ABC, FNC Highlight Dem Senator Menendez Comparing Republicans to Terrorists

By Brad Wilmouth | December 05, 2010 | 03:11

A  A

On Saturday morning, FNC’s Fox and Friends Saturday and ABC’s Good Morning America highlighted Democratic Senator Bob Menendez’s assertion that negotiating with Republicans taxes is like negotiating with terrorists. NBC’s Today show included a brief mention, but CBS’s The Early Show and CNN Saturday Morning ignored the New Jersey Democrat’s over-the-top rhetoric.

FNC included a soundbite of Menendez in the opening teaser, as co-host Alisyn Camerota asked if the "hostile words" of Democrats would "hurt negotiations." On ABC, correspondent David Kerley included a clip of the "tough language," and co-host Bianna Golodryga gave Republican Senator Orrin Hatch a chance to respond as the Utah Senator appeared as a guest. Golodryga: " I want to begin by asking your response to that dramatic language we heard from your Democratic counterpart, Senator Menendez, basically calling Republicans terrorists with regards to the process of tax cuts."

FNC began its show:

ALISYN CAMEROTA: Good morning, everyone. It's Saturday, December 4. Two major tax votes happening today in the Senate, but are the Democrats' hostile words hurting negotiations?

SENATOR BOB MENENDEZ (D-NJ): It's almost like the question of: Do you negotiate with terrorists?

CAMEROTA: So much for compromise. Is a deal between lawmakers happening or a lost cause?

Moments later, co-host Clayton Morris introduced soundbites of several Democratic Senators attacking Republicans, and, an hour later, similar clips were used again, including a more extended version of the Menendez quote. Morris described "rhetoric" from Democratic Senators as possibly not having been "fair and measured," and found the words were "raising some eyebrows":

CLAYTON MORRIS, AFTER A JOE BIDEN CLIP: That seems like fair and measured rhetoric there, but what we were hearing yesterday on Capitol Hill may have not been fair and measured. We were hearing from a number of Democratic Congressmen, and they were using some analogies that are raising some eyebrows this morning about Republicans and their votes to extend the Bush-era tax cuts. Take a listen.

MENENDEZ: Do you allow yourself to be held hostage and get something done for the sake of getting something done when, in fact, it might be perverse in its ultimate result? It's almost like the question of: Do you negotiate with terrorists?

SENATOR CLAIRE MCCASKILL (D-MO): I will tell you this. If they think it's okay to raise taxes for the embattled middle class because they're gonna pout if we don't give more money to millionaires, it really is time for the people of America to take up pitchforks.

On Today, NBC’s Savannah Guthrie referred to the "language" being "tough" as she included the clip in a report:

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: The language is getting tough, from a Democrat referring to Republicans:

SENATOR BOB MENENDEZ (D-NJ): It's almost like the question of: Do you negotiate with terrorists?

Below is a transcript of relevant portions of ABC’s Good Morning America, FNC’s Fox and Friends Saturday, and NBC’s Today show from Saturday, December 4:

#From the December 4 Good Morning America on ABC:

DAVID KERLEY: And those latest job numbers, Bianna, will serve as a backdrop for a debate here today. They’ll be talking about tax cuts. The action will be in the Senate as Democrats try to extend the cuts just for the middle class. The language is getting tough, from a Democrat referring to Republicans:

SENATOR BOB MENENDEZ (D-NJ): It’s almost like the question of: Do you negotiate with terrorists?

KERLEY: Menendez says that, by demanding that the tax cuts be extended to the rich, too, Republicans are holding the middle class tax cuts hostage. Democrats are desperate. They will also try to raise the tax cuts to cover anyone making up to a million dollars, but Republicans are expected to beat back both efforts.

SENATOR TOM COBURN (R-OK): If we don’t extend the tax cuts, the economy is going to go like that. There’s no question about it.

KERLEY: All this the day after those latest job numbers which even the administration had to admit was worse than expected.

...

GOLODRYGA: I want to begin by asking your response to that dramatic language we heard from your Democratic counterpart, Senator Menendez, basically calling Republicans terrorists with regards to the process of tax cuts.

