CNN's Wish Early: 'Something for NewsBusters.org for Tomorrow'

By Brent Baker | February 12, 2008 - 22:22 ET

At the end of panel discussion, just before 7:30 PM EST Tuesday night about conservative opposition to John McCain, CNN analyst Roland Martin recognized his next comment -- about how only “extremists” in the GOP afraid of losing power are opposed to McCain -- might well upset conservatives and so cited NewsBusters in putting a warning up front:

I have something for NewsBusters.org for tomorrow. These are the extremists of the party who want to continue to hold on to their power. The bottom line is you're losing it. Your party is changing. Deal with it.

Madison Wisconsin Breaks Snowfall Record, Will Media Notice?

By Noel Sheppard | February 12, 2008 - 22:21 ET

If all the global warming alarmists are right, the world is about to come to an end because the planet's getting too darned hot.

So, why is it so darned cold?

As Johnny Carson would have expected from his audience, "How cold is it?"

Well, as reported by the Capital Times, Madison, Wisconsin, has just broken an all-time record for the most snowfall in one year (emphasis added):

Thank you for your thoughts.  Your message will be conveyed to the Mayor.  Attached is the Mayor's Statement to the Media and a statement from Lt. Colonel Piccoli, U.S. Marine Corps on this issue.

NYT Disgracefully Advances Global Warming Alarmism in an Obituary

By Noel Sheppard | February 12, 2008 - 21:28 ET

In today's cynical world, is nothing sacred?

Is nothing deserving of respect or dignity? Even death?

Apparently not at the New York Times, which actually took the occasion of the demise of a highly-regarded American scientist to advance global warming alarmism.

Sadly, I kid you not.

As reported Tuesday:

YouTube Yanks Pro-Life Video, Allows Planned Parenthood Vids

By Warner Todd Huston | February 12, 2008 - 20:09 ET

Of course YouTube has every right to disallow any video they deem unworthy of their service, this goes without saying. But, when YouTube sets up it's own criteria for removing a video and then removes videos that do not fit its own criteria, then we have cause to wonder if a particular reason for banning videos is one that is kept secret from users. That secret reason would be a certain political bias used by Youtube to eliminate content. And, naturally, that bias is in favor of leftist causes and against the conservative ones.

Such is obviously the case with the recent removal of a video created by the American Life League that criticizes several promiscuous Planned Parenthood condom advertisements. The videos were removed, according to Youtube, because of an "inappropriate nature" and also because of complaints by YouTube members. But, the claim by YouTube that the ALL's ad breached Youtube's "inappropriate nature" rule does not stand up to logic or scrutiny, nor does it seem to fit their own publicly stated rules.

Last Monday, ALL received an email message from YouTube announcing the decision. The ALL website reports that, "The e-mail sent to American Life League said, 'After being flagged by members of the YouTube community and reviewed by YouTube staff, the video below has been removed due to its inappropriate nature.'"

Tonight's Returning TV Show 'Jericho' Takes a Left Turn

By Lynn Davidson | February 12, 2008 - 19:04 ET

NewsBusters.org - Media Research CenterIt it looks like CBS's resurrected nuclear holocaust survival drama “Jericho” is turning left. “It intentionally resembles Iraq” this season. Co-producer Jon Turtletaub stated “'Jericho' is not ignoring the political and social landscape” and star Skeet Ulrich added, “I feel like we were really making a statement to some extent.”

There were previous hints about “Jericho's" shift. In season one, main characters referred to military contractors as “mercenaries” and conspiratorial forces within the government were involved in setting off the nukes. The complication of the “occupation” of the “good” “Jericho” by the “bad” government mirrors the left's position on Iraq and the lefty screed that one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist.

A New York Times article about “Jericho's” return tonight at 10 pm EST hints at the change (bold mine throughout):

Couric’s Economic Savior: Stamps

By Jeff Poor | February 12, 2008 - 18:44 ET

Fear not, ye economically downtrodden: Katie Couric is looking out for you.

The "CBS Evening News" broadcasts over the last few months have found a multitude of ways to frame the U.S. economy in the worst possible ways, so much so that Couric compared CBS News correspondent Anthony Mason to the grim reaper on a recent newscast.

But Couric offered a solution to the pending doom and gloom you see every night on the news on the February 11 "Evening News" - stamp futures.

Joy Behar Warns of 'Republican Attack Machine'

By Justin McCarthy | February 12, 2008 - 17:54 ET

NewsBusters.org - Media Research CenterJoy Behar warned of the imminent "Republican attack machine" and of course it’s "lethal." On the February 12 edition of "The View," the co-hosts discussed, surprisingly, that Obama has been getting excellent press. They must have gotten the permission from the Clinton campaign to say that. Sherri Shepherd then noted, if Obama wins the Democratic nomination "it’s going to be unleashed with force."

