Weekend Captionfest: Class in Session

Couric Describes U.S. Enemies Gathered in Cuba as 'Who's Who of Bush's Adversaries'

In a brief item on the Friday's CBS Evening News, Katie Couric asserted: “At the top of tonight's news briefing, a who's who of President Bush's adversaries on the world stage all together in one place. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are among the leaders in Havana for the meeting of the non-aligned nations. Raul Castro is playing host. His older brother, Fidel, is still recovering from intestinal surgery.”

ABC and NBC, however, realized those leaders and others gathered, for the summit in Havana of the “Non-Aligned Movement,” are enemies of the United States, not just the current occupant of the Oval Office. Fill-in ABC anchor Kate Snow referred to how the organization “regularly takes anti-American stances and today was no exception” and reporter Jim Avila, in Cuba, relayed how “America's short list of antagonists” were “all bashing the United States for opposing Iran's nuclear program, all of them together in Cuba, capital of anti-Americanism.” NBC's Brian Williams, anchoring from Havana, described the summit of non-aligned nations as “all of the enemies of the United States, really, gathered in one room.”

Immigration

This was sent to the editor in OC Register, but was refused print.

"So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made
up
of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the
Statute
of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated
the same
as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.
Maybe we
should turn to our history books and point out to people like
Mr.Lujan why
today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of
immigrant any
longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of
Europe to come
to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand
in a long line
in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on
their hands and
knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the
laws and support
their new country in good and bad times. They made learning
English a primary
rule in their new American households and some even
changed their names to
blend in with their new home. They had waved good
bye to their birth place to
give their children a new life and did
everything in their power to help
their children assimilate into one
culture. Nothing was handed to them. No
free lunches, no welfare, no labor
laws to protect them. All they had were
the skills and craftsmanship they
had brought with them to trade for a future
of prosperity. Most of their
children came of age when World War II broke
out. My father fought along
side men whose parents had come straight over
from Germany, Italy, France
and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans
ever gave any thought
about what country their parents had come from. They
were Americans
fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were
defending
the United States of America as one people. When We liberated
France, no one
in those villages were looking for the French-American or the
German
American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only
Americans, and
we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of
those immigrant
sons would have thought about picking up another country's
flag and waving
it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace
to their
parents who had sacrificed so much to be
here.
These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They
stirred the
melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl. And here we are in
2006 with
a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges.
Only they
want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one
that
includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to
their
mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all
about. I
believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early
1900s
deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice
in
raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon
for
those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be
appalled
that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign
country
flags. And for that suggestion about taking down the Statute of
Liberty, it
happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the
immigration
bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United
States just yet.

Cher's the surprise in Jersey

Democrats expose discrimination towards gays, apologize, and expect all to be as was in a matter of just a week. How many more times must Mr. Gibson beg for forgiveness?

The democrats booked ‘Cher’ to appear and lip-synch a variety of greatest hits only later to discover this individual to be a man. Obsessed with the idea of public scrutiny, they feared media exposure.

A Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage is upcoming.

Cher's the surprise in Jersey
Alfred Doblin, North Jersey, September 15, 2006

Diane Legriede, executive director of the Democratic State Committee, saw "Cher" walking the hallways, she said, "We cannot have that walking in the hallway." Goldstein recounts a series of comments by Legriede continually referring to the Cher look-alike as a "that." ...

Bush Pokes Reporters at Presser, CNN Asks for Show of Respect for Ahmadinejad

President Bush's Rose Garden press conference on Friday morning began with the president making a forceful statement about the need to keep the country safe, and how new legislation to curtail interrogations and surveillance programs could make that job harder. But the goofiest question of the day had to be the one from CNN White House correspondent Suzanne Malveaux:

Malveaux: "Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian President, will actually be in the same building as you next week, in Manhattan for the United Nations General Assembly. You say that you want to give the message to the Iranian people that you respect them. Is this not an opportunity, perhaps, to show that you also respect their leader? Would you be willing to, perhaps, meet face-to-face with Ahmadinejad, and would this possibly be a breakthrough, some sort of opportunity for a breakthrough on a personal level?"

Bush: "No, I'm not going to meet with him. I have made it clear to the Iranian regime that we will sit down with the Iranians once they verifiably suspend their enrichment program. I meant what I said."

It may have been Bush's shortest answer of the day. He didn't get into how he was supposed to show respect for the Iranian president's Israel-threatening or anti-Semitism or Holocaust denial.

Perhaps Bush's best quip of the day came in his exchange with Sheryl Gay Stolberg of the New York Times who described her paper as "friendly." To laughter, Bush retorted: "I'd hate to see unfriendly." Plus, NBC's David Gregory was again the Man Who Wouldn't Shut Up in an antagonistic exchange with Bush. (More on both below.)

CNN: Are Falling Gas Prices a Sneaky Scheme to Help Republicans?

In a September 15 report for "The Situation Room," CNN reporter Bill Schneider wondered if the current decrease in gas prices has been timed to help Republicans in the midterm elections. He ominously asked:

Schneider: "The drop in prices may last a couple of months, long enough to get through the November election. Could that be what the oil companies want?"

