At the Chicago Tribune, Republicans Are Wealthy. Democrats, Not So Much

Mike Bates | June 12, 2013 | 15:37

Many in the mainstream believe that the Republican Party is an elitist organization of the affluent while Democrats represent the party of the people.  If that ever were true, it certainly hasn’t been for many years.  Yet the myth persists.

A recent example is The Chicago Tribune, which last week on its Web site headlined “Wealthy Bruce Rauner announces for Republican governor race.”  Yesterday, The Trib went with “Bill Daley to explore run for Illinois governor.”

OpenSecrets.org determined that in 2010 Daley’s “average net worth was an estimated $28.7 million.”  It doesn’t appear that throwing a benefit for him will be necessary any time soon.  Yet his prosperity isn’t even referenced by The Tribune.  Only rich Republicans are newsworthy there.

Chris Hayes Apologizes for Tagging George Wallace As Republican: A ‘Stupid, Inexcusable, Historically Illiterate Mistake’

Jeffrey Meyer | June 12, 2013 | 14:47

The laziness from the folks at NBC News has reached a new low for their sister network MSNBC. On Tuesday June 11, All In w/ Chris Hayes featured an on-screen graphic labeling arch-segregationist Governor George Wallace (D-Ala.) as a Republican. Alerted to the error via Twitter, Hayes apologized this morning.

In a segment marking the 50th anniversary of Governor Wallace personally attempting to block two black students from enrolling at the University of Alabama, host Chris Hayes showed 50-year-old video of Wallace opposing integration, his name appearing onscreen tagged with (R) denoting him as a Republican. Hayes’ analysis of Wallace was correct, labeling him “obviously the villain in this story” but the sloppiness at the “Lean Forward” network minimizes his important point by falsely allowing his already liberal audience to believe Gov. Wallace was a Republican, when in fact he was a Democrat. [See video after jump. MP3 audio here.]

HuffPo Hypes F-Word Celebrity Campaign

Lauren Enk | June 12, 2013 | 14:25

When you’re faced with bullying, then clearly you should be obscene and crass. That’s what HuffPo suggested in their coverage of an anti-bullying campaign called “The New F Word,” a photo campaign using pictures of celebrities flipping the bird in response to bullying.

HuffPo’s “Gay Voices” hailed the obscene photo campaign as “groundbreaking,” and gave a sample slideshow and links to support the project or buy tickets to its fundraising concert. The photo campaign includes such famous faces as Tim Gunn, Adam Lambert, Frenchie Davis, Carmen Electra, LeAnn Rimes, Lance Bass, and Aubrey O'Day--all posing for the camera with the infamous obscene gesture.

MSNBC's Hayes: 'Shameless' Marco Rubio 'Showing Both Faces' on Immigration

Brad Wilmouth | June 12, 2013 | 14:23

On Tuesday's All In show, MSNBC host Chris Hayes accused Republican Senator Marco Rubio of "showing both faces" in trying to make additions to his immigration reform plan, as he found fault with the Florida Senator for trying to add border security and an English language proficiency requirement to the bill. Hayes complained:

HGTV Apologizes for Telling Viewers to Use American Flag as Tablecloth

Matthew Sheffield | June 12, 2013 | 13:26

HGTV, the cable channel devoted to home remodeling and interior design, apologized today for a feature on its website that recommended the use of an American flag as a tablecloth for Independence Day celebrations.

“Drape a large American flag over the table as a bright and festive table runner,” HGTV advised. “Use a nylon flag so spills can be easily wiped off and the flag can later be hung with pride on a flag pole.”

MSNBC's Harris-Perry: 'We Want to Politicize' Newtown, Calls for Parents to Release Photos of Victims

Andrew Lautz | June 12, 2013 | 12:54

Governor Dan Malloy (D-Conn.) recently signed a bill preventing photos and videos of the Sandy Hook shooting victims from being released to the public. The bill had broad support from the victims’s families, and was the subject of a petition on change.org that gained over 100,000 signatures.

But MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry and her Sunday panel’s desire for gun control apparently trumps the concerns of these Newtown parents. Harris-Perry and all but one of her guests called on the parents to “break” the “evil of government” and release the photographs of their slain children to the public. Harris-Perry had spent part of her opening monologue decrying the politicization of photographs by “rabid anti-choice demonstrators” in the pro-life movement. But then Harris-Perry did just that with the December tragedy, asking:

NY Times Hypes NAACP Protests Against GOP-Led N.C. Legislature

Jeffrey Meyer | June 12, 2013 | 12:33

You can tell that members of the liberal media are uncomfortable that a southern state legislature is finally reflecting the conservative values of its electorate. For the first time in over a century, the GOP in North Carolina controls both chambers of the state legislature as well as the governorship, a feat that has the left-leaning staff at The New York Times extremely nervous and uncomfortable.

Take for example a story in the June 12 edition of the paper which highlights how “Weekly protests challenge conservative shift in state politics.” In a 26-paragraph piece, Times writer Kim Severson sympathizes with liberal protestors and relies heavily on anti-GOP quotes while including only two quotes from Republicans.

Piers Morgan Asks Robert Zimmerman If He Regrets His Brother Carried a Gun With Him

Matt Hadro | June 12, 2013 | 12:31

CNN's Piers Morgan will use any and every tragedy to bolster his crusade for gun control in the U.S. On his Tuesday night show he hounded George Zimmerman's brother Robert, Jr. over George carrying a gun the night Trayvon Martin died. Morgan also pushed for an age 25-and-under gun ban.

