Team Obama Celebrates July 4... with Paris Fundraiser

By Ben Shapiro | July 02, 2012 | 10:06

A  A

Apparently tiring of US soil as a source of campaign dollars, the Obama campaign is headed overseas -- with its celebrity friends in tow. The European Obama campaign starts next week in Paris on July 4 with a reception organized by various fundraising heavy-hitters. Independence Day fundraisers in Paris – now that’s a flag-waving campaign.

The Obama campaign will host events in Geneva, Switzerland in August as part of their “European outreach effort.” George Clooney will headline a fundraiser there, with 150 tickets going for $20,000 per piece. There’s even more to the bargain: if you go as a couple, the second ticket is half-off!

With the Obama campaign’s increasingly desperate campaign emails begging for cash from the American people, perhaps the campaign thinks they’ll find more fertile soil outside the country. Especially in the aftermath of the Supreme Court ruling that upholds Obama’s European-style healthcare plan, Obama’s hoping to cash in on like-minded folks abroad. Americans don’t believe that Obamacare is a triumph; they see it as a massive net negative, sucking our coffers dry and handing us long-term rationing in return. Europeans, however, know nothing else. The entitlements have already kicked in. What better place to ask for campaign cash?

That also may be the only place Obama can still find cheering throngs.

Is fundraising overseas legal?

Submitted by motherbelt on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 10:58am.

Even leaving that out, Obama attended 33 fundraisers in June.

No wonder the poor man is so exhausted that he had to take a pre-holiday weekend holiday at Camp David!

How will he ever make it through Monday and Tuesday before he jets off to Paris???

All this man seems to do is fly around to parties  and socialize with celebrities. It's all he's good at.

And someone posted here the other day about Obama doing fundraising on Air Force One and whether it was legal.

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air has something to say about it.

Nice.

The fact remains that Obama & his campaign have sunk to new depths of gauche this campaign season. Donate to Obama in lieu of gifts for all occasions, and "it's a BFD" t-shirts for sale.

All of your misdirection won't change that one iota. But keep shilling.

Jer, everyone here is all too familiar with your passive-aggressive tactic of pretending to ask innocent questions.

If what you say is true or even mostly true, that is indeed disheartening. However, I thought someone had posted recently that at least links would still be possible. [Not being a Disqus veteran, I have very little idea of what to expect.]

One other thing: I also thought that NB Forums would remain accessible for commenting in the same manner as in the past. Am I wrong about that?

In any event, like most others it seems, I'm not looking forward to the switch.

As usual, not a peep from the "classy" motherbelt.

In this instance, the fact is I didn't see any report that Obama himself would be spending Independence Day fundraising in France, but I thought maybe it was included somewhere within the two sources motherbelt linked.  I do know this:  If I had falsely alleged Romney would be fundraising overseas on the 4th, I would have been reviled as a liar, a moron, you name it.  I wouldn't have been simply asked to point out the information, as in the manner I asked motherbelt, (and then slammed anyway for daring to do so.)  And I wouldn't have shrugged off my error with an "is that the best you've got"?...which is how Blonde covered for motherbelt.

If I had phrased my initial question on this thread..."motherbelt, I believe you may be mistaken if you are implying Obama is traveling to Paris for a 4th of July fundraiser"...I still seriously doubt she would have responded based on past history. And, as I said, I wasn't entirely sure that Obama WASN'T going overseas.

I believed it to be a fair question, and far less provocative than had I been the addressee. And, in that same vein, do libs have to walk on eggshells with every question and comment while conservatives have carte blanche?

Helping out -

Submitted by Agnostic on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 2:50pm.

I don't think you should have done anything but what you did - being offended is the prerogative of the reader regardless of intent.

It falls into the realm of weaknesses of written communication. Though I believe the estimations to be high it is commonly believed that most communication is non-verbal. Even at the percentages I would estimate (60-65%) the idea that sincerity is going to show through is highly unlikely. Throwing out any hope for friendly reading by many posters would seem obvious.

Under the assumption that Motherbelt nor Blonde knew at the time that you did not know whether Obama was off to Paris - to answer your question about how to phrase the 'initial question' - why is it a question? Stating someone made a mistake can be interpreted as either being of aid or pointed out a flaw. Asking a question that points out the mistake will usually be interpreted as trying to draw attention to the error. While this can be educational in the proper atmosphere the chances of it being received well on a site where you are the minority is remote.

I've posted often at Liberal sites - mostly on economic issues and I truly understand what it is like to have every sentence picked apart while the over all matter under discussion is ignored. It boggles the mind to see how deeply many people get bogged down in in their respective dogmas.

Do Libs have to walk on eggshells on a Conservative site? Depends on the type of responses they are willing to accept. However, walking on eggshells will diminish your argument and that is not worth ignoring a handful of responses.

What Do You Want From Life?

