Chris Matthews: 'This Country Was Built on Biased Reporting'

Chris Matthews grew "verklempt," he said, on Wednesday night’s Hardball, as he pondered how a class reunion made plain for him that some people watch him every night, and trust him like people trusted Walter Cronkite. From there, Matthews and his guests took up the subject of objectivity in journalism:

Ana Marie Cox, Time.com: "I also want to say that this idea about voice being very important to the current viewer and, and Eugene’s right that it’s true, that this idea that we should be aiming for objective truth in, in journalism is a relatively new thing for us."

Chris Matthews: "I agree."

Cox: "And I think what’s important is that people trust, they could trust an unbiased [sic], they could trust a biased source."

Matthews: "Okay, this country was built on biased reporting."

Harvard Professor Smears Catholic Priests With False Claim

Via The Catholic League.

In a speech in New York, Harvard professor Jessica Stern reportedly told her audience, "Catholic priests are not stepping up to condemn those who kill abortion doctors." Her comments were reported in today's New York Sun (Fri. 6/15/07).

Well, Jessica. The reason that Catholic priests aren't "stepping up" is that there has been no reason to. There have been exactly ZERO murders of abortion doctors and clinic workers in the United States and Canada so far in the 21st century. The last murder was nine years ago in 1998. (Even the defenders of abortion recognize this. Look here.)

Maine 4th grade glob W response

See on Drudge that some 4th grade teacher got his students to "research" global warming and have taken an unveiled swipe at the 15 year-old featured in that story recently run here at NB.

Too bad these kids will find out what it is all about. The responses at the site of the Maine newspaper article is overwhelmingly against what the teacher did.

NY Times Reporter Admits Hillary Is ‘Hypersensitive’ on CNN

When two mainstream media outlets like CNN and the New York Times converge as they did on Thursday's "American Morning" and discuss Hillary Clinton, you might expect sugar-coated discussion of the leading Democrat presidential contender. But that wasn't the case when "American Morning" co-host Kiran Chetry interviewed New York Times correspondent Don Van Natta Jr., who is the co-author of a new book on Hillary Clinton entitled "Her Way: The Hopes and Ambitions of Hillary Rodham Clinton."

An Obscene Profit-Making Story the MSM Won't Cover: Planned Parenthood

The mainstream media often obsess about the profit margins of "Big Oil" companies. We at NewsBusters and our friends at the MRC's Business & Media Institute have frequently documented how the media view the petroleum industry in a particularly fiendish manner at the very worst and a highly skeptical light at best.

So surely the MSM will have just as much outrage when there's a corporation that receives from the taxpayer what literally amounts to blood money, and, to top it off, has a very healthy profit margin, right?

Unlikely if the name of that corporation is Planned Parenthood:

(CNSNews.com)* - Despite a drop in donations and the first fall in income from clinics in its history, the nation's biggest abortion provider made a high profit last year, thanks to the American taxpayer. Pro-lifers want this to stop.

During its 2005-2006 fiscal year, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America performed a record 264,943 abortions, attained a high profit of $55.8 million and received record
taxpayer funding of $305.3 million.

According to its annual report, income is divided roughly into three major categories: clinic income (fees charged to customers at clinics); donations (gifts from corporations, foundations and individuals); and taxpayer money (grants and contracts from federal, state and local government).

Time Magazine's 'New Action Heroes' are Liberal Republicans

If you want to be a "hero" to Time magazine you need a left-wing political agenda that includes:

  • Trying to stop climate change
  • support for taxpayer funded stem cell research
  • support for radical gun control
  • support for subsidized housing
  • OR raising taxes by 18 percent sometime during your term

Time's Michael Grunwald gushed about New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Calif.) calling them "New Action Heroes" on June 15.

The article, which labeled both Republicans as "social liberals" praised the way the politicians embraced left-wing positions on domestic issues, especially radical environmentalism.

John Cusack Falsely Claims Current Bush Administration Banned Coffin Photography

John Cusack appeared on the June 15 edition of "The Early Show" to discuss his new movie "1408." At the very end, host Russ Mitchell brought up his upcoming film "Grace is Gone." Cusack claimed the film is about Iraq and "some of the issues the families have when the coffins come home because...the Bush administration banned photos of the dead," which Cusack believes is a "very egregious political act."

RUSS MITCHELL: You’ve got a movie coming out later this year, "Grace is Gone," that you're very proud about, very proud of.

JOHN CUSACK: I produced a film called "Grace is Gone" coming out about -- it's about the Iraq conflict and some of the issues that the families have when the coffins come home because, you know, the Bush administration banned photos of the dead. So I thought that was a very egregious political act –

Hillary Clinton 'Sexy,' Says Michael Moore

No, this is not a joke. Michael Moore really did call Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) "sexy" in his soon-to-be released movie "Sicko."