Joy Behar then jumped in on the "Republican attack machine" and alluded to some attacks against Vietnam veterans such as Max Cleland and John Kerry and promised Obama will get "swift boated." Behar maybe missed the point that John McCain is the Vietnam veteran in the race and Barack Obama has no military service. Who could literally get "swift boated?"

Gregory Sign-off: 'Thanks for Washington'

By Mark Finkelstein | February 12, 2008 - 17:52 ET

OK, it was probably just a Freudian slip by someone with the Potomac Primary on the noggin. But perhaps big-government loving MSNBC should consider it as its official new sign-off. In any case, here's how David Gregory said goodbye at 3:59 PM ET at the end of his stint as network host this afternoon:
DAVID GREGORY: That's going to do it for me. My colleague Norah O'Donnell will take over our coverage. I'm David Gregory, thanks for Washington. Thanks for watching, rather. Stay with MSNBC -- all day coverage of Chesapeake Tuesday. Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews will host coverage of the returns. That's at 6 o'clock PM tonight Eastern, only on MSNBC, the place for politics. Have a good afternoon.

Reuters Reporter Works Obama Campaign Into BlackBerry Outage Story

By Ken Shepherd | February 12, 2008 - 17:37 ET

What does Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and the February 12 "Potomac Primary" have to do with a BlackBerry outage? Beats me, but apparently Reuters writer Wojtek Dabrowski found a way to work the presidential candidate's campaign staff into his Toronto-datelined February 12 story, "RIM reports 'critical' BlackBerry outage.'

RIM's worldwide subscriber base reached about 12 million people by late last year, mainly executives, politicians, lawyers and other professionals who rely on the BlackBerry to send secure e-mails. Sleeker new models are also catching on with students and others outside professional circles.

Jen Psaki, a spokeswoman for Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, said, "While the outage did confirm our widespread addiction to BlackBerry service, fortunately it did not cause more than a temporary inconvenience."

NBC's Today Has Used 'Pimped,' 'Pimping,' and 'Pimped Out'

By Tim Graham | February 12, 2008 - 17:37 ET

Is NBC News allergic to the use of "pimp" during its serious news broadcasts? In the wake of the scandal over MSNBC's David Shuster suggesting Chelsea Clinton had been "pimped out" by her mother's campaign, a quick look at the Nexis database shows that NBC News hosts and anchors have not been immune to the rising use of "pimp" in our pop culture as not only a noun, but as a verb or adjective, meaning to promote (either selling a product or the attributes of a person) or to improve or renovate (like the MTV show Pimp My Ride).

This is especially true of the Today show, where Al Roker, Natalie Morales, and Meredith Vieira (in her case by reading a quote) have all used the newfangled word. CNBC reporter Jane Wells also filed a story on the "Pimped Out John," a deluxe toilet with all kinds of amenities. Snippets of transcript follow.

Limbaugh vs. McCain Open Thread

By NB Staff | February 12, 2008 - 17:33 ET

The past couple of days, Rush Limbaugh has talked about how it would hurt John McCain if he suddenly endorsed the Arizona Senator for President:

The Democrats do listen, but they're inclined to do the exact opposite of what I say. If I really wanted to torpedo McCain, I would endorse him because that would send the independents and liberals that are going to vote for him running away faster than anything. What people don't realize is, I'm doing McCain the biggest favor that could be done for him by staying out of this. If I endorsed him thoroughly, with passion, that would end the independents and moderates, because they so despise me and they so hate me.

Do you think Rush is right? Would his endorsement chase away Independents and moderate Democrats leaning towards McCain? If this is the case, have Rush's opinions about McCain actually helped the Arizona Senator by driving Independents and moderate Democrats to support him?

Bernard Goldberg Attacks MSNBC's Double Standards

By Justin McCarthy | February 12, 2008 - 17:17 ET

Former CBS correspondent and best selling author Bernard Goldberg noted the clear double standard NBC and MSNBC has on liberal versus conservative commentators. On the February 11 edition of "The O’Reilly Factor," Goldberg discussed the corruption at NBC News after the fallout from the David Shuster "pimped out" comments.

Goldberg alluded to left wing partisan commentator Keith Olbermann, without mentioning him by name, and noted that has anchored the election night coverage and moderated a presidential debate. Goldberg posed the question "would NBC News have Rush Limbaugh anchoring their election night coverage on MSNBC? Would they have an angry, ideological right winger like Michael Savage anchor their election night coverage on MSNBC?" He then answered his own question "of course not!" And added that "they do have a left wing bomb thrower doing it."

Hillary Suggests Fox News Fairer to Her than MSNBC

By Noel Sheppard | February 12, 2008 - 15:45 ET

The Democrat presidential candidates refused to participate in debates sponsored by the Fox News Channel.

Yet, Hillary Clinton believes the supposedly conservative cable network is actually treating her better than liberal rival MSNBC.

Ain't that a kick in the head?