SENATOR ORRIN HATCH (R-UT): Well, that’s kind of unfortunate, especially since they’ve had four years with overwhelming majorities of both the House and the Senate, and two years with overwhelming majorities in the House and the Senate and the presidency, and they haven’t done a doggone thing, and here we are, one day after they just announced that unemployment has gone up 9.8 percent, almost 10 percent, and if you talk about the underemployment rate, include those who won’t even look for a job now or just given up, you’re talking about over 18 percent, and these people want to raise taxes? I don’t know anybody with any brains who really believes that we should raise taxes during a time like this. And yet, you know, I think Senator Menendez probably wishes he hadn’t said those remarks. They were kind of stupid remarks for somebody as intelligent as he is.

#From the December 4 Fox and Friends on FNC:

ALISYN CAMEROTA, IN OPENING TEASER: Good morning, everyone. It’s Saturday, December 4, two major tax votes happening today in the Senate, but are the Democrats’ hostile words hurting negotiations?

SENATOR BOB MENENDEZ (D-NJ): It’s almost like the question of: Do you negotiate with terrorists?

CAMEROTA: So much for compromise. Is a deal between lawmakers happening or a lost cause?

...

7:02 a.m.

CLAYTON MORRIS: And there was agreement - bipartisan agreement - in our debate we just had a few minutes ago between Doug Schoen and Bryan Darling, both saying on both sides of the aisle, look, we think a compromise is in the works, and that this jobs report really does fuel the fire for a compromise between the two. Although you wouldn’t know that listening to some of the rhetoric yesterday from Capitol Hill. In fact, many Democrats, a group of Democrats - Claire McCaskill, Chuck Schumer and Bob Menendez - well, we’ll let them speak for themselves. Take a listen.

SENATOR BOB MENENDEZ (D-NJ): Do you allow yourself to be held hostage and get something done for the sake of getting something done when, in fact, it might be perverse in its ultimate result?

SENATOR CHUCK SCHUMER (D-NY): Republicans are not for the Tea Party. They’re for the people with sterling silver tea service.

MENENDEZ: Our Republican colleagues are playing Santa Claus for millionaires but Scrooge for the middle class.

SENATOR CLAIRE MCCASKILL (D-MO) CLIP #1: If they think it’s okay to raise taxes for the embattled middle class-

MCCASKILL CLIP #2: -it really is time for the people of America to take up pitchforks.

MORRIS: So you hear from the Democrats on that side likening, Bob Menendez , Republican negotiating tactics to terrorists. And then you have, of course, John Boehner on the other side likening what the Democrats were doing as political showmanship or, to use his words, "Democratic leaders continue to insist or wasting time with meaningless votes as they try to make it as difficult as possible to stop their job killing tax hike. Families and small businesses have had enough of politicians in Washington talking about creating jobs while doing everything in their power to kill more jobs... As economists and small business owners have warned, the last thing our economy needs right now is a job-killing tax hike."

...

8:06 a.m.

MORRIS: That seems like fair and measured rhetoric there, but what we were hearing yesterday on Capitol Hill may have not been fair and measured.

It’s almost like the question of: Do you negotiate with terrorists?

MCCASKILL: I will tell you this. If they think it’s okay to raise taxes for the embattled middle class because they’re gonna pout if we don’t give more money to millionaires, it really is time for the people of America to take up pitchforks.

#From the December 4 Today show on NBC:

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: Following the House’s lead, Senate Democrats plan to hold symbolic votes today to extend lower tax rates for middle class families only. But the measure will fail without the support of Republicans, who are holding out for tax relief for all taxpayers, including top earners. On Friday, visibly frustrated Democrats turned up the rhetoric.

SENATOR BOB MENENDEZ (D-NJ): It’s almost like the question of: Do you negotiate with terrorists?

GUTHRIE: But Republicans said it was Democrats wasting time.

SENATOR ORRIN HATCH (R-UT): It is too risky for all of our constituents to aim for partisan stunts. The clock is ticking.

