Nets, But Not CNN, Bury Sotomayor's Admission of 'Wise Latina' v 'Wise Caucasian' Disparity

CNN's Wolf Blitzer late Tuesday afternoon characterized it as “an incredibly important exchange” and a “very, very dramatic moment” when Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor “concurred” with Senator Lindsey Graham that he would have paid a heavy price if he had ever maintained “a wise white man would make better decisions than a Latina,” yet neither ABC nor NBC mentioned in their evening newscasts Sotomayor's acknowledgment about the impact of her assertion “a wise Latina woman” would “reach a better conclusion than a white male” if reversed.

ABC's Jan Crawford Greenburg, who described the hearing as “grueling,” NBC's Pete Williams and CBS's Wyatt Andrews all highlighted Sotomayor's defense of her “wise Latina” reasoning, but none cited the exchange with Graham. CBS's Jeff Greenfield, however, noted Graham's point, if not Sotomayor's acceptance of it: “We saw Lindsey Graham of South Carolina -- very pointedly and conversationally -- saying to her, 'you know, if I'd said such things about the superiority of a Caucasian male I'd have had my head handed to me.'”

Shortly before 5 PM EDT, Blitzer segued to an ad break during live coverage of the confirmation hearing:

That was certainly one of the highlights, if not the highlight, so far, the questioning of Sonia Sotomayor by the Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, especially that very, very dramatic moment when she concurred that, if he would have said something along the lines if he, as a white man, as a Caucasian, felt that a wise white man would make better decisions than a Latina, for example, he would have been over with. His career would have ended. He confronted her with that. And she concurred, basically. It was a very, very dramatic moment.

A few minutes later, Blitzer re-played part of the exchange:

There was an incredibly important exchange that just occurred between Lindsey Graham, the Republican Senator from South Carolina, a key member of this panel, and Sonia Sotomayor. I'm going to play this clip, and then we will discuss.
GRAHAM: Do you understand, ma'am, that, if I had said anything like that, and my reasoning was that I'm trying to inspire somebody, they would have had my head? Do you understand that?

SOTOMAYOR: I do understand how those words could be taken that way, particularly if read in isolation.

GRAHAM: Well, I don't know how else you could take that. If Lindsey Graham said that "I will make a better senator than X because of my experience as a Caucasian male, makes me better able to represent the people of South Carolina," and my opponent was a minority, it would make national news. And it should.

Greenfield's assessment, on the July 14 CBS Evening News, of what the Judiciary Committee's Republicans achieved:

Well I think the conservatives on the panel have made the case to their base and to their supporters that this is someone who brings identity politics into the law where it doesn't belong. That she puts her gender, her ethnicity front and center. We've heard that in the speeches. We saw Lindsey Graham of South Carolina -- very pointedly and conversationally -- saying to her "you know, if I'd said such things about the superiority of a Caucasian male I'd have had my head handed to me." So they laid out the reasons why conservatives would not be happy with a Sotomayor confirmation.

What a snore

I am watching some of this...wake me when it's over. Yah, yah, the Republicans should be ashamed of doing their job questioning her exalted self, she is wonderful for getting out of poverty (which is admirable, wish I could), she is the crabby teacher some of us had, she is arrogant, she is empathetic...whatever. She will be confirmed, so what--we should still do this.

The Dems and the MSM are all

The Dems and the MSM are all doing the wink and nod game. Holding their collective breath until they can get her on the court. She flat out lied yesterday. BO picks 'em in his own likeness.

When it's all said and done:

Senator of either party: "Judge Soapinmyear, at the end of the day, when the dust has settled, and since we live in a society where racist comments are not tolerated, and, given that you have repeatedly made racist comments, you will be confirmed anyway because of your race."

Judge Soapinmyear: "It took you long enough, you evil gringo devil!"

Senator of either party: "We look forward to your wise service."

They can say anything they

They can say anything they want at this point b/c it doesn't matter...she's in. Understand that the MSM knows how to report objectively, they just don't like doing it when it runs counter to their personal political views.

Sonia is not a particularly

Sonia is not a particularly wise woman.  Latina or other-wise (bad pun)

OK, I'm irritated.  Whenever she is speaking, she goes along with her Bronx inflections (I'm from Queens, so yes that's authentic, I'll give her that) and then when she comes across a word, like "Latina," and its as though a switch is flipped.  The volume of her voice goes up a few decibles, she adopts a THICK hispanic accent for a fraction of a second, and then the switch goes off, and she finishes the rest of the sentence in her normal speaking voice.

I just find it obnoxious.  As Chris Parnell said in the Cowbell Skit, "if I'm the only one, I'll shut up."

Like finger nails down a

Like finger nails down a chalkboard.

Reminds me of the pretentious folks who say "Pari" with a fake French accent instead of Paris because they think it makes them sound worldly.

I'd love to hear her pronounce taco or enchilada or some other some other common Spanish word you hear in English just to see if she does the same phony baloney. How about every time she says the word America, someone corrects her - it's pronounced Amer REE Ka.

The fact that she does this tells me she's been drinking the kool-aid that makes you hyper-PC. I hear a lot of lefties who do this and they all tend to share the same ideological bent. I wonder if she sometimes writes women as womyn.

I'm surprised that MSNBC

I'm surprised that MSNBC didn't break in last night with the report that, "GOP Outrageous Statement! Senator Lindsay Graham Asserts That White Men Are Better Decision Makers Than Latinas". Come on, you know Olbermann would try to make it work...

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Sotomayor

Lindsay Graham is right -- it's a perfect case of a double standard.  And of course, the media is totally complicit in perpetuating it.

But only the dominant race

But only the dominant race can be racist because only they have the power to systematically impose their racism. You see it is not a double standard at all. :-)

I had someone tell me this with a straight face once. Very Orwellian but the fact of the matter is that most on the left have been indoctrinated to believe this. Question it and you are a racist, a redneck or stupid. This tripe has replaced logic in most colleges.
