Profile

John Matyi was born in Connecticut, but after graduating from Fordham University with a master’s degree in social work (MSW) he fled the liberal state to bring his family to the South. He moved to Alabama in 1986 starting a career in mental health at the VA hospital in Birmingham and to start a new life for his family. He had fallen in love with the conservative ‘Bible Belt’ while he was stationed in Georgia and Mississippi prior to a one-year tour in Vietnam. He took an early retirement from the VA in 2003 due to wounds he received in battle in 1966.