Submitted by stratman on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 8:22pm.

What Do You Want From Life
The Tubes

What do you want from life
To kidnap an heiress
or threaten her with a knife
What do you want from life
To get cable TV
and watch it every night

There you sit
a lump in your chair
Where do you sleep
and what do you wear
when you're sleeping

What do you want from life
An Indian guru
to show you the inner light
What do you want from life
a meaningless love affair
with a girl that you met tonight

How can you tell when you're doin' alright
Does your bank account swell
While you're dreaming at night
How do know when you're really in love
Do violins play when you're touching the one
That you're loving

What do you want from life
Someone to love
and somebody that you can trust
What do you want from life
To try and be happy
while you do the nasty things you must

Well, you can't have that, but if you're an American citizen you are entitled to:
a heated kidney shaped pool,
a microwave oven--don't watch the food cook,
a Dyna-Gym--I'll personally demonstrate it in the privacy of your own home,
a king-size Titanic unsinkable Molly Brown waterbed with polybendum,
a foolproof plan and an airtight alibi,
real simulated Indian jewelry,
a Gucci shoetree,
a year's supply of antibiotics,
a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantooth
and Bob Dylan's new unlisted phone number,
a beautifully restored 3rd Reich swizzle stick,
Rosemary's baby,
a dream date in kneepads with Paul Williams,
a new Matador, a new mastodon,
a Maverick, a Mustang, a Montego,
a Merc Montclair, a Mark IV, a meteor,
a Mercedes, an MG, or a Malibu,
a Mort Moriarty, a Maserati, a Mac truck,
a Mazda, a new Monza, or a moped,
a Winnebago--Hell, a herd of Winnebago's we're giving 'em away,
or how about a McCulloch chainsaw,
a Las Vegas wedding,
a Mexican divorce,
a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot,
or a baby's arm holding an apple?

A lot of people are wishing they had a Stihl after all the storm damage these past few days.

While I truly feel for everyone who has suffered storm damage, power outages, and this blazing heat....there's a small part of me that is kind of "welcome to my hurricane world". Nothing like gasoline, about 25 gallons worth, and a generator, baby! Enough electricity to keep the fridge going, power a lightbulb, a fan, cell phone charger, and a small TV. A chain saw is handy, too!

Yep,

We still talk about the 21 days after Katrina, or the 12 after Gustave, and the 9 from the Snow of 08'.

We pray a lot more now.

I hear you. The number of people I know that now have a generator tripled since the big blackout of 2003.

Has there been a forum on NB's about recommendations of things to have in case of emergency/disaster/blackout?

I don't think so, Strat

But it's a really good idea. As a resident of hurricane alley, I have suggestions....(of course, LOL).

For example, I have (5) five gallon gas cans....but I don't fill them until it looks like I might need them. I have probably fifteen flashlights around the house (and a huge supply of batteries)....in fact, I always pack a flashlight or two when I travel. Canned food, and of course some staples like powdered milk (blech)...as well as a couple of extra propane gas tanks for my grill. Bleach.

I'm very fortunate, I have some fabulous neighbors up on the next street who have a commercial grade icemaker that runs on natural gas. So when we lose our power.....they deliver!!! (Funny, I met them because their house number is the same as mine, but we have a confused postal worker).

We've been eyeing fail-over generators for about four years, but the building codes here are ridiculous.

As they say....an ounce of prevention!!!

I have learned one thing over the years about disasters and people. It doesnt matter how much you do to educate people about wild fires, tornadoes, floods, or hurricanes. It doesnt matter how many ways you can help people prepare ahead of time for one of these disasters. Just like the 1500 people stranded on the overpass in NO after Katrina..they replied to a reporter that they were waiting for the MAN to give them a ride out of there....

Responsible people will find the preparations needed to safeguard their families and their property. Irresponsible dependent individuals wont be listening but when in crisis, they will be demanding.

Translate that attitude to politics and our society in general and you can see why we are in a mess.

I was 10 yrs old when Hurricane Audrey killed hundreds of people here in south La. Not a good way to learn but it prepared me for the 20 or so hurricanes I have survived since then. It also prepared me to face difficulties and adult responsibilities in other aspects of life. "an ounce of prevention.....how about...."a lesson learned".....To bad we have no "student interest" anymore.

Emergency Preparations

Submitted by stratman on Wed, 07/04/2012 - 8:26pm.

If the Obama every really hits the fan, I have a couple places to go to if I need to leave the near-inner city behind. Have enough food to feed the block several times over not enough hands and eyes to protect the hacienda from determined and inquiring minds, so to speak.  A fortress this home is not.  Way too much glass. Plus it's cooler in the country versus summertime in the concrete and blacktop suburbs.  And my friends have well water and generators so water won't be an issue like it could be in the city.

If an EMP hits us then I'll be stuck in the city, at least for a while.  It would not be pretty.
