides or whoever read whatever they think they need, gt their talking points from Rahm, and the rest of the crew behind the scenes, the SRM will attempt to carry their baggage for them...and I fear eventually they will get this through, whatever form it is in, come hell or high water.

Too many RINOs that will bend in my opinion, while the majority of the so-called blue dogs will be bought off.

Hope I am wrong, just talking fast off the top of my head in between things...so take it as a rant.   ;-)

Sebelius

Sebelius is a disguisting woman. Not as bad as Claire McCaskell, but much in the same mold. Lying and relying on your gender to get you where you are...sums it up. Now I know that Cokie says since I am a  man that I am not very smart, but...if this is the women's best choices and smartest they have to show me up, well....not buying into it.

In the bill, the Secretary

In the bill, the Secretary of HHS is supposed to "develop standards for the measurement of gender..."(pp 410 - 414)  When asked about this provision, Secretary Kathleen Sibelius stated that she was not familiar with that part of the legislation.

My question: how do you "measure gender"?  44DD? 6"?

And then there are the videos of Teh One flat out stating that this is but the first step to a single payer health care system,  In March of  2007, before the SEIU, Barak stated, "... I don't think we're going to be able to eliminate employer coverage immediately..."

And, before the AFL-CIO in 2003, the Mulatto Marxist said, "I happen to be a proponent of a single payer universal healthcare plan ... that's what I would like to see."

Barney (there is no problem with FannyMae and FreddyMac) Frank said on July 27 of this year, that "If we get a good public option, it could lead to single payer, and that's the best way to reach single payer."

So, all the commucrats out there who are saying the right is maligning the administration, that they don't want to take over healthcare in this country, that they aren't trying to nationalize healthcare, I say relieve yourselves of your rectal-cranial inversion, because by the words of your false god Obama, and his disciples, that is exactly what they are trying to do.

"A communist is someone who reads Marx.  An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx."  Ronald Reagan

oh come on

What exactly is an anti-reform force? Is that like the war protestors from 2003? What about la Raza protestors? Are they an anti-civil obedience force? What about Cindy Sheehan screaming at Bush on the outskirts of Camp David...an anti-progress-in-Iraq force?

I just love how it boils down to TEA partiers being against "reform."

But hey, at least CBS actually ran a story on it. They tried,

How dare we question our

How dare we question our elected representatives? Don't we know that we elected them to do whatever they think is best for us? Damn those meddling conservative websites and radio hosts. Who do they think they are - stirring up the people? How can our elected officials run the country if the wretched, opiniated public is constantly bothering them with trivial whining?

We should really just drink the koolaid and shut up. Right?

Well as Annnn-drea Mitchell

Well as Annnn-drea Mitchell said the other day (I think it was her...can't check...site problems), sometimes the people don't know what's good for them.

You should get down on your knees and thank God (or your lucky stars if you don't believe in God...) that we are blessed with such erudite and compassionate representatives who DO know what we need, and will see to it that we get it.

Some day you will appreciate all they've done for you.

Yeah, there was a bunch

Yeah, there was a bunch that went from Philly to NYC to Chicago in their SuperSonic Bus.....you could tell, because the same people were at all of them....

Yeah, right.

They never miss a beat.

"ANDREWS: Political analysts say Democrats face a very tough August because beyond the shout-downs, anti-reform forces have also mounted phone campaigns."

Liberals never miss a beat.  They always come up with a smear label to marginalize those who don't agree with them.  Bigots, racists, sexists, homophobes, xenophobes. Haters, hatemongers, gun-nuts, religious-nuts, "conspiracy-theorists," extremists.

All the way back to "male chauvinist pigs," and then up to recently, "birthers," and now, "anti-reform forces."

Well, okay...guess I'll contribute to their assumptions

of phone campaigns once again.

Heh

Heh, did I ever nail that one.  I just read libs calling anyone who doesn't support Obama-care, "anti-health care forces."

These demonstrators are no

These demonstrators are no where near angry enough.  These knuckleheads in the government won't get the message until they're confronted with the angry mobs of the Hanoi Jane days.

That's all they understand.

