NBC's Mitchell: Bloomberg Donation to Planned Parenthood Helped Him 'Connect to People' In His Constituency

By Brad Wilmouth | February 06, 2012 | 09:44

A  A

On Sunday's Chris Matthews Show, after panel member Richard Stengel of Time magazine argued that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is an example of a wealthy President who connected with average Americans more effectively than GOP presidential candidate Mitt Rommney does, NBC Andrea Mitchell praised New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for donating $250,000 to Planned Parenthood, arguing that it helped him "connect to people" in his "constituency." After an anecdote from Stengel about Roosevelt, Mitchell injected:

But, you know, there's a more recent example. Mike Bloomberg, who often doesn't have the average person's appeal,  within instance of that Susan G. Komen controversy this week, he forked over $250,000 on Twitter-

Host Chris Matthews added, "Which was just the right amount for a billionaire."

Mitchell continued:

It was perfect. And it showed that - and it's not just that he rides the subway, but it showed that he does know how to use personal  wealth to connect to people on an issue that was important to his consituency.

And yet...

Submitted by c5then on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 9:56am.

No mention that Mitt Romney donated 15% of his income last year to charity.

So apparently it's only when they agree with the recipient that this becomes "good news".

It also shows that if all the rich liberals, including Mitchell and Matthews, step up and put their money where their mouth is, Planned Parenthood does not need any government money. When PP gets cut off from federal funds after the next president is inaugurated next year, they should do fine unless their liberal supporters decide to be stingey with their fabulous wealth. Which of course is highly likely.

You're right; they don't like where Romney donates.

Romney actually gets slapped by liberals because he tithes to the Mormon Church which is homophobic and discriminatory, dontcha know!

I suspect....

...a quarter of a million dollar donation vs. a $10,000 bet shows a bit more of a disconnect.

How it should read

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 10:35am.

It should read like this:

Bloomberg donation to PP helped him to "CON" people in his constituency

There ya go.

Money?

Submitted by HudsonRiverGirl on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 11:15am.

So Bloomer's money enabled him to connect but Romney's money means he can't connect?

Not that we expect logic or intellectual honesty from anyone on the left.

Yet it would be

a whole different story if Bloomberg gave his $250K to a pro life organization. Then he'd be using his ill gotten wealth to deny women reproductive rights.

If you're not getting flak, you're not over the target.

Unbelievable

Submitted by HockeyKid on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 12:33pm.

FDR actually had special elevators and underground garages constructed in NYC so he could drive in and out without being seen, and the media thinks he's an example of connecting to the public?

No, it's more like FDR promised to give something to everyone--the Damnocrats' very definition of "connecting".

Whoa there Trigger?

Was Bloomie's offer for real? Is he still going to match funds? He should give his "fair share" now we know he has it to give.
Let's see if he follows up.....it is only right he give as any Lib would, and yes he is a LIB.
