Obama’s Church Sanitizes Website

By John Stephenson | March 16, 2008 - 23:48 ET

First the controversial pastor disappears from Obama’s website. Then his church plays the victim card. Now Trinity Baptist have removed the “black values” from their about us page! Is the new pastor bringing a new vision and vaules system? Lets hope so, but lets not forget the values they adopted before and are rooted in.

The 160-word section has since been deleted from the About Us page, replaced by videotaped testimonials from church members extolling the virtues of the church, including a white official from the parent United Church of Christ who said she feels welcome at predominantly black Trinity.

“These black ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever blacks are gathered,” the original webpage said.

Here is the entire text of the section before it was redacted:

Fed Cuts Discount Rate on a Sunday Open Thread

By NB Staff | March 16, 2008 - 21:28 ET

The Wall Street Journal reported moments ago:

In an extraordinary weekend intervention, the Fed announced the most dramatic expansion yet of its lending, promising to lend for up to six months to securities dealers under terms normally reserved only for tightly regulated banks.

The central bank also cut the rate on such direct loans by a quarter of a percentage point, just two days before it is likely to slash interest rates more broadly. It also made a rare weekend cut in the discount rate -- ordinarily charged on direct loans to banks, and now also to securities dealers -- to 3.25% from 3.5%, while helping bring Bear Stearns into the arms of J.P. Morgan Chase.

This is a truly rare weekend event according to Forbes:

Call Girls of the NYT: Feminist Daughter of 'Very Progressive Parents,' NPR Fan

By Mark Finkelstein | March 16, 2008 - 20:07 ET

Far be it from NB to suggest any correlation between liberal political orientation and a propensity for prostitution. But in the wake of the Spitzer scandal, the New York Times has run an article profiling three call girls, and we couldn't help but look for telltale signs of their politics. There were no particular hints regarding one of the ladies. But as for the other two . . . well, let's say it's unlikely they'll be turning up anytime soon as contributing editors at NewsBusters.

Ava Xi’an is the apparently apolitical pro. She claims to have gotten into the business to pay for a heart bypass operation for her father . . . who doesn't have health insurance. Bush made her do it, you might say.

As for the other two, Sally Anderson is "an unapologetic feminist" who was "raised in a fancy New Jersey suburb with what she described as 'very progressive parents.'” Oh, and she's planning to leave the profession "to study social work in graduate school." I'd say that wraps it up.

Saturday Night Live: 'McCain is Crazy Old,' 'Black Is the New President'

By Noel Sheppard | March 16, 2008 - 18:14 ET

NBC's "Saturday Night Live" continued its political activism disguised as satire on March 15, this time choosing to make the case for Barack Obama while doing an entire sketch about John McCain being "crazy old."

During Saturday's "Weekend Update," former SNLer, and current "30 Rock" co-star Tracy Morgan, stumped for Obama, and did so quite comically (embedded right).

In the defining moment, Morgan concluded by marvelously countering Tina Fey's Hillary stump speech three weeks ago:

Obama’s Church Plays The Victim Card

By John Stephenson | March 16, 2008 - 16:58 ET

After blaming America for everything from HIV to 9/11, it was inevitable that the church would continue playing the victim card. Now they accuse the media for character assassination! But as others point out, isn’t it character suicide when the “victim” provides the posion?

The Chicago church attended by Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) issued a statement Sunday contending that coverage of his pastor’s inflammatory remarks amounted to character assassination and “an attack on … the history of the African American church.”

Obama distanced himself from inflammatory comments by the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., retiring pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ, after they circulated on YouTube last week and were played repeatedly by cable news channels.

Wright, condemning society as racist, said, “God [expletive] America” and referred to the “U.S. of KKK-A.”

Contrary to Claims, Obama Very Close With Racist Preacher, Wright

By Warner Todd Huston | March 16, 2008 - 15:21 ET

Many in the newsmedia are reacting with quite restraint to the revelations of comments by Obam's racist "spiritual mentor," Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr. Imagine if this were a Republican politician linked to such outrageous talk and you'll realize how the MSM has been studiously underplaying this controversy. A benefit of the doubt seems to be the rule of thumb for how the media is treating Obama, a benefit that would be denied a GOP candidate.

But, as ABC's Jake Tapper asked concerning Obama's knowledge of Wright's racist rants: What did Obama know and when did he know it? In this posting Tapper finds that Obama was distancing himself from Wright a year ago causing the question to be raised if Obama long ago wondered if Wright would be a liability? But, there is video of Obama lovingly introducing Wright even after that proving not only that Obama is very, very close to Rev. Wright, but also that he was not distancing himself from the man at all.

Brazile: 'Wright One of the More Moderate Black Preachers'

By Mark Finkelstein | March 16, 2008 - 14:59 ET

How much trouble is Barack Obama in over the extremism of Jeremiah Wright? Enough that Dem strategist Donna Brazile has been reduced to arguing that as black preachers go, Wright is relatively moderate. Enough that the normally affable Brazile got a bit short with Time editor Mark Halperin, he of the infamous memo to his subordinates during the 2004 presidential campaign while serving as ABC News political director.