Does this mean that high prices in the spring and summer were an attempt to hurt the Republicans? This theme, that oil companies are trying to aid the GOP, was repeated or insinuated throughout the report. In the segment, which aired at 4:40PM, anchor Wolf Blitzer introduced Schneider by noting that a form of smog reducing gasoline will be pulled "as we head into the fall and the November elections."

Friday Afternoon Biz-Econ Pick-me-ups

This was not a good day, and probably won't be a good weekend, for those who have been bad-mouthing the economy --

CBS's 'Early Show' Airs Alarmist Global Warming Report

On Friday’s “Early Show,” CBS News correspondent Jerry Bowen offered a one sided global warming report. The story appealed to the emotions of viewers and only cited scientists who are alarmist on the subject. Bowen referred to specific findings and opinions offered by scientists who claim “man made” global warming is a threat, while only offering the reality that critics of man as the cause of global warming exist and not their opinions or research.

Citing NASA climate scientist, James Hansen, Bowen noted some frightening conclusions:

“He told a climate conference this week, ‘I think we have a very brief window of opportunity to deal with climate change, no longer than a decade at the most.’ If nothing is done, Hansen foresees a different world with rising seas that would put coastal regions under 3-20 feet of water, more heat waves, more prolonged droughts worldwide, and imminent extinction of animal species in the arctic, including polar bears...”

Network Morning Shows Skip President's Improved Polls; 'Fox And Friends' Mocks MSM

Over the last week, President Bush’s poll numbers have improved. While the media was quick to highlight poll results when the President’s numbers were declining, they have been less enthusiastic about noting his resurgence. Referring to the "New York Times," co-host of "Fox and Friends" Steve Doocy noted:

"...So, this is really big news for the White House and I'm sure it's going to be on page one. So anyway, with a –because I know that when the president's approval rating was falling, it was on page one..."

Mr. Doocy searched the entire front section of the "Times" on air and was unable to locate news of improving popularity for President Bush. However, it was not just the ‘New York Times" that has omitted improving poll numbers. NBC’s "Today" made no mention of an NBC poll just released yesterday showing President Bush’s approval climbing to 42%. Additionally, neither ABC’s "Good Morning America" nor CBS’s "Early Show" mentioned President Bush’s improved standing with American voters.

ABC's GMA Highlights Southern Republican Women...Who are Voting for Democrats

Friday’s "Good Morning America" broadcast yet another bad-news-for-Republicans story concerning the party’s chances in the upcoming mid-term elections. In a report from Robin Roberts, three southern women, all either former Republicans or Republicans considering voting for Democratic candidates, were given air time to express their disenchantment with the GOP:

Robin Rasmussen: "I voted Republican in every election since I was 18."

Robin Roberts: "But not this year. Robin Rasmussen is thinking of voting for a Democrat and she’s not alone."

Janna Herbison: "And I used to consider myself to be a Republican."

Tracy Quick Bradford: "...I think that the, the candidates that, that represent the Democratic party this year are most in line with my views."

Savage Attack: Globe Writer Accuses W of 'Terrorizing' Americans

The Boston Globe refers to Charlie Savage as a "staff writer."  But judging by the hyper-partisan comments he made on Fox News Channel this afternoon, Savage belongs over on the opinion page.

Interviewed with two other legal reporters by FNC's Martha MacCallum, Savage took these shots at President Bush and his fellow Republicans:

  • President Bush is "terrorizing" Americans with the terrorism issue for political gain.
  • Speaking of the current rift between the president and Sen. McCain over interrogation rules for suspected terrorists, Savage snidely observed that McCain had been a POW in Vietnam while Bush spent the war "back in Texas."

Popular Mechanics Editors Beaten Soundly in Debate

I am pleased to bring this to the attention of the neo-cons that feebly rely on the Popular Mechanics' article that claimed to debunk all the 9/11 "myths".  Later, instead of admitting defeat, the article's writer can only boo-hoo about being accused of assisting in the cover-up.

The NewsBusters Weekly Recap: September 9 to 15

Rosie O’Donnell, the newly installed co-host at "The View," observed the 9/11 anniversary by stating that America "squandered" world support and the next day she asserted that "radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam."

O’Donnell wasn’t the only media member to use September 11 as a pretext to bash America. CBS veteran Andy Rooney suggested in his "60 Minutes" commentary that America start acting in a way that "wouldn’t make so many people in the world want to kill us." MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann went further, accusing President Bush of "impeachable" offenses and "lies."

Appearing on another network, but continuing in the same vein, Sean Penn talked to CNN’s Larry King and mused about the President bringing fascism to the United States...

N.Y. Times Makes News Out of 'Zero Chance' Push for Gays In The Military

There are moments when you wonder why, when some legislative initiatives are absolutely doomed to defeat, that liberal newspapers publicize liberal lobbying that’s totally in vain – except for the publicity. Thursday’s New York Times promised on its front page an article on how "gay groups" are once again pushing for a repeal of the military’s "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy, instituted in the Clinton administration. One "centrist" group told the Times said the proposal has "zero chance" of passing, but Lizette Alvarez wrote a story completely promoting the pro-gay point of view. Shocking.

