CBS’s Cordes to Boehner: ‘How Can You Even Allow These Soldiers to Wonder Whether They're Going to Get Paid?’

By Brad Wilmouth | August 01, 2011 | 01:19

A  A

On Saturday’s CBS Evening News, correspondent Nancy Cordes seemed to put the burden on Republicans of causing U.S. troops to wonder if they will be paid on time during the budget battle, as a clip of her was shown asked House Speaker John Boehner, "How can you even allow these soldiers to wonder whether they're going to get paid?"

Cordes got to the subject after showing a clip of an unidentified male member of the House of Representatives declaring, "This process has become a joke. It is a disgrace. It's an insult to the American people." The CBS correspondent then added, "And to the troops." After relaying that some troops had raised concerns with Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen, Cordes showed the clip of herself with Speaker Boehner.

The CBS correspondent did not show a clip of any Democrats being asked a similar question.

Below is a transcript of the report from the Saturday, July 30, CBS Evening News, with critical portions in bold:

RUSS MITCHELL: And good evening. With less than 72 hours to go before the federal government potentially runs out of money to pay its bills, there is now word that talks to cut a deal have gone to a new level, this after the Senate late last night shot down a Republican proposal from the House, and the House today said no to a Democratic plan from the Senate. Congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes is on Capitol Hill with the very latest. Nancy, good evening.

NANCY CORDES: Good evening to you, Russ. And things have taken a strange turn here this evening. Republican leaders insist that an agreement is close at hand, but Democrats say that's a ruse. What we do know for certain is that Republican leaders have resumed talks in some form with the White House.

MITCH MCCONNELL, SENATE MINORITY LEADER: We are now fully engaged, the Speaker and I, with the one person in America out of 307 million people who can sign a bill into law. I'm confident and optimistic that we're going to get an agreement in the very near future and resolve this crisis in the best interests of the American people.

CORDES: But Democratic Senate Leader Harry Reid disputed that a short while later.

HARRY REID, SENATE MAJORITY LEADER: Not true. I just spent two hours with the President and Vice President and Leader Pelosi, and it's fair for me to say that the engagement there is not in any meaningful way.

CORDES: The two sides have been locked in a seemingly endless cycle of voting down whatever plan the other party puts forward.

STENY HOYER, HOUSE MINORITY WHIP: The people aren't looking to us for what we can stop. They're looking to us for what we can do.

CORDES: The partisan sniping continued today.

REP. DAVID DREIER (R-CA): The action that we're about to take here today is going to help with the process of seeing senator McConnell and Senator Reid work together. Why? Because-

REP. SANDER LEVIN (D-MI): I'm going to take back my time, Mr. Dreier. That is pernicious nonsense!

CORDES: Baron's newspaper dubbed it a "stupid fight."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES: This process has become a joke. It is a disgrace. It's an insult to the American people.

CORDES: And to the troops, some of whom asked the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, as he traveled through Afghanistan, whether they will still get paid if the U.S. coffers run dry. He told them, "I honestly can't answer that." How can you even allow these soldiers to wonder whether they're going to get paid?

JOHN BOEHNER, HOUSE SPEAKER: I think Senator McConnell and I are both confident that we're going to be able to come to some agreement with the White House and end this impasse.

CORDES: But, again, Democratic leaders dispute that, and, in fact, when House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was returning from the White House this evening, we asked her what she thought of McConnell's assertion that they were close to a deal, and she said to us, "I don't even know what you're talking about. " Russ?

That's Weird

Submitted by HardRightTurn on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 2:33am.

I thought Obama was commander in chief. No one in congress has a say in who gets paid during a government shutdown. Not yet anyway. We're about to see legislation that prioritizes spending during cutbacks.

In fact, we are going to see a lot of changes in how to limit progressives from doing things that harm the country and the economy. A balanced budget amendment is just a matter of time, for one thing. The legislature is going to be required to vote on it for every bill having anything remotely to do with finances. This is just the beginning of the end of progressive socialism, not only in America, but the world.

It's always Republicans' fault.

Submitted by motherbelt on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 7:06am.

If Republicans refuse to budge, they're "intransigent" and it's their fault.

If Democrats refuse to budge, it's "principle" and it's the Republicans' fault for not giving them what they want.

Example:  Clinton refused to sign the budget  and the government shutdown was Republicans' fault.

Same as it ever was..... -Talking Heads

o'bama will cut the military

Submitted by ThisnThat on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 7:55am.