The comments came during the panel discussion on today's This Week with George Stephanopoulos on ABC.

How The Media Is In The Tank For Obama

By John Stephenson | March 16, 2008 - 14:50 ET

The latest comes from the AP’s whitewash where after ignoring the controversy for as long as possible, they put out a piece titled Obama Decries Racial Rhetoric. The piece then omits the pastor’s actual comments from the readers, and minimizes them as “inflammatory.”

Sen. Barack Obama on Saturday decried “the forces of division” over race that he said are intruding into the Democratic presidential nomination contest.

“We have to come together,” he told a town-hall meeting at a high school.

He cited videos of inflammatory sermons given by his pastor that are now being used as political ammunition against him — remarks that Obama has denounced.

“If all I knew were those statements I saw on television, I would be shocked,” Obama said.

ABC's Stephanopoulos: 'Economy Almost Certainly in Recession'

By Noel Sheppard | March 16, 2008 - 14:26 ET

For more than a week, NewsBusters has been pointing out that media seem to be adopting the 1992 Bill Clinton playbook of presenting the economy as being in much worse shape than it really is.

On Sunday, former Clinton administration adviser George Stephanopoulos took this doom and gloom posture by repeatedly depicting the nation as already being in a recession.

In fact, he began the most recent installment of ABC's "This Week":

What Did Obama Know About His Pastor’s Hateful Sermons?

By John Stephenson | March 16, 2008 - 13:44 ET

Obama’s lead sinks seven points overnight! I think we all know he can thank his pastor for this.

This isn’t going away either. In his “denunciation” of the racist remarks screamed by his pastor of 20 years, Obama said he never heard any of these remarks while he attended. Investigative bloggers will dig around to see if that statement holds water. They already are.

Rocco DiPippo finds an old Newsmax article that claims an eye witness account of Obama nodding in agreement with a statement made by his pastor about the “United States of White America.”

Sunday Chat, Take One

Open Thread

By NB Staff | March 16, 2008 - 10:50 ET

For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Spitzer's call girl could turn her fame into fortune:

According to Reuters, the prostitute reportedly hired by former New York Governor, Eliot Spitzer may be turning her instant fame into cash.... Hustler’s Larry Flynt told Access Hollywood Friday that he is prepared to offer Dupre $1 million to pose nude in his magazine. Penthouse Magazine Group president, Diane Silberstein said they would also consider offering Dupre a nude photo spread, according to Reuters.

Is Ashley Dupre about to become extremely rich as a result of Spitzer's arrest? Given her looks, can Hollywood be far away? What does this say about our society if she indeed becomes a big star after having been in the center of a sex scandal that brought down a high-ranking political official?

The Clintons are going all out to Destroy Obama for personal Reasons

By Fritz2006 | March 16, 2008 - 10:09 ET

Information leaking from the Clinton camp indicates that Bill Clinton gave tapes of Obama's Pastor making inflamatory remarks to Fox News in order to give Cover to bigoted white voters in PA. so they will not be seen as Racist when voting for Hillary.

Petraeus: New Prez Pushing Ill-Advised Withdrawal Could Replace Me

By Mark Finkelstein | March 16, 2008 - 09:19 ET

David Petraeus was diplomatic in his language and careful to honor the primacy of civilian authority over the military. But the commanding general of multi-lateral forces in Iraq has left little doubt that if a new president wanted to withdraw from Iraq faster than would reflect Petraeus's considered military opinion, his family would be happy to have him home.

ABC's Bill Weir interviewed the Gen. Petraeus as part of a Good Morning America special today marking the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq. The opening segment focused almost exclusively on the costs of the war. Some producer had apparently calculated that the war has cost 19 times the annual budget of Los Angeles. Who knew? But a subsequent segment did highlight some of the progress that has been made, notably in terms of former insurgents now come over to the multi-lateral side. Then came the Petraeus interview, which ended with this exchange.
BILL WEIR: You serve at the pleasure of the president. If our new president, a year from now, says general, I want out of here in a year. What do you say? Is that even feasible?

Obama's Faith: 'Complex,' or Just Calculated?

By Tim Graham | March 16, 2008 - 08:01 ET

The liberal media has a simple policy about the religion of candidates. Democratic front-runners are "devout Christians," whether they go to church or not, since liberalism and the Lord’s work are pretty much the same thing. Republicans are the ones whose religious beliefs and associations are approached with fear and loathing.

Take one recent eruption from Obama about so-called gay marriage, as reported by CNSNews.com. "If people find that controversial, then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans." The scowling echo in that phrase disturbed many, that a Christian would say this piece of the Bible is true, and that other line of God’s word is obscure and worth ignoring. Is Obama trying to assemble today’s version of Thomas Jefferson’s bible, cutting out only the passages that display the Jesus he believes in, and shredding the rest?