The gay group in question here is not the usual one, the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, but rather the group called "Soulforce," led by Mel White, the gay former aide to Jerry Falwell. Alvarez set the stage right where the gay left wanted it, at a Wisconsin recruiting office:

Broder Faces Liberal Wrath for Declaring Press Should Apologize to Rove

During today's Live Discussion at WashingtonPost.com, columnist David Broder took heat from liberal readers who asked him to explain why he said the press should apologize to Karl Rove for the stink it made over the non-issue of Valerie Plame.

It's remarkable how overwhelmingly liberal the questions are that make it to Broder's attention, but perhaps conservatives readers have given up on the Washington Post.

Washington, D.C.: Mr Broder, if you feel Karl Rove is owed an apology from the pundits and writers over Valerie Plame, did you also call for an apology to the Clintons after Ken Starr, the Whitewater investigation and the failed attempt to impeach President Clinton? If not, why not?

David S. Broder: As best, I can recall,I did not call for such an apology. My view, for whatever it is worth long after the dust has settled on Monica, was that when President Clinton admitted he had lied to his Cabinet and his closest assoc, to say nothing of the public, that the honorable thing was for him to have resigned and turned over the office to Vice President Gore. I think history would have been very different had he done that.

HuffPo Analyst Says Pro-Lifers Are Just as Dangerous as Islamic Extremists

As hard as it might be to believe, the liberal defense of Rosie O’Donnell’s anti-theistic comments on Tuesday’s “The View” has become almost as absurd and offensive as the remarks themselves. First a media analyst on Wednesday night claimed that "Radical Christianity" is just as bad as radical Islam because abortion clinics in the past have been attacked as reported here. Then, on Thursday’s “Scarborough Country” (hat tip to Hot Air), Huffington Post media analyst Rachel Sklar suggested that Christians opposed to abortion and condom use are just as dangerous to America as Islamic extremists (video link and full transcript to follow).

So, in the course of 24 hours, the definition of "Radical Christianity" has miraculously expanded to include anyone that is pro-Life and/or is against the use of condoms. Here’s the amazing exchange:

Aspiring Senator Bobby Casey, 'Authentic Catholic' and Libertine?

Reporter Alan Cooperman played up Pennsylvania Democrat Bobby Casey's speech at Catholic University in Friday's Washington Post as part of an exciting new trend of Democrats speaking out on religion. (Casey is seeking to unseat Sen. Rick Santorum, who is loved -- and hated -- for his passionate faith-based politics.) His other example of the religious outreach trend was the media's Tiger Beat fanzine idol, Sen. Barack Obama.

Cooperman passes several obvious tests for a balanced article. He includes conservatives and liberals in it, and labels each side. He lets the conservatives underline that Bobby has some positions that please the libertine left, including making Plan B abortifacients available to everyone, including teenagers, and backs  "civil unions for same-sex couples." That's a fancy way of saying "gay marriage." But what about the ending?

The Pope's Anti-Islam 'Blunder'

Failing to call Islam a "religion of peace" can get you in a lot of trouble these days. Agence France Presse, a syndicated news service like the AP, says Pope Benedict XVI committed a "blunder" by saying, among other things, that Islam was a religion "spread by the sword."

By unwittingly angering Muslims with his comments on Islam, Pope Benedict XVI has shown that he has yet to shake off his academic theological roots and master the global media machine with the same deftness as his predecessor.

In clinging to theology and orthodoxy, the bookish Benedict has shown little regard for media management in getting his message across, unlike the communications-savvy John Paul II.

Tony Snow Has Reporters Laughing in the Aisles

Tony Snow, the still fairly new White House press secretary who's been at the job for only four months, is getting more "laughs" out of the gathered reporters than his predecessor, Scott McCellan.

Snow was a veteran journalist and commentator before becoming press secretary, giving him much more experience than McClellan had before taking the job. Snow has been more adept at handling McClellan's old nemeses, Helen Thomas and David Gregory.

Reports the Washington Examiner:

Yeas & Nays reviewed the press briefing and press gaggle transcripts from Snow’s first four months on the job and compared them to those of Snow’s predecessor, Scott McClellan, during his first four months.

Under Snow, there were more than 330 percent more instances of laughter — as defined by the transcriber’s insertion of “(Laughter)” in the transcript — than under McClellan.

BBC Mirrors American Media Bias on 'Rebellious' Republicans

It appears that the BBC is taking a page from the American media in its love of ‘rebellious’ Republicans. Last night, BBC World (airing on Washington PBS station WETA) opened with a report on the President’s visit to Congress.

“It soon became clear that even in his own Republican Party there are serious doubts about the president's plans. Three Republican titans, Senators McCain, Warner, and Graham, broke with their president and by 15 votes to 9 the Senate Armed Services Committee approved a bill very different to that of Mr. Bush. It's an extraordinary act of defiance. “

As the report closed, the theme repeated:
“As vital congressional elections draw near, who actually speaks for the republicans on the key issue of the day national security? Adam Brooks, BBC News, Washington.”
