MSNBC’s O’Donnell Slams ‘Merchants of Death’ Who ‘Buy Their Political Protection from the NRA’

By Brad Wilmouth | January 24, 2011 | 23:19

A  A

On Monday’s the Last Word show, in its new 8:00 p.m. time slot, MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell referred to the manufacturers of high-capacity magazines as "merchants of death" who purchase "their political protection from the NRA." As he continued his push for a ban on magazines with 30 bullets in light of the Tucson shootings, O’Donnell dismissed a statement from the NRA which argued that such magazines are useful in self-defense, and went on to make his latest attack on the manufacturers:

So the merchants of death are buying their political protection from the NRA and leave us to stare at our children and wonder: Who among them will be the next nine-year-old their high-capacity magazines unload on? The next Christina Taylor Green.

He went on to plead with President Obama to talk about gun control in the State of the Union Address, or otherwise "become part of the problem." O’Donnell:

If the President follows Republican and Democratic tradition tomorrow night and says not a word about gun and ammunition control, if he does not use this moment of his increasing popularity, if he does not believe he has the communication skills to convey the necessity to control the capacity of automatic weapons, then I, for one, will become disappointed in him for the first time. And he will become part of the problem.

Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of MSNBC’s the Last Word from Monday, January 24:

LAWRENCE O’DONNELL: Time for tonight's "Rewrite." On the eve of President Obama's State of the Union Address, he is facing mounting pressure to grab onto one this nation's political third rails in tomorrow’s speech - gun control. In those first days after the Tucson massacre, the calls for reform started right here on this network, particularly when it comes to outlawing the previously banned high-capacity magazines like the one Jared Loughner is suspected of using on January 8. Then, Senator Frank Lautenberg and Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy announced they would introduce legislation to renew the ban on high-capacity magazines. On the Web site of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, a statement refers to that sensible reform as, "one of several schemes," and goes on to say, "These magazines are standard equipment for self-defense handguns and other firearms owned by tens of millions of Americans. Law-abiding private citizens choose them for many reasons, including the same reason police officers do: to improve their odds in defensive situations."

Okay, NRA. It's now on you to show us a case of anyone who could not defend themselves during the 10 years these magazines were banned, anyone who could not defend themselves with 10 bullets instead of 30 bullets. Just show us those cases, and then we'll decide if it's worth it to subject everyone else in the country to the risks of the Jared Loughners who could appear with 30 bullets ready to fire in any shopping mall parking lot in America. The Center for Public Integrity published a report showing that for the past 18 years the makers of these high-capacity magazines have raised millions of dollars for the NRA. The same report also notes, "Some of these vendors of high-capacity magazines also boast executives who are board members of the NRA."

So the merchants of death are buying their political protection from the NRA and leave us to stare at our children and wonder: Who among them will be the next nine-year-old their high-capacity magazines unload on? The next Christina Taylor Green.

[RECOUNTS NEW YORK MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG AND MARTIN LUTHER KING, III, TAKING PART IN A NEWS CONFERENCE TALKING ABOUT GUN LAWS]

We can only hope that the President's speech writers were just taking notes.

Lawrence, I've never shot anybody, and I certainly don't look forward to a day when I might be forced into that situation.

And Lawrence, I hope you don't, as Rick Sanchez did, kill a pedestrian with your car.

Is it that we should outlaw cars? or liberal journalists from driving them?

First time? BS. Crazy Larry has on numerous occasions expressed his disappointment with Obama.

Of course, it's always that Obama never went far enough for him.

Our Secret Service carry all

Submitted by jdhawk on Mon, 01/24/2011 - 11:47pm.

Our Secret Service carry all manner of weapons with BIG magazines.  They protect POTUS.  For the rest us O'Donnel would have the police like Gomer Dipstick from Pima County, AZ protect us like he and his men did a judge, a congresswoman, and 14 others.

Meanwhile, the likes of O'Donnel have all manner of security protection including bodyguards   And, yes, they carry whatever weapons and magazines big or small that they care too.

Whether it's Lawerence or Rosie O'Donnel, hypocrites all.

Cover and concealment---

Submitted by matthewdean on Mon, 01/24/2011 - 11:52pm.

Concealment is being hidden from the shooter and his bullets; cover is protection that will stop the shooters' bullets. Rosie O'Donnell's armed bodyguards love working for her cuz if the bullets start flying, hiding behind her provides both.

Automatic? Automatic?  Again

Submitted by Ashrak on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 12:03am.

Automatic? Automatic?  Again he makes a fool of himself in not even knowing what he is talking about.

"Okay, NRA. It's now on you to show us a case of anyone who could not defend themselves during the 10 years these magazines were banned, anyone who could not defend themselves with 10 bullets instead of 30 bullets."

Every law abiding person in Illinois, Lawrence. What say you, homey?  :crickets:

Fact so easily destroy the intellectual lightweights who think they know about that which they really do not.