"Obviously, if George had not had a gun on him that night, the distinct likelihood is that Trayvon Martin would still be alive. Does he regret now carrying a gun around like that, do you think?" Morgan asked Zimmerman. "Do you regret that he had?" The trial of Zimmerman has only just begun. [Video below the break. Audio here.]

Networks Skip Audio of IRS Official Lecturing Pro-Life Group: Don't 'Force Your Beliefs' on People

Scott Whitlock | June 12, 2013 | 12:14

A pro-life legal group on Monday released audio footage of an Internal Revenue Service agent telling them, "You cannot force your religion or force your beliefs on someone else." Yet, ABC, NBC and CBS all have ignored the story so far. In the audio, IRS agent Sherry Wan lectured, "...You have to know your boundaries."

Alliance Defending Freedom, a Arizona-based group, is a non-profit legal organization. Wan continued, "But you have to respect other people’s beliefs, other people’s rights and not, you know, use some kind of confrontation." While the networks ignored the story, Sean Hannity featured it on Tuesday, touting, "This is audio proof that conservatives in fact were targeted and it's proof that they were bullied into keeping their belief silent." Liberals Join Forces: Soledad O'Brien Signed for 'Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel' on HBO

Tim Graham | June 12, 2013 | 11:58

HBO picked up deposed CNN morning host Soledad O’Brien for its monthly show “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.” Sports? Soledad? As AP reported, “O'Brien played college rugby, but her experience covering sports is limited.”

Apparently, HBO can’t find enough arrogant liberalism, from Gumbel to Bill Maher. In a statement posted at TVNewser, HBO Sports president Ken Hershman said O’Brien was a “perfect fit” for Gumbel’s show, where "thought-provoking stories" is usually code language for liberal tilt:

O'Reilly: Even 'Most Fervent Obama News Agency' NBC Having Trouble Defending President

Kyle Drennen | June 12, 2013 | 11:30

On Tuesday night's O'Reilly Factor, mentioning his appearance on NBC's Today that morning, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly observed that the Peacock Network was having a difficult time covering the scandals plaguing the Obama administration: "Look, even when I was at the Today show this morning, NBC News, okay? I would say the most fervent Obama news agency in the country....Even them, they're going, 'Whoa, whoa.'" [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

Guest Monica Crowley replied: "Even NBC, Holy smokes! That's when you know he's in trouble..." O'Reilly added: "...they can't defend him anymore, the President, because he's in charge." Crowley countered: "Well, I mean, look, they still go to great lengths to protect him." O'Reilly declared: "Not today they didn't."

ABC ‘World News’ Silent on Morning-After Pill for Kids

Matthew Philbin | June 12, 2013 | 11:18

America’s daughters will now be able to buy the “morning after” abortion pill with their Justin Bieber fan-zines and “Twilight” novels. To many people, that’s important news. But ABC didn’t think it was worth noting on “World News with Diane Sawyer.”

Perhaps ABC felt it was already covering an important health story and couldn’t fit another in the broadcast. And really, a segment on women wearing high-heels even though their feet hurt is hard-hitting journalism.

Mika Brzezinski: ‘Snowden Is Not a Whistleblower’

Noel Sheppard | June 12, 2013 | 11:03

As NewsBusters has been reporting, it's been a hoot watching typically anti-surveillance liberal media members support the President's program of having the National Security Agency look into everyone's phone records.

Count MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski amongst them, for on Wednesday's Morning Joe, the co-host struck back at any suggestion that leaker Edward Snowden was a whistleblower (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Leno: ‘Now That Tebow’s Associated With the Word "Patriot" He’s Being Audited by the IRS’

Noel Sheppard | June 12, 2013 | 09:36

Jay Leno continued his humorous attacks on Barack Obama Tuesday.

During a series of opening monologue jokes about the various scandals plaguing the White House, the NBC Tonight Show host said of quarterback Tim Tebow, “Now that he's associated with the word 'Patriot' he's being audited by the IRS” (video follows with transcript and absolutely no need for additional commentary):

MSNBC Panel Agrees: Republicans 'Don't Care About' Individuals Struggling in the Obama Economy

Andrew Lautz | June 12, 2013 | 09:16

The pundits over at MSNBC have it all figured out: Republicans don’t care about the millions struggling in the Obama economy. At least that was what a left-wing panel on Sunday’s The Ed Show decided, with Salon’s Joan Walsh declaring that Republicans “don’t care” about people who have lost their jobs.

Walsh’s ridiculous comments came after guest host Joy Reid preposterously worried that the Obama White House may be “a victim of the economy’s own success.” Reid fretted over the president’s agenda, asking:

CBS Anchor Scott Pelley Has 'Meltdown' at N.Y. Post After He Skipped Network's Own Scandal Scoop

Tim Graham | June 12, 2013 | 07:33

It looked bizarre. After CBS broke the State Department scandal on Monday’s “CBS This Morning,” there was nothing on “CBS Evening News.” The New York Post “Page Six” gossips suggested it was “because Pelley and his EP, Pat Shevlin, were peeved” it broke in the morning, not on their show.

“Pelley called Page Six last night to vehemently deny he had a meltdown — then promptly went into a meltdown,” they reported.

Bozell Column: Obama, Less Tyrannical Than Bush?

Brent Bozell | June 11, 2013 | 23:14

The unfolding story of the Obama administration monitoring not just telephone records but Internet usage has drawn media coverage with adjectives like “astonishing.” No doubt about it, even the pro-Obama press acknowledges it is a scandal. Still, it is laughable that the media would label him a “dictator” or discuss the “I word.”

That’s not what greeted George W. Bush at the end of 2005. Just eight years ago, journalists openly discussed tyranny and the possibility of impeachment.
