Bill Donohue Column: It's the First Amendment, Stupid!
The central issue in the fight between the Obama administration and the Catholic Church is the right of the federal government to redefine religious institutions as entities that hire and serve mostly people of their own faith. Secondarily, the fight is over forcing Catholics to pay for abortion-inducing drugs. But one looks in vain for the Church’s critics to even acknowledge this reality. It’s not contraception that is in play—“It’s the First Amendment, Stupid.”
The New York Times says the Obama mandate “specifically exempts houses of worship.” Try telling that to Donald Cardinal Wuerl who runs the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.; it is a self-insured entity and thus must be forced to pay for morally objectionable services. The Times says most American Catholic women do not agree with the Church’s contraception stand, but fails to mention that because of the Obama administration’s disrespect for religious liberty, support for Obama has dropped precipitously among Catholic women.
Washington Post reporter Lisa Miller argues that a “small group of very conservative bishops have hijacked the church,” and cites Stockton Bishop Stephen Blaire as taking the other side. She is wrong. Three days before Miller’s piece ran, Blaire issued a statement saying, “I stand solidly with my brother bishops in our common resolve to overturn the unacceptable intrusion of government into the life of the Church by the HHS Mandate.”
Here’s what is really driving this story. The secular critics of the Catholic Church, beginning with HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, are so out of touch with Catholic sentiment today that they seriously misread the reaction to this issue. Moreover, they thoroughly underestimated the resolve of today’s crop of Catholic bishops. Now they are trying to deflect what is really happening, but it’s too late.

The 1st Amendment will stand the test of time and Obama Liberals.
But only if we stand behind it, and stand up for it!
religious freedom or tyranny

One of the strongest pillars to the founding of this country was the waves of immigrants searching for religious freedom. If we lose that we are no longer America.
regarding "...the establishment of religion"

This attempt to subjugate a Religion, by coercion, indeed, by penalty of jail if not complied with to their satisfaction, marks the single greatest distance from the original intent of the founders, as has ever been seen in this country. Light years from how they saw the role of government regarding it's interaction with religions. From visualizing a system where the govt. deferred to the idiosyncratic religious beliefs of the individual, or the collective, to where the Central government becomes the arbitrator of the individual's beliefs, is where we have arrived. A testament to the hateful tenacity of the Church's enemies. (And they are legion.)
If Catholic Institutions are compelled, by the full power of some entity called the Federal government, into suppling abortion assistance, in any stinkin form, then the government will have done nothing less than establish a new Religion. One that suits their beliefs. Not really Catholic anymore, but one that more adheres to their doctine. Their Religion. With their beliefs overlaid atop the whole 2000 year old teachings of the Church. Not the teachings of the Roman Catholic church, but the teachings of "The Obama".
Great point

In a book I read about Yoder vs. Wisconsin (a case involing the Amish desire to withdraw their children from secondary school), it was clear that bigamy and human sacrifice are just about the only things the court has said "no" to on the religious freedom issue.
Ever read the Preamble to the " Bill of Rights?"

THE Conventions of a number of the
States having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a
desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that
further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as
extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best
insure the beneficent ends of its institution....
Lots of talk about Catholic institutions, but...

I don't understand why any observant, lay Catholic who owns a business and pays a portion of his employees health costs (or any other person of any other faith, who does not want his money going towards birth control, or abortion-inducing drugs) cannot claim the mantle of religious freedom.
Why does no one ever bring that up? No one is saying the employee cannot purchase on her own.
Good one

"It's the First Amendment, Stupid!" is good! I'll have to use that one myself. It might even be a good bumper sticker.