And as for Obama on gun control, he said ONE THING about that subject publicly and it was zapped like his call on the Bears beating the Packers. He said he agreed with the D.C. ban (as did Holder) and how wrong he was. Notice he has not said squat about it since. He knows better than to say anything and doing so will only hurt him. Sorry Lawerence - you lose again.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

LARRY THE LEGEND

Submitted by Herbster on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 12:25am.

Little Larry is a legend in his own mind.  He probably has a big secret like most of his leftist pals.  He just might have a .357 under the mattress........for insurance purposes.  Most of the anti-gun folks are armed, or have armed bodyguards.  Remember, liberals know what is good for YOU.....they, of course, hew to a different standard.  Gun grabber Diane Feinstein admitted a few years back that she carries a .38 in her handbag.  Anyhow, Larry, ....BANG!  Comcast is a comin'!

I dare guess

Submitted by Tugboat Phil on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 12:25am.

that many more 9 year old girls have been killed by violent criminals, released early from their sentences by libe....socialists like O'Donnell.

How many single mothers wished they had a semi-auto with a high cap magazine, as sociopath ex husbands or boyfriends crashed through their front door with a large knife?

How many people does O'Donnell personally know that live in areas where police response time is geographically limited to around 30 minutes?  These people ARE their own first responders.

But aside from that, Mr. O, who the eff are you to decide if or how an American citizen chooses to protect themselves and their family?

President Obama is a Muslim (from his own lips), Kenyan (read it from his publicist) a homosexual (read it on a news magazine cover) and a Socialist (I'm alive and can see it for myself)

Gun Control

Submitted by Deskpilot on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 5:04am.

can be properly defined as the ability of the user to properly and safely bring his weapon of choice UP to the target and fire as many rounds as necessary as quickly as possibly into the target to neutralize said target to prevent it from harming you, or for preparing dinner.

Gun Control, as spoken by liberals = Reduction in capacity of law abiding citizens to protect themselves..

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read it in English, You're welcome - Deskpilot, AM(H)1 (AW), USN (Ret)

Larry the Lame

Submitted by HockeyKid on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 7:44am.

doesn't know the first thing about firearms or self-protection.  The "automatic" weapons he whines about are already the most highly regulated firearms in America.  You can't even own the gun--never mind the magazines--without a special federal license issued by BATFE.

Goodbye, Larry.

Oh GOODNESS!!!

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 9:40am.

Lawrence will be disappointed with the President Of The United States! Whatever will Obama do. Should he grovel at MSLSD's front door, begging for forgivness and immediately appoint O'Donnell as the new Gun Czar?

Show you the cases and you'll decide if they're worth it? Who the frig are YOU to decide ANYTHING for me, you arrogant, ill-informed moron?

And oh, BTW, Lawrence - you are one stinking POS sunavabitch bringing up the death of a 9 year-old in a lame attempt to make your point. Show me some tangible, FACTUAL evidence that high-capacity magazines have ANY bearing at all on increasing criminal use of firearms before you start spewing your inane diatribes. And no, it's not incumbent on the NRA (or anyone else) to make a case FOR high-capacity magazines. It's on YOU to make a case against them.

"...if he does not believe he has the communication skills to convey the necessity to control the capacity of automatic weapons..."

Another thing for you to try and get a clue on Lawrence, Loughner DID NOT use an "automatic" weapon. He used a semi-automatic  weapon. Learn the basics before you try to advise on gun policy for the entire nation.

You friggin scumbag pinhead!

Bullets will only rattle in a

Submitted by Joe C Camel on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 10:19am.

Bullets will only rattle in a magazine Larry. It is best to have a complete cartridge if one is going to protect something/someone with a semi-automatic firearm. As far as banning the high capacity magazines, during the "Assualt Weapons Ban", you could still buy all of them you wanted, just cost more money; due to being "Grandfathered" in.

Evil people exist, and as long as they do, there will be death and destruction in the world no matter how much you would like that not to be the case. Man has slaughtered man from the beginning of time, and it will continue. Logic seems to never seep through to a Liberal/Progressive/ whatever buzz term they use today.

Ban on 30?

Submitted by InfidelMan on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 12:55pm.

Ah yes, another ban to keep crazies from killing others. Let's see, they tell us to be tolerant, that we're not supposed to "ram our ideas down their throats" and, well just about every other retort that they can muster against those they disagree with. Ok, we'll ban the 30 round clip and then turn around and offer in its place, a 31 round clip. Yea! Their problem solved. This is the United States of America, not some fantasy land they think we should be living in. There won't be a perfect world because we're imperfect human beings and some are more imperfect than others!

I wonder if Adam and Eve

Submitted by bassndude on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 1:03pm.

I wonder if Adam and Eve passed laws aginst rocks and clubs? Ever wonder what the world would look like today if David's sling had been outlawed? Or the chariot?

If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. Outlaw guns, and you can create a whole new breed of outlaw.