However, the Abbie Hoffmans had friends and sympathizers in high places (Hollywood, the press, the government, academia...) and we do not.  Actually, if conservatives do take to the streets (to protest vigorously but legally that is...with permits...and not getting too loud or rowdy...no alcohol of course...and total and complete respect for law, order and authority...just being plain nice...really) that would be the trigger they need to crush us.  That's what they are waiting for...that's why they keep pushing us.

Make no mistake-even a lot of these so called conservatives in government and in the press are not our friends.  They will go up to a certain line and will not cross it as they have too much to lose.  They will always look out for themselves first and foremost.  They know how to play the game.

The Bill O'Reillys, the Ann Coulters, the Sean Hannitys and the rest of them are talented media people.  They can take any position and defend it quite well.  That's the stock and trade of any good radio talk show host if you've ever paid attention.

Where's the passion for our Liberty, for our Republic?  Where's the sense of urgency?  Where's the understanding that these people in power aren't playing around with us?

Perhaps the talking heads and the blog pundits are in denial or just plain scared.

The only one that comes even close to saying what needs to be said (for now anyways) is Glenn Beck.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

And what about Mike?

Michael Savage has plenty to say but is scorned by the other so called conservative talkers. Maybe you should listen in sometime.

All Mike All the Time

I listened to 2 hours of Mark Levin and thought I'd listen to the start of Savage's show because I wanted him to scream about these town-halls and these socialists.  I've been an off/on fan since before the first book.  Unfortunately for Mike, I got bored hearing about his New Yorker interview from the get-go AGAIN because he talked about it over and over last week, and I went back to the 3rd and final hour of Levin.

It is government run health care. Obama and slobberin'

...Bawney have both gone on record as saying so.

DO THESE LYING SCM PROPAGANDIST SCUM PAY ANY ATTENTION AT ALL TO THE PEOPLE THEY LIE FOR???

Avoiding this kind of

Avoiding this kind of uproar is partly why Democrats wanted to pass health reform before the August recess.

YES, HOW DARE THESE PEOPLE PROTEST?!?!? ALL WE WANT TO DO IS PASS A BILL QUICKLY BEFORE IT GETS READ!!!

MEMO from the WHITE HOUSE to MSM:

As per Saul Alensky "Rules for Radicals": demonize and mock healthcare policy opponents, call dissenters paid hacks, label them as being anti-reform, call opponents as "evil" and or stupid and question their patriotism.  Heck they see how effective it was against Bush. See how quickly the media follows Obama's script.

Off topic but maybe posting this will help me unwind.

We can start RIGHT NOW - let's keep the heat on Congress and never let up until 2010 elections!

Goodnight all ;-)

MOST OF THIS HAS ALREADY HAPPENED. What would you say if I gave you 11 reasons why the elections in 2010 will be the most important in the ENTIRE history of the United States?

1.     What if I had told you in October 2008, before the last presidential election, that before Barack Obama's first 100 days in office, the federal government would be in control of both the mortgage and the banking industries? That 19 of America's largest banks would be forced to undergo stress tests by the federal government which would determine if they were insufficiently capitalized, so they must be supervised by the government? Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

2.     What if I had told you that within Barack Obama's first 100 days in office the federal government would be the largest shareholder in the US Big-Three automakers: Ford, GM, and Chrysler? That the government would kick out the CEO's of these companies and appoint hand-picked executives with zero experience in the auto industry and that executive compensation would be determined, not by a Board of Directors, but by the government? Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

3.     What if I had told you that Barack Obama would appoint 21 Czars, without Congressional approval, accountable only to him, not to the voters, who would have control over a wide range of US policy decisions.  That there would be a Stimulus Accountability Czar, an Urban Czar, a Compensation Czar, an Iran Czar, an Auto Industry Czar, a Cyber Security Czar, an Energy Czar, a Bank Bailout Czar, and more than a dozen other government bureaucrats with unchecked regulatory powers over US domestic and foreign policy. Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