According to a copy leaked via the Internet, Moore makes the point that poor Americans went without health care until Clinton came on the scene:

"This went on for years until this man [Bill Clinton] rode into town, bringin' with him, his little lady."

Then as flattering photographs of Hillary flashed on the screen and the song "I'll Take You There" played, Moore described the senator.

"Sassy. Smart. Sexy."

The Business & Media Institute will be offering a full review of "Sicko" next week.

Liberal Writer: U.S. Left Is America's Elite

One of the more persistent myths in this country is that lower income people are liberals. Anyone who's spent more than a weekend in the Midwest, South, or West can tell you that in many places, it's the richer neighborhoods that tend to vote Democrat.

The fact that the left now has money (and lots of it) has significant benefits for it but there are downsides, especially if you're one of those liberals who is obsessed with wealth redistribution. The trouble for these folks is that now that in many ways the left has made peace with capitalism, it simply doesn't have the stomach to engage in the extremist regulation that statist liberalism demands philosophically. Instead, the left focuses on "higher-order needs" such as environmentalism, identity politics, and political correctness.

That's very frustrating for many who long for the days when being liberal wasn't synonymous with pampered, rich media elites as Matt Taibbi writes in the left-wing "Adbusters."

Here’s the real problem with American liberalism: there is no such thing, not really. What we call American liberalism is really a kind of genetic mutant, a Frankenstein’s monster of incongruous parts – a fat, affluent, overeducated New York/Washington head crudely screwed onto the withering corpse of the vanishing middle-American manufacturing class.

CNN’s ‘Quick Hit’ on ‘Southern Conservatives’

Here’s something a little more light for a Friday afternoon, but demonstrates the mainstream media’s biased view of the world.

Among the "Quick Hits" on CNN’s "American Morning" on Friday was a brief on how the drought in the Southeast is affecting the production of Jack Daniels Tennessee whiskey in Lynchburg, Tennessee. The water levels in the cave spring that supplies the Jack Daniels distillery are "dangerously low" according to the brief by co-host John Roberts.

After giving the brief, Roberts and substitute weather forecaster Reynolds Wolf began the weather report with the following exchange:

Gun Control: A Rush to Condemn Firearms?

A CBS article claims that a new gun control proposal in Congress will “require safe gun use”. Rufus Williams, Chicago Public Schools President, stated: “We’ve lost 31 children, 31 CPS students have died or have been murdered this school year and it's not OK.”1 This theme kicks off HB 2666, sponsored by Congressman Bobby Rush, who represents Illinois’ Congressional District 1, which includes Chicago.2

What CBS doesn’t mention is that Illinois already has some of the toughest gun laws in the country. Brady Campaign considers Illinois to be among the best states in the country for gun control laws, giving the state an A- grade in their 2005 report card. A Firearm Owners Identification card (FOID) is required for all gun sales, and the state prohibits all concealed carry.3

Rush bases his justification for this new federal law in part on a recent tragedy where a criminal boarded a Chicago Transit Authority bus and began shooting students at a local high school. The shooter obtained the gun illegally from another person who knew the shooter’s murderous intentions. As noted above, concealed carry and private, unregistered transfers of firearms are already illegal in Illinois. Willfully being an accessory to murder is already a felony.4

I Want My GoreTV: MTV Launches New Global Warming Alarmism Campaign

Just in case our kids weren’t getting enough global warming alarmism from their teachers and the mainstream media, MTV announced Wednesday that it will be further brainwashing youth with junk science about the planet’s imminent doom.

How might that change Mark Knopfler’s fabulous “Money For Nothing” lyrics and video?

Before we get to that, here’s how Variety reported this announcement (h/t Tim Graham, emphasis added throughout):

Salon: 'Ambiguity' of 'The Sopranos' Offered an Alternative to 'Self-Righteous' Bush

If you think that America, our strategic and tactical mistakes aside, still clearly holds the moral high ground in the war on terror, well, think again, contends Gary Kamiya in the leftist online magazine Salon.

Kamiya believes that in the "war on terror" -- his quotation marks, not mine -- we're actually like one Mafia family that's fighting a turf battle with another, and that this "moral ambiguity" explains in part the popularity of HBO's The Sopranos, the last episode of which ran this past Sunday night.

Oh, and another thing: George W. Bush is driving us crazy. "Quiet violence and repressed mayhem," Kamiya writes, "haunt our own oh-so-respectable lives," and

Behar on Rosie Replacement: Someone 'a Little Less Controversial, Like Jack Kevorkian'

"View" co-host Joy Behar appeared on "The Tonight Show" to discuss the show, and predictably host Jay Leno brought up the fight between Rosie O’Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. However, when Leno asked about a potential replacement, Behar responded likewise.

