Defining the Loony Left: Thanksgiving Hatred? The website The Black Commentator defined the loony left by calling for the end of the Thanksgiving holiday, since it's apparently an event for white supremacists. This is more about the Internet than the mainstream media, but remember that liberal blacks the news producers treat as sensible pundits -- like Julian Bond of the hallowed NAACP and Julianne Malveaux, the woman who hoped on PBS that Clarence Thomas would die young -- are on this website's board. Here's just a snippet of their anti-Thanksgiving rant: Carole Simpson's History of Liberalism at ABC NewsCarole Simpson was a long-time anchor and reporter for ABC News, and is best remembered for anchoring on Sunday nights for a number of years. She's also remembered for moderating the 1992 presidential debate in Richmond, and especially for suggesting with a little bit of vinegar that President Bush, "the education president," should answer an education question first. Her endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president in her post-journalism years is utterly unsurprising (it's more surprising she's now claiming it was some kind of slip.) Roy Sekoff of the Huffington Post was incredibly lame on Hannity & Colmes arguing that if Carole Simpson supports socialist health care, that's not left-wing, because it polls well. That's like claiming that supporting tax cuts isn't conservative, because it polls well. In truth, Simpson has a long record of liberal commentary with little regard for how it would affect her image as an anchor of hard news. Here's a list of her liberal outbursts, starting with the recent Hillary endorsement: Bozell: Ex-ABC Anchor Finally Admits the ObviousAppearing on FNC's "Hannity and Colmes" to promote his new Hillary Clinton book Whitewash, NewsBusters publisher and MRC president Brent Bozell was asked to talk about former ABC anchor Carole Simpson's recent endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president. Liberal host Alan Colmes tried to spin Bozell's remarks but Brent stuck to his guns, correctly pointing out that Simpson's explicit action wasn't revelatory to anyone who's looked at her work. Indeed, as Brent Baker pointed out last month, Simpson has a long record of making ludicrously biased statements in favor of Democrats and against Republicans. On "Fox News Sunday," Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson told a somewhat stunned Chris Wallace that FNC is biased against his campaign. I kid you not. As reported hours ago by TheHill.com (video available here): NYT Headline: ‘As Democrats See Security Gains in Iraq, Tone Shifts’Would you have ever imagined the New York Times, less than a year before the presidential elections, not only admitting that things are getting better in Iraq, but also suggesting Democrats – including those campaigning for president – were wrong about the surge? On the front page of its popular Sunday edition, no less?Well, there it was this morning, in big, bold letters: “As Democrats See Security Gains in Iraq, Tone Shifts.” Hold on to your seats, for that was the first shock. Just look at how the piece began, especially the first five words (emphasis added throughout): LAT: Island Shrinking by Global Warming... But for Over 100 Years?
But, despite common sense, the Times waxes despondent over the loss of this rather stark and unattractive island and the dissension it is sowing amongst the 400 residents there. And in doing so they miss a larger and much more interesting story. Open ThreadFor general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Syria has decided to attend this week's Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland. "Arab attendance at the Annapolis summit is seen as a victory for the U.S., which is hoping that broad Arab participation will help bring about an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal." What does this mean in the long run? Is peace possible in this region? Will the Bush administration be given any credit? Might this have an impact on the 2008 elections? Egyptian Christian sentenced to three years in prison for "fraudently" claiming to be a Christian. In Egypt, your religion as posted on your official ID is based on your father's religion. There is a current case of an Egyptian woman whose "Christian" father briefly converted to Islam for three years in 1962 and later came back to the Christian faith. Her father got somebody to forge documents showing he was a Christian. Eventually, authorities realized this. In the meanwhile, his daughter, being a Christian, identified herself in 1982 as a Christian on her marriage papers. Now the authorities are sending her to prison for 3 years, saying her claim of being Christian was a "fraud" because her father was once a Muslim and did not officialy change his papers back to Christian. From a couple of sources I have looked at, it appears the government of Egypt makes it hard to convert from Islam. (See all three links below.) |