As reported by Politico Monday evening, John Harris interviewed the presidential candidate, producing the following delicious exchange (emphasis added, h/t NB reader Thomas Stewart and Inside Cable News):

Klein Can't Comprehend Why 'Fairly Moderate' Hillary Riles Republicans

By Mark Finkelstein | February 12, 2008 - 15:25 ET

How deep into the Dem mindset is Joe Klein? The Time columnist can't figure out why Hillary Clinton drives Republicans round the bend. Klein candidly admitted so today, chatting with Brian Williams on MSNBC.

BRIAN WILLIAMS: On the Republican side, does John McCain blunt back the attack, the insurgents on the right?

JOE KLEIN: I think to a certain extent he will. He'll have a lot more -- you know Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee would give him a great assist. Because the Republicans are completely berserk for reasons that kind of escape me about Hillary Clinton. She's not a wild lefty, she's a fairly moderate person. But she's the enemy, and if she materializes on the Democratic side, you're going to have a united and fierce Republican party.

The Obama Flag Flap

By Bob Owens | February 12, 2008 - 14:25 ET

The blogosphere began buzzing yesterday afternoon because of a Cuban flag superimposed with a picture of Che Guevara that was flown in an volunteer, unofficial office for Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama in Houston, Texas, captured by a local Fox News affiliate.

Allahpundit likened it yesterday to be the equivalent of flying a Timothy McVeigh flag in a John McCain office, and noted that if that had occurred, media outlets would have more than likely made more of an issue of it than they have in this instance.

I don't however, share the condemnation heard yesterday of the Obama campaign itself over this particular story from some of my friends on the right. I think James Joyner's take on the issue is even-handed, in that:

Seattle P-I: Anti-tax Advocates Are 'Special Interest', Liberal Groups 'Populist'

By Ken Shepherd | February 12, 2008 - 12:50 ET

Democratic state legislators in Washington State are taking aim at changing the state ballot initiative process, all because of numerous successes of perennial anti-tax advocate Tim Eyman, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported today.

While P-I reporter Brian Slodysko did an overall good job reporting the controversy, including how critics think the legislature could be overreaching in their "reform" efforts, this portion proved a bit vexing (emphasis mine):

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Sam Hunt, D-Olympia, has the backing of a coalition of organized labor, business interests and environmental groups, who say special interest groups have co-opted the state's initiative and referendum process from its populist origins.

"Up until the late '80s, almost into the start of the '90s, (the initiative process) was a populist grass-roots effort. At this point in time, it became professionalized. We felt obligated to defend the Legislature," Jim Bricker, a spokesman for the coalition, said.

No Peace Yet: So-Called 'Conservative' Attacks Radio Hosts as 'Oprah-like' 'Hairdressers'

By Rich Noyes | February 12, 2008 - 12:01 ET

Doesn’t look like an olive branch to me. Writing in today’s (Tuesday's) Wall Street Journal, novelist and sometime Republican activist Mark Helprin (not to be confused with Time magazine’s Mark Halperin) takes a series of insulting personal shots at the radio talk show hosts who’ve criticized John McCain for his numerous anti-conservative positions.

Helprin, whose last big political job was working as an advisor to Bob Dole in 1996, calls hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity “hairdressers [who] can talk all day long to one client as they snip...the depth of their thought is truly Oprah-like,” even as Ann Coulter is “relentlessly crocodilian.” For what it's worth, Helprin’s Wikipedia entry calls him a “conservative commentator.”

Open Thread

By NB Staff | February 12, 2008 - 11:47 ET

For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: U.S. population will soar to 438 million by 2050:

The U.S. population will soar to 438 million by 2050 and the Hispanic population will triple, according to projections released Monday by the Pew Research Center...The projected growth in the U.S. population — 303 million today — will be driven primarily by immigration among all groups except the elderly...By 2030, all 79 million boomers will be at least 65 and the elderly will grow faster than any other age group...New immigrants and their children and grandchildren born in the USA will account for 82% of the population increase from 2005 to 2050...There will be 72 young and elderly for every 100 people of working age by 2050 compared with 59 in 2005. The gap would widen more if immigration slows because immigrants tend to be of working-age, the report said.

This raises some important questions: First, given these populatation projections, how can America afford Social Security and Medicare in their current form, let alone the universal healthcare plans of Hillary or Obama? Second, isn't that last bolded sentence a death knell for immigration reform?

NYT Columnist Paul Krugman: Obama Supporters Are Like Nixon

By Clay Waters | February 12, 2008 - 10:57 ET

Economist and columnist Paul Krugman continues to rile his natural liberal allies by filing anti-Barack Obama screeds. On Monday he delivered the ultimate sanction, comparing Obama supporters to Clinton haters and even (gasp!) Richard Nixon in "Hate Springs Eternal."

In fact, these days even the Democratic Party seems to be turning into Nixo