"We had a lot of fun. She raised the game. She was very controversial. We were thinking -- I think they're thinking maybe this time we’ll put someone a little less controversial in there, like Jack Kevorkian."

Leno also asked Behar how "wacky" it is at "The View" and Behar noted her past mental hospital employment prepared her for the show.

ABCNews.com's Upside-Down View of Marriage

After the Massachusetts Legislature voted to crush the marriage amendment ballot measure yesterday, the networks largely ignored the story. But ABC’s Web site carried this headline:

Gay Marriage Safe in Massachusetts: A Vote to Redefine Marriage as a Union Between a Man and a Woman Was Defeated

To ABCNews.com, defining marriage the traditional way is a radical “redefinition” of the institution. Is it any wonder that a majority of the American people, according to the National Cultural Values Survey, believe the news media are a major factor in America’s moral decline? (hat tip to Matt Barber at Concerned Women for America)

Time's Klein Blasts Bush as Radical Conservative

I know what you're thinking after reading Tim's earlier post on Joe Klein. How delusional can this guy get?

Well, try this on for size.

According to the Time reporter and "Swampland" blogger, "George W. Bush is no moderate. He has governed as a radical, and we'll be paying the price for his thoughtless extremism for years to come."

Of course, this is the same president that spawned conservative frustration over:

Will some kind soul explain how to post short, renamed hyperlinks to posts, instead of the cut-and-paste i.e. http://www.whatever....?

Obama, Clinton Making Left-wing Blogs Uneasy

Bloggers, like any other media outlet, sometimes overestimate our influence. The lefty blogs seem to be doing just that when it comes to the 2008 presidential race where their preferred candidate, John Edwards, is falling further and further behind Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

That's not a problem for most Democrats but for left-wing bloggers it is a problem because Clinton and Obama have built up their popularity without the help of blogs.

This situation is making liberal bloggers uncomfortable as Paul Mirengoff reports. He begins by quoting from Jerome Armstrong, a political consultant blogger:

Jihadis Issue Internet Guidelines To Propagandize Non-Islamic Websites

The Middle East Media Research Institute published a rather concerning announcement Thursday regarding the Global Islamic Media Front’s new campaign to bombard non-Islamic websites with pro-Islamic propaganda (h/t Charles at LGF, emphasis added throughout):

"What we expect from you brothers and sisters is for the [Islamist] forum to be like beehives during the raid... [whereby] one person takes part in distributing [material]... another generates links... one person writes an article... while another writes a poem... People must feel and notice that the forums have changed radically during this blessed raid..."

How pleasant. The announcement continued to quote from this GIMF directive:

Geraldo Berates Democrats Who Boycott Fox News, But 'Kiss CNN's A--'

Fox News anchor Geraldo Rivera appeared on the June 15 edition of "Fox and Friends" to blast the organized left wing campaign against Fox News. After discussing Angelina Jolie’s banning of Fox News from her premier of "A Mighty Heart," Geraldo moved on to blast the far left blogs, and some Democrats, particularly John Edwards, who willingly followed. Geraldo could not resist to express his loathing of immigration enforcement and expressed outrage that some Democrats "go over and kiss CNN’s a**" when they have enforcement proponent Lou Dobbs.

Geraldo noted the Fox News has "just as many different opinions on different issues as any other network." He then labeled this anti-Fox campaign as "a form of censorship." The entire transcript is below.

Religion and Politics

As of late fellow NB’ers we have the race for the Presidency upon us. Those who study History and love politics love this time because of the many possibilities and seeing the candidate’s debate. But some of the people who post to this site have made this about religion and frankly I am tired of it. This blog was set up for the discussion of liberal bias in the MSM not bashing another’s religion. If you don’t want to vote for a candidate because of his religion, fine, it is your right, but to spout falsehoods and lies is uncalled for. If you want to discuss religion then find a blog dedicated to that subject. I understand that there are those who do not agree with my faith. Great. Press on dear brother and sister and live your way, but do not preach my religion to me. You may fancy yourselves “experts” but you only prove yourselves misinformed. I do not profess to be scholars of your faith so do not try to be one to mine.

WashPost Continues to Puff Pro-Amnesty Activists

The Washington Post today ran yet another story that puffed the politics of pro-illegal immigrant activists. [see Tim Graham's excellent post from April about biased coverage of a pro-amnesty rally]

In "The DJ Who Decided It's Drive Time," staff writer David Montgomery detailed the activism of Eddie "El Piolin" Soleto, a Los Angeles Spanish-language morning show host. It's not until deep in the article that we learn Sotelo is an illegal immigrant, having sneaked across the border from Mexico in 1986.

There's no effort to bring in an opposing point of view, and plenty of quotes are taken with the typical "jobs Americans won't do" tack.
