At about 4:15 PM ET today, CNN aired a Wolf Blitzer interview of Clinton notable for these two statements by her. View video here. BusinessWeek Recap: How Expert Forecasts Shaped Up in 2007
Are you a little skeptical when an economist or a financial strategist appears in the MSM, warning for the worst? A look back at the Dec. 25, 2006, “Where to Invest” issue of BusinessWeek gave us a measuring stick to see how frequently cited “experts” shaped up in 2007 – including New York Times regular Ian Shepherdson, Moody’s Economy.com economist Mark Zandi and Standard & Poor’s Chief Investment Strategist Sam Stovall. BusinessWeek surveyed 80 investment strategists about where the stock market would be at the end of 2007, and 58 economists on where gross domestic product (GDP) would be at the end of 2007. California Spendin’: WSJ Notes, Rest of Media IgnoreA hard-hitting subscription-only editorial in the Wall Street Journal today needs some reinforcement. That's because Californians relying on Old Media for their news about the Golden State's dire financial situation are being conditioned to believe that only a tax increase will solve the state's problems. The latest offering in that regard is a Field poll covered at the San Jose Mercury News and the San Francisco Chronicle, headlined "Many voters think deficit fix will require higher taxes" and "Voters resigned to higher taxes to solve budget crisis," respectively. Those headlines conveniently obscure the fact that the margin of those believing that tax increases are necessary vs. those who think that the answer is totally in spending cuts is only 48%-43%. Here is some of what the Journal had to say: NBC: Musharraf Will Crush Democracy In the Name of 'War on Terror'
MRC’s Kristine Lawrence found the item and offered the transcript: NBC: Bhutto Death Boosts Hillary, Cripples War on bin Laden
Mitchell also saw a political upside for John McCain and Rudy Giuliani on the Republican side. Google Claims Conservative Website ‘May Harm Your Computer’
Think I'm kidding? A screen-capture of the first page of Google web search results for "American Spectator" follows, although readers are strongly encouraged to investigate for themselves (image is blurry due to space constraints): Al Gore files lawsuit against Time MagazineLawyers for former Vice President Al Gore have filed numerous lawsuits against Time magazine, alleging a series of voting irregularities they maintain deprived Gore of Time’s “Person of the Year” Award. It has been announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin received the 2007 award, with Gore finishing second. Details of the suits are sketchy, but one of them accuses certain unnamed Time employees of denying others the right to vote when it was determined they were leaning toward Gore. Rumors have surfaced that one employee, known only as “Chad”, has confirmed those rumors. Another separate suit claims the voting process to be far too complicated to be understood by, to quote the lawsuit, “a bunch of journalists.” Gore’s lawyers are calling for a recount of the ballots in question. They also demand that independent observers from the United Nations Commission on Climate Change be allowed access to any recount procedures. Ann Curry Dismisses Reagan's Foreign Policy Credentials
No, Reagan was just elected in an intense point in the Cold War. The Soviets had invaded Afghanistan and U.S. diplomats were still being held hostage in Iran. Romney did say that Reagan was "elected at a time of the Cold War. And the Cold War was the greatest challenge that was faced by this nation in the last half of the last century." Oprah Fans: 'Stop Pushing Obama Down Our Throats'Celebrity endorsements, helpful or harmful? The LA Times explores that question with Oprah Winfrey and her endorsement of Democrat Barack Obama as a test case:
Rosie Voted 2007's Most Annoying Celebrity
The woman who admitted that she's so gullible, she's “five seconds away” from joining a cult, also outed herself as a 9/11 Truther and floated several conspiracies. She doesn't think Al Qaeda is a threat--hey, they're mommies and daddies, too! But she knows who the real bad guys are. She called the US a state sponsor of terror and equated the military with terrorists. She claimed the captured British sailors were really part of a “false flag” operation (“Google it!”), and Ahmadinejad isn't all that bad. Don't worry, she is concerned about terrorists. She thinks the US is robbing 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed of his humanity by labeling him a “terrorist.” (Her sneer quotes, not mine.) Here are some of the quotes that helped Rosie win her new title (bold mine):
The Worst 'Notable Quotables' of 2007
MSNBC's Chris Matthews was a big "winner" this year, taking the top slot in three categories -- the "Blue State Brigade Award for Campaign Reporting," the “Channeling the Nut Roots Award,” and the "Dynamic Duo Award for Idolizing Bill and Hillary," for (in order) gushing over Barack Obama, suggesting Bush and Cheney be tried for Nuremberg-style war crimes, and equating Bill Clinton with Jesus Christ. Oh, what a busy year he had. Mika Finds 'Friend' to Blame Bush for Bhutto
Joe Scarborough spoke with Mika from Florida, where he has been spending the week. View video here. Excerpts: Washington Post Mocks Newt's Book As a 'Smokey the Bear' PoseThe Washington Post reviewed Newt Gingrich and Terry Maple’s "A Contract for the Earth" on Sunday, but Post "national environmental reporter" Juliet Eilperin was torn. On one hand, she wanted to say that even the Republicans recognize and bow before the Global Warming Threat. On the other hand, she simply had to mock the idea that private-sector solutions would help rather than stringent government mandates: "This is no revolutionary manifesto. It's Gingrich as Smokey the Bear, rather than as the provocateur he used to play on the national stage." The Post illustrated the sentence with a graphic that crudely pasted a picture of Gingrich’s face on a Smokey Bear painting. Ultimately, in the review's final paragraph, Eilperin dismissed the book as "greenwash," resembling a "corporate advertisement" from an op-ed page, designed for public relations rather than actual solutions: Who said this?Who said this?
"Americans resort to force only when we must. We have never been aggressors. We have always struggled to defend freedom and democracy. We have no territorial ambitions. We occupy no countries. We build no walls to lock people in. Americans build the future. And our vision of a better life for farmers, merchants, and working people, from the Americas to Asia, begins with a simple premise: The future is best decided by ballots, not bullets."
More Lazy Reporting From UPI: Internet 'Not Ideal' For Political Ads
UPI claims the following: Giuliani on "Hannity & Colmes"Did you catch Giuliani on Hannity and Colmes tonight (Thursday)? Colmes' first words to Giuliani: "How do you feel?" Rudy answered he felt fine. Colmes: "Your health is good?" (I'm quoting from memory.) Am I being too suspicious, or did Colmes have that planned, in order to call attention to Rudy's past bout with cancer? Colmes is a sneaky, underhanded little jerk -- I wouldn't put it past him to have planned those lines as a sly tactic. (You can't tell me he really cares about anybody's health.) And while I'm on the subject, did you ever notice how, whenever there's a conservative guest he doesn't agree with, Colmes ALWAYS begins his comments by interrupting the g | |