Sometimes you gotta punch these Libs in the nose.  Pertaining this one who stand there with his "pals" and calls you names.  I say punch back!  That's when you know if he'll run home to his mother or stand and fight back.  And I bet that BOB MENENDEZ, the so-call protector of rightousness, would run home crying to his mother.

The fact is that this "crowd" standing there, name calling, actually believes that it's within their right and it's "their" $$$ to take.

The focus should be that it starts with the "rich" but then later on, it WILL be the rest of "us".  It will never end with these blood suckers.  They can Bite me!

Submitted by motherbelt on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 8:38am.

These journalists didn't flinch when the phrase "Taliban wing of the Republican party" was being tossed around, or when Alan Grayson was saying "Republicans want you to die quickly!" or any number of other horrible things Republicans were accused of.

Why the sudden sensitivity??  Let's not kid ourselves, when reporters say "raising some eyebrows" they mean their own.  Because plenty of eyebrows went up at previous attacks; just not theirs.

They are finally surprised at the hate spewing from  liberals.  Well, I guess we should be glad that they have some standards!

Congress Is Lost

Submitted by Bourbeau on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 9:11am.

These comments by Bob Menendez are indicative of the childish mind games played by our congressmen, on both sides of the aisle.  It's the diahrhea of the mouth syndrome, they can't help themselves.  They see a microphone and suddenly they all think they're Jay Lenno, Jon Stewart, or whoever and they need to show their comedic acumen.  In reality, they have a paid hack behind them feeding them the stupid and insulting one lines; but it doesn't matter, the press outlets pick it up and it becomes the 'one liner of the day".

As a country we're lost; we've lost our way; we've lost our values; we've lost our leadership as a country of doers and have become a country of takers; and worst of all, we have lost our political leadership - we're left with a cadre of political hacks whose only goal in life is to demean, offend, and stall aiding our country from getting back on it's feet.

We've bankrupted ourselves and we are all the blame.  Yes, that line from Menendez was stupid, but it's the collective thinking of both sides of Congress that is stupid and none of them pay for it. They steal; they enrich themselves with PACSs and lobbyists money; they ignore their own ethics rules (e.g. Ragle and Waters); and they're not the least embarassed and all we do is watch - look at Charlie Rangel and the outrage of his constituents - they re-elected him and he was thierf.

As I said, Congress is lost, and so are we.

Democrats seem to enjoy villifying their opponents, calling them the Taliban wing, accusing them of wanting people to die, racism, etc.

Offhand, I can't think of matching rhetoric on the Republican side; at least I don't recall them using analogies such as comparing Democrats to terrorists.

You're Not Serious!

Submitted by Bourbeau on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 9:49am.

Every day, every media outlet, recalls some statement by one of these political mouthpieces offering a demeaning assessment of the other side - just about every single day.  They can't express an opinion on anything without offering their comedic pins and needles.  You see it every time the Speaker, the Minority Leader; the Majority Leader; or any congressional leader stands before a microphone with four, five, six or ten of his supporters nodding their heads.  What the hell good does that do in reaching a determination on policy? Why aren't they in a locked rooms debating an issue and determining a policy, rather then the charades that go on day after day?  Look at went on last year with health care and cap & trade where the Democrats, in this case, looked for every angle possible to screw the Republicans.  And we saw similar stuff from the Republicans back in the early 2000s.  They are both guily of this poisonous commentary and they both deserve criticism.  It doesn't matter whether you or I have heard them make that demeaning comment; but you damn well know the level of sewer commentary by talking heads on both sidesthat  fill the air waves every day.  Shoul Menendez be criticized? Absolutely!  Are Republicans sinless in this mess we're dealing with?  Absolutely not!  Do they all have to grow up and get down to the nitty gritty of fixing this country's economy?  We can only pray because right now they're too busy dropping one liners at a microphone.

Yes, you're right about their running for the microphones to attack the other side, but Republicans don't normally accuse the other side of terrorism or murderous inclinations.