...to preserve important things like scholarships for students.

This morning. CNBC. Gene Sperling, o'bama's economic council director.

He also insisted -- today -- that o'bama "inherited" a fiscal mess. The Speaker doesn't want an additional penny of new revenue while o'bama is calling for balance.  And we should stop asking mothers to sacrifice -- thereby justifying the need for a tax increase. Uh, I mean "revenue from those most well off".

Kinda sums up democrat position, doesn't it? Blame Bush, Income re-distribution, bash Republicans, and Class warfare, all in a span of 5 minutes.

Funny that Speaker Boehner

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 8:02am.

Funny that Speaker Boehner didn't send Gen. Mullen to Iraq to scare the hell out of soldiers telling them that they won't get paid after 8/2 if a deal wasn't done. He went out on Obama's orders not on the Tea Party's or Republican's orders. There is enough money to pay the debt service, Social Security, Medicare and military salaries, even without a deal, so the only issue would be, what are Obama's priorities. And that is the one thing that made me want a deal to fall through. For it would be crystallizing for the 2012 campaign for Obama to have to actually put on the line what HIS actual priorities are when he has to spend what the gov't takes in.

Aninal House redux

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 8:56am.

An effective debating tool -- some would call it a trick -- is to flip the argument and turn it against the opponent.

A wonderful dramatization of this is in the scene in the film Animal House wherein the Delta House appears before the Panhellenic Council to answer to charges of violations.  When it becomes obvious that the kangaroo court is going to nail them regardless, Otter speaks for the Deltas and delivers a diatribe in which he flips the issue from charges against the Deltas to a Council indictment of no less than the United States of America.

This has been the tactic of the DNC and Democratic White Houses for a long time, and it is echoed by the willful MSM, as evidenced by Cordes interview.

CORDES: How can you even allow these soldiers to wonder whether they're going to get paid?

Now, even socialist Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) conceded that there was enough money to pay Social Security, Medicare, and military pay regardless, and no Republican has even hinted that soldiers wouldn't get paid.

But the Dems have been throwing this canard around for so long that it's become second nature to the MSM.   It also contradicts Democratic calls for cuts to the defense budget, which might not keep soldiers from getting paid, but could impact the availability of the tools and support they need to prosecute the wars.

And if it's not soldiers, it's ailing elderly folks, starving children, homeowners with underwater mortgages, and students who need loans.

Knowing that the public is growing wary of unchecked spending and borrowing, they couch their position as knights defending the vulnerable and needy.

Submitted by no tingly legs on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 9:33am.

social security checks, medicare, veteran's disability and soldier's salaries for cuts whenever there's a budget crisis. Never talk about cutting aid to Pakistan, furloughing Federal bureaucrats, stopping payments to the U.N. or the like. The MSM naturally never asks why the latter can't be cut first.

They also never ask why the Ft Hood murderer, Major Nidal Hasan has been getting his $6,000 per month salary EVERY month since he killed those 13 American soldiers in cold blood almost two years ago. I guess that Federal payment is more important than paying a veteran's disability each month for getting his arms and/or legs blown off in battle.

This is standard Liberal Operating Procedure...

Submitted by Red Jeep on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 9:58am.

...go to the taxpayer and say we must cut what is dear/essential or we will have to raise taxes!

So when schools want more tax money it is "... either we get more tax money or teachers must be laid off..." (Like they can't cut anywhere else.)

When city government wants more tax money it is "... either we get more tax money or police must be laid off..." etc.

There are a lot of Departments of This and That in the Federal Government that should be closed like Energy, Education the EPA etc.

Stupidity on Steroids

What a brainless talking-point-parroting twit!!!

One might ask Her Royal Uppityness how she personally can let Ozoneman continually, even daily, make so many bald-faces lies and never even once dare to challenge the purported perfume of his oral flatulence. What is she personally doing to help solve the country's problems? Hmmm???

She's a stellar example of what comes from inhaling too many unicorn farts and munching out on all that pixie dust. It has destroyed half her brain, leaving the remaining synapse to die of loneliness.

Wussy reply. Should've thrown it right back in her face that it is Obama who has been threatening withholding checks.

And Pelosi's "I don't even know what you're talking about" comment? Well, that pretty much sums up where she is on any issue.

Then we can be sure the soldiers, sailors, marines, and coasties will not get paid,
Grandma and Grandpa will not get their checks, and the sick will not receive treatment.

The media will cover for obama/geitner and continue to spread lies in order to throw blame onto republicans.
