ABC, NBC Relay Cindy McCain’s Support for Gays in Military
On Friday evening, ABC’s World News and the NBC Nightly News both informed viewers that Cindy McCain - wife of Senator John McCain - supports repealing the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy on gays in the military. NBC’s Chuck Todd merely mentioned her disagreement with her husband on the issue while noting that Senator McCain "is the guy holding up" any change in the law.
But ABC went further in showing a clip of Cindy McCain from a Web ad asserting that homosexuals in America are treated "like second-class citizens." Anchor Diane Sawyer introduced the clip: "And someone we haven’t heard from in a while, Cindy McCain, wife of Senator John McCain, speaking out, disagreeing with her husband who opposes a repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. She condemned the government policy that prevents gays from serving openly in the military."
Then came a clip of Cindy McCain: "Our government treats the LGBT community like second-class citizens."
Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Friday, November 12, World News on ABC, followed by the relevant portion of the same day’s NBC Nightly News:
#From ABC’s World News:
DIANE SAWYER: And someone we haven’t heard from in a while, Cindy McCain, wife of Senator John McCain, speaking out, disagreeing with her husband who opposes a repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. She condemned the government policy that prevents gays from serving openly in the military.
CINDY MCCAIN IN WEB AD: Our government treats the LGBT community like second-class citizens.
SAWYER: And, by the way, today the Supreme Court ordered that the policy should stand until a federal appeals court rules on the issue.
#From the NBC Nightly News:
CHUCK TODD: Then there’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, that law, Brian. The Supreme Court decided today it’s not going to intervene in an appeal that would temporarily suspend the law. This puts the issue of gays serving openly in the military back in the hands of the courts unless Congress changes the law. And, Brian, Senator John McCain is the guy holding it up right now here, which, by the way, puts him at odds with his own wife, Cindy McCain, who is arguing to see the law repealed.

Where's Meghan????

She couldn't muscle herself into there to, you know, speak as a 26-year-old woman??
Leave it to Sawyer to make a big deal out of that. I'll bet most of the people who see that video don't even recognize McCain. Heck, I don't know who half those people are, because I pay scant attention to Hollywood.
And leave it to Sawyer to ignore the whole point of the video, and focus instead on Cindy mcCain's comment about the military.
So what's more important to Sawyer?
Way to work that McCain dig, in there, Diane!!

Maybe Cindy should advocate for gays in Muslim countries.

If she thinks gays are treated as second class citizens here, maybe she should use some of her Budweiser millions to prevent gays from being executed in Muslim countries just for being gay.
Cindy McCain has served how

Cindy McCain has served how long in the military?
She would know how young fighting men feel about living in close quarters with openly Gay men how?
She knows more than our military leaders because...?
She is like Hollywoods big mouths. They can tell the rest of us how to live but they have their millions of dollars to wall off any part of the world they don't like.
My thoughts exactly. Unless

My thoughts exactly. Unless one has served in the military they can't realize the damage it can do.
What about Diane Sawyer?

I agree also; but I think also deserving scrutiny are Diane Sawyer's creditials for expertise in what is good for the US Military.

If the DoD survey leaked by the WaPo is accurate . . .

. . . it would appear that the majority of those currently serving favor repeal of DODT.
To be fair to Ms. McCain (and I'm no fan of her or her husband), she was a Navy wife late in his career; her eldest son is a 2009 graduate of the US Naval Academy; and her younger son served as an enlisted Marine in Iraq. While this doesn't make her a military expert, she's certainly more familiar with it than most Americans, including many if not most of our elected officials.

Overwhelmingly and consistently not only support DADT, but actually prefer a return to banning gays from serving in the military.
Sorry, I won't waste my time or yours explaining why. You've made up your mind and thats OK - I just don't like seeing an inaccuracy go unchallenged.
And what mind have I made up?

This story deseves the attention that It gets. A wife of a Presidential nominee disagrees with her husband and goes so far as to appear on a tv ad? Regardless if she is right or not, she is very brave for sticking up for what she beliefes in even if it comes at the expense of her family.
