Matthews Panel: Romney 'Better Off' If Seen as 'Pragmatic, Deal-Making Moderate'

By Brad Wilmouth | June 24, 2012 | 13:00

A  A

During the concluding "Big Question" segment of this weekend's syndicated Chris Matthews Show, the entire panel voiced their belief that Mitt Romney is "better off" if he is perceived by voters to be a "pragmatic, deal-making moderate" rather than a "true blue conservative."

Matthews posed the question:

This week's big question: Is Mitt Romney better off if voters see him as a true blue conservative or as a pragmatic, deal-making moderate? Howard?

The panel members responded unanimously:

HOWARD FINEMAN, HUFFINGTON POST: Moderate.

LIZ MARLANTES, CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR: Moderate.

KELLY O'DONNELL, NBC NEWS: Pragmatist, for sure.

DAVE MARANISS, WASHINGTON POST: Foursome, I agree.

Matthews added: "It's so great. We're all agreeing he's better off not looking like he's pretending to be."

Yes, Romney needs to be a pragmatic, deal-making moderate like Obama has been for the past three years.

Gosh....that Romney fellow would sure be great if only he was more like a Democrat.
If only he would distance himself from his own supporters and embrace the people who would love to see him go down in flames.
Wouldn't it be great if his campaign endorsed Obama too...?

Prissy's panel just might get their wish

Submitted by Dave. on Sun, 06/24/2012 - 2:06pm.

Mittens needs to stop pandering and start going after Obama the exact same ruthless way Reagan went after Jihad Jimmy.

He needs to be relentlessly ripping Obama a new one each and every time he gets in front of a microphone.

If he doesn't, he is going to be toast come November, and so will America.

Do not kid yourself.

This is not the same America that threw Jihad Jimmy out on his ass in 1980.

Obama still has a lot of support in this country - on both sides of the grass.

Great point Dave. Mitt's speech the other day pandering to Latinos was egregious, to say the least.

I'm seriously losing hope about the November election. With everything Obama has done it amazes me that he still polls so well.

Just today the local newspaper published a statewide (Virginia) poll conducted by it and a local university. The sample was small, just 776 people, and the ones polled were "registered voters and people expecting to register." The results showed that if the election were held today Obama would win 49% to 42%. On top of that 20% "strongly approve" and 31% "approve" of the job Obama is doing.

The margin of error was 3.5%.

With those kinds of results I'm more disheartened than ever.

Give Obama credit, there is a thriving segment of the US economy

Submitted by lsudolemite on Sun, 06/24/2012 - 7:38pm.

The business of government is booming bigger than ever. And DC area libs are by far the biggest beneficiaries, so of course they're going to vote for the guy promising to keep that gravy train rolling.

And honestly, considering he's an incumbent with the presstitutes turning a record number of tricks to keep him in office, it's amazing that he has approval as low as the mid-40s.

Aw, bless his heart. Here's yet another frothing, rabid liberal - who wants Obama to win at any cost - giving his hated enemies in the GOP his heartfelt, sincere, and noble advice on how to beat Obama, the man who gives Matthews thrills in his pants.

Any conservative who takes their 'advice' deserves what they get. Just like McCain got. He trusted their 'advice' too - and look what that got him.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Off Topic - Yet Salient

Submitted by HardRightTurn on Sun, 06/24/2012 - 2:28pm.

I predict right here and now that Obama is going to issue an edict via Executive Order that the Supreme Court decision to strike down Obamacare is unconstitutional. He will order HHS to implement Obamacare in full.

Time to draw up articles of impeachment.

The GOP will impeach Obama sometime between hell freezing over

and the Big Crunch. If you think these people are perpetually haunted by the ghost of Goldwater's defeat, think about the sheer bowels-emptying dread it would induce if you suggest impeachment after (a) Clinton's went oh-so-well and (b) the optics of the GOP impeaching the first black president. Obama would have to personally murder someone in front of the WH press corpse before that happened.

The same holds true for any of you people who seriously believe either he or Holder will ever be arrested for anything arising out of F&F.

Sorry to Disappoint

They so badly wanted Romney to be McCain.

There seems to be a direct relationship between Romney sticking to "true blue" conservatism and the growing uncomfortableness of the left. It is ironic that the left (and Republican "center") got the candidate the wanted to face Obama, Romney. It is good to see them shooting themselves in the foot - it's gotta hurt. Who thought Romney would prove be this conservative? I didn't, but I am happy he has. Here's hoping he hangs in there.