4.     What if I had told you that the federal deficit would be $915 billion in the first six months of the Obama presidency - with a projected annual deficit of $1.75 trillion - triple the $454.8 billion in 2008, for which the previous administration was highly criticized by Obama and his fellow Democrats. That Congress would pass Obama's $3.53 trillion federal budget for fiscal 2010. That the projected deficit over the next ten years would be greater than $10 trillion.                                     Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

5.     What if I had told you that the Obama Justice Department would order FBI agents to read Miranda rights to high-value detainees captured on the battlefield and held at US military detention facilities in Afghanistan. That Obama would order the closing of the Guantanamo detention facility with no plan for the disposition of the 200-plus individuals held there. That several of the suspected terrorists at Guantanamo would be sent to live in freedom in Bermuda at the expense of the US government. That our returning US veterans would be labeled terrorists and put on a watch list. Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

6.     What if I had told you that the federal government would seek powers to seize key companies whose failures could jeopardize the financial system. That a new regulatory agency would be proposed by Obama to control loans, ***********s, mortgage-backed securities, and other financial products offered to the public. Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

7.     What if I had told you that Obama would travel to the Middle East, bow before the Saudi king, and repeatedly apologize for America's past actions. That he would travel to Latin America where he would warmly greet Venezuela's strongman Hugo Chavez and sit passively in the audience while Nicaraguan Marxist thug Daniel Ortega charged America with terrorist aggression in Central America.  Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

8.     Okay, now what if I were to tell you that Obama wants to dismantle conservative talk radio through the imposition of a new "Fairness Doctrine."  That he wants to curtail the First Amendment rights of those who may disagree with his policies via internet blogs, cable news networks, or advocacy ads. That most major network television and most newspapers will only sing his phrases like state-run media in communist countries? Would you say, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

9.     What if I were to tell you that the Obama Justice Department is doing everything it can to limit your Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms. That the federal government wants to reinstate the so-called assault weapons ban which would prohibit the sale of any type of firearm that requires the shooter to pull the trigger every time a round is fired. That Obama's Attorney General wants to eliminate the sale of virtually all handguns and ammunition, which most citizens choose for self-defense. Would you say, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

10.What if I were to tell you that the Obama plan is to eliminate states rights guaranteed by the Tenth Amendment and give the federal government sweeping new powers over policies currently under the province of local and state governments and voted on by the people.  That Obama plans to control the schools, energy production, the environment, healthcare, and the wealth of every US citizen.  Would you say, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."

11.What if I were to tell you that the president, the courts, and the federal government have ignored the US Constitution and have seized powers which the founders of our country fought to restrict.  That our last presidential election may have been our last truly free election for some time to come. That our next presidential election may look similar to the one recently held in Iran. (And may be under the review of A.C.O.R.N.) I know, I know what you will say. That will never happen in America!

If we don't do everything in our power to stop this madness in 2010, may God have mercy on our souls. Please pass this on to every freedom-loving American you know. Thank you.

If Dems believe the astroturf stories they should act like it

If the Democrat law makers really believe the astroturf stories they should have the police remove these people.  And they should deliver a scolding lecture to them as the police drag them out.

Whoaa - CBS is reporting news?

It's about time CBS noticed not everyone is on board for Obama's Rationed Healthcare.

Maybe Katie's small audience thought that just maybe there's something to the protests and it will affect them, too.

First of all, the people aren't out there because Freedom Works told us to. We are out there because the federal govt. is trying to push these bill down our throats. We know  the govt. was trying to pass it before recess. They figured we wouldn't be able to anything about it. They figured wrong. The people wanted answers & they get the run around. Now we want these idiots out of office. Why should we let a bunch of people that think they are royalty pass any bill if they can't even stay on a budget? They got us into this mess and we will get us out. Say goodby to these buffoons and put someone with a brain in office.                      Patriot & Proud!

Relabeling

The liberals are running as fast as they can from the label 'Government Health Care'; they must have polled it and found how bad it is being taken. They are desperately trying to reposition their takeover as 'public health insurance plan' (v. private insurance), or 'Co-op' plan. They are also going to advance their government plan as increasing competition in the healthcare insurance market, when in fact is is intended to eliminate private insurance.

Watch for these new labels.