But I still maintain that Republican rhetoric doesn't even approach the hate that spews from the left.

it doesn't matter if the Republicans are less offensive then the Democrats, while the country is sinking in the quick sand of over regulation, debt, excessive spending, and unelected bureacrats going crazy with regulations in Commerce, Environmental and Oil and Gas areas.  They collectively have to stop the crap; yet there's no one that I see who is even close to bringing this nonsense to a halt.  Not Nanncy Pelosi; not Harry Reid; or Shumer, or Durbn, or McConnell; or Boehner; or Cantor.  Certainly not the likes of McCain or Graham.   While we fret about he said this, and that guy said that, the place is being overrun by leftist and rightist morons.

We Need Money and We Need It Now

Submitted by Bourbeau on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 10:06am.

How hard can this possibly be?  Here's four things they could do today that will free a fair amount of cash and probably bring in truck loads of revenue to the Treasury; not to mention, there is probably another dozen things they can do spur some revenue generationa and expense reduction.

A.  Immediately assess a one time 5% emergency tax on all corporations and base it on theiry 2009 taxes paid - whatever the amount.  If no taxes were paid, assess a reasonable amount based on their profit margins.

B. Impose an immediate freeze on federal hiring and spending; no hires or replacement; no raises; absolutely nothing, and every department must comply.

C.Require every department, including the White House and Congress, to cut their 2011 budgets back to their 2008 expenditures level - no magic, here's your number, go cut your spending.

D.Approve a one time reallocation of all 401K/IRA monies from taxable accounts to non-taxable - establish an arbittrary 'tax rate" that includes an attractive non-tax threshhold for lower account balances but clearly shares the tax savings on the higher account balances so if you're in the 30% bracket, your rate becomes 15; 25%, your rate becomes 12.5%.  When it's all over, everyone with a taxable IRA/401K will have the chance to move to a non-taxable account and split the savings on taxes owed w/Uncle Sam.

Will they do it?  No!  Why?  Because they're too busy zinging one another while the country wallows in quick sand.

Media Malfeasance

Submitted by MediaMike on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 10:07am.

The media continues to allow these people to misrepresent the facts: They're not "giving" anything to anybody by extending the tax cuts. They are taking AWAY money from the rich and from the economy. Taking money away from anyone is not a good idea, especially during a recession.

Submitted by xraynova on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 10:10am.

Kerley: Menendez says that by demanding that the tax cuts be extended to the rich, too, Republicans are holding the middle class tax cuts hostage.

If that is a fair assessment of the situation, then an equally fair assessment would be to say that... by demanding that the Bush tax cuts not be uniformly extended to everyone, the democrats are forcing everyone's taxes to be hiked.

Too bad we only hear & see only the former of these assessments from any news source.

Hatch: ...I think Senator Menendez probably wishes that he hadn't said those remarks. They were kind of stupid remarks for someone as intelligent as he is.

Unless Hatch has information on a recent IQ test to the contrary, you have to go with the plethora of stupid comments menendez has made over the years, as an indication that indeed, this guy is actually stupid... with an outside chance that he is practicing political opportunism.

Case in point is the recent gain in momentum of the lib. talking point that dispersing even more unemployment checks will grow jobs and churn the economy (if this were true, then the economy would have at least turned the corner by now). Eveyone- even liberals- know that this theory is vapid and senseless, to the point of sounding stupid, to any normally thinking person. When liberals go off-camera after making such remarks, they just have to be blurting out in laughter at their own words- knowing all the time, that there still remains a considerable voting block of government-schooled undereducated voters who will actually believe them.

Orrin Hatch calls Menendez out for making stupid remarks, and even before he has the sentence completed, is making nice again.

Dem and Media, same message

Submitted by wdvander on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 2:25pm.

The media thinks that liberals calling conservatives terrorists to be "tough" language.  Liberals still think that reducing income tax rates to be "giving" money to "millionaires".  The reason almost half the population does not pay income taxes is because of the tax rates implemented during the term of George W. Bush.  The reason the top 7% of tax payers pay 50% of the income taxes collected by the federal government is because of the tax system implemented during the Bush 43 term.

I find anyone saying that keeping current tax rates in place is giving money to the rich to be lacking credibility in economic ideals.
