NBC Sees ‘Conservative’ Toomey, But No Label for Sestak; Gearing Up to Blame Tea Party if No GOP Senate Majority

By Brad Wilmouth | October 31, 2010 | 23:50

A  A

On Sunday’s NBC Nightly News, during a roundup of several reporters covering a number of high-profile Senate races, correspondent Ron Allen was upfront in labeling Pennsylvania Republican Senate nominee Pat Toomey as a "conservative," but an ideological label for liberal Democratic nominee Joe Sestak was absent: "Conservative Pat Toomey, a former Congressman and businessman, has been consistently leading in the polls ahead of Joe Sestak, a Democratic Congressman."

And correspondent Natalie Morales played up the possibility that "a lot of people are going to be blaming the Tea Party" if Republicans land one vote short of a Senate majority and Delaware Republican nominee Christine O’Donnell also loses: "If they're somehow able to get to nine and then Christine O'Donnell loses, a lot of people are going to be blaming the Tea Party."

Below is a transcript of relevant portions of the Sunday, October 31, NBC Nightly News:

RON ALLEN: The Republicans hoped for a big victory here. Conservative Pat Toomey, a former Congressman and businessman, has been consistently leading in the polls ahead of Joe Sestak, a Democratic Congressman. That’s pretty stunning in a state that President Obama won by 10 percentage points, and where Democrats have a 1.2 million voter registration edge.

...

JANET SHAMLIAN: Since her primary win in September, Christine O’Donnell’s campaign has struggled to gain traction. Polls show Democrat Chris Coons with a double-digit lead anywhere from 10 to 20 points. Political observers say, if Republican Congressman Mike Castle had won the Republican primary, he would be the favorite here. And keep in mind, Republicans need to take 10 seats currently held by Democrats to take back the Senate. If they’re somehow able to get to nine and then Christine O’Donnell loses, a lot of people, Lester, are going to be blaming the Tea Party.

Without the tea party

Submitted by KC Mulville on Sun, 10/31/2010 - 11:59pm.

Without the tea party, the GOP would be following James Carville's leadership and they'd be out of luck for the next twelve elections or so.

So they don't regain the Senate? Big deal.

I have written here that I

Submitted by Chris Norman on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 12:10am.

I have written here that I wish, for the sake of a GOP majority in the Senate, that more experienced and vetted conservatives would have been nominated in some senatorial races - even if they diverged from strict conservative ideology on some secondary issues. I still do. However, the liberal media has blamed every (then) new faction of conservatism for "losses" - beginning with conservatism itself and on to "neo-cons", the "Christian Right" et al. What they really want is real conservatism to vanish and, once again, have only Republican liberals and moderates in a permanent, ineffective minority party - like we were up until 1980 .

If Tea Party candidates win

Submitted by big.league.slider on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 12:13am.

If Tea Party candidates win more positions than Democrat candidates, here's the question for the lib's:

Is the post 2010 election Democrat party still viable as a third party?  And does bipartisanship now mean cooperation between Republicans and the Tea Party?

Just asking.

Christine O'Donnell

Submitted by Phryj1 on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 12:19am.

The only reason she's losing is because the media has been relentlessly trashing her at every turn. They did the same thing with Palin back in 2008. Although, I think in the long run, O'Donnell will benefit much the way Palin has, that doesn't do us a whole lot of good right now if she can't defeat capitalism hating Coons. Dems will still have a Senate majority and Obama will have another anti-business far-left stooge in the Senate.

I'm so sick of the media doing whatever they can to support the Democrats.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

Submitted by Chris Norman on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 12:38am.

Well, it may not be fair (and it's sure not balanced), but to be honest, O'Donnell gave the liberal media some material to work with. They had to invent things about Palin.

I would rather have a minority in the Senate

Submitted by gopcongress on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 1:32am.

I would rather have a minority in the Senate, than a majority with RINO's. Even if we don't have the majority, it is far better to have the Republican Party maintain a cohesive, strong conservative message than corrupt itself with the backstabbing politics of yesterday. As long as our conservatives in office maintain our positions and tenets, that would do us better than an elusive Senate majority. The ONLY good majority is when we pick up 55 seats, so we can overcome the Scott Browns and Olympia Snowes who may be tempted to make deals with the commies.

(I admit Scott Brown, however, to be an improvement on the Kennedy-held seat, but the same paradigm applies.)

blame game

Submitted by TerryWest on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 3:15am.

Actually "a lot of people" are grateful the tea party has shaken DC up like a snow globe.

If an astroid hit the earth "a lot" of liberal media will blame the Tea party

I noted they are jumping right over the house and to the senate, right over their own collusion to destroy O'Donnell and keep Coons the shadows.

there they go again....

Submitted by motherbelt on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 6:14am.

"a lot of people are going to be blaming the Tea Party" if Republicans land one vote short of a Senate majority and Delaware Republican nominee Christine O’Donnell also loses:

Again, with the "a lot of people....."   Gosh, and there I  was, figuring that if the Republicans didn't regain the Senate, that the media would claim the Tea Partiers either didn't explain it well, or people just didn't "give them credit."   What was I thinking??  That's the reason Democrats lose!  Republicans and Tea Partiers will lose because people are sending them a message that they want them to move "into the mainstream."

And AP comes in again with "ultra-conservative"

Submitted by ThisnThat on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 7:04am.

This is what AP says about the Alaska Senate race: ...Republican primary winner Joe Miller, a favorite of the ultraconservative tea party movement who is backed by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Ultraconservative is an ideological label that has no place whatsoever in this article. AP did not quote anyone who applied this label. And AP didn't label the democrats that were mentioned in this article -- even when they described the candidate as "supporting abortion and equal rights for gays and lesbians".

So why does AP continue to insert their own biased labeling into their writings? In fact, I have not seen a recent AP article that excludes the ultraconservative label whenever Tea Party is mentioned. Do you think that AP has an inherant bias? Would they agree to be labeled "liberal-biased AP" whenever AP is mentioned in the future?
