+ 63 to 67 / +7 ~ Time to Start working on 2012 Senate Elections
- Login to post comments
Well, yesterday was not too bad, however, we didn't quite get where we needed to be in the Senate. With that in mind, I've looked up the incumbents who stand for election in 2012 (in alphabetical order by state).

32. Barrasso, John (WY)
What I'd like to see us do here, is to have a nice, long, reasoned discussion, as we did with the Health Care Debate. We should pick one of these, from our home state if possible, or just someone we really like/dislike if not (or anyway, whatever!)....and present some facts.
What is good, bad, and ugly about each lawmaker. Why he or she should be soundly defeated the next time around, or overwhelmingly supported. If we are targeting someone for defeat....who would be a great person to run in opposition (i.e. who is the next Marco Rubio?).
How did your Senator vote on Health Care? Bush Tax Cuts? Any other legislation you are particularly enthused/incensed about? Any other information you'd care to share...he cursed at you or (like Dingy Harry) said tourists smell. Anything you'd care to share.
Here is a link to DKos' Lifetime Liberal Ratings and here is the link to the American Conservative Union's Lifetime Conservative Ratings. If you have any other references that you'd like to see included in the body of the forum, here, pm me. Open to all input on parameters here.
JPR1 provided this great resource...Project Vote Smart.
Kindly refer to your Senator by (number) and name, so we can readily reference. Links, of course, are encouraged.
Let's discuss who is on our hit list next, replacements, strategies, alliances, etc. 2012 is 2 short years away.
Okay you Southwesterners...give us a clue.
I would imagine Bill Richardson will run (he seems to be such an attention whore).
Who do we have on the "good guys" side of the aisle?
Oh yes, and while I'm at it.....a ninety-ninth strike against my critter, Bill Nelson, this week. Mr. Busybody chastised our new governor, Rick Scott, for turning down the Federal $3.2 billion for High Speed Rail. SHUT UP BILL, get to work reducing the Federal deficit, quit worring about the state budget, Mr. Scott has it under control, thank you very much.
Little sucker knows he's toast....Obamacare did him in, or so he says.
George Allen is looking pretty good right about now. Looks like Webb didn't get any lasting points in trying to get his sidearm closer to the Democrat leadership.
Webb is getting out so as not to be embarassed (any further).
BTW....LOVE your avatar, Maxwell!
So since the liberals took a drubbing in Nov… 3 democRAT seats have become available: Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Kent Conrad (N.D.), and now Jim Webb (VA) (note: I intentionally include Lieberman as a Democrat while he may claim to be Independent, we all know the truth of the matter.)
I wasn’t too sorry to see K.B. Hutchinson throw in the towel… but I hope Texan’s nominate a real ‘fire and brimstone’ Tea Party conservative to replace her.
As is, in all likelihood, KBH's Texas seat.
I'm really, really, really wanting Jeb Bush to declare for Bill Nelson's seat.
The last one to try to unseat him was Katherine Harris, and beside the 2000 Election debacle, the woman is mean as a snake. Charlie Crist will probably give it a whirl, too. So unless Jeb steps up, I'm not too sure about Florida.
I must have missed something BIG! Kyl (f AZ) stepping down? I admit I haven't been paying too much attention to the upcomming 2012 races... but to miss that is just shameful on my part!
...in all of the hoo haa with Mubarek NOT stepping down and Dumbo getting run over by events.
But yes, Kyl is retiring at the end of his term and not seeking re-election. Sorry to see him go, as I said.
I’m sorry to see him go as well, but I’m not confident we in AZ will get a solid “Tea Party” conservative to replace him. Look what happened when J.D. Hayworth tried to challenge McCain. You would be amazed at the control the “Old Guard Republicans” have over this state (contrary to what most ‘Snow-birds’ think).
I’ll keep you and all the folks informed about the new candidates… once they start to emerge.
P.S. Take a gander at the "Semi-humor Pre-formatted Reponse" thread here on the OT Forum and please add some input.... the thread could use some sane comments! :o)
I’m all for a well reasoned discussion… I’m just not sure my reasoning qualifies. Nevertheless, here at the Grumpy Center for Advanced Studies (GCAS), we (actually it’s just me) work overtime to insure our predictions maintain the highest standards of accuracy (and since we only claim those predictions we are right about… We remain at a 100% accuracy rating).
DEMOCRATS
1. Dianne Feinstein (CA) – This seat will remain in Dem control and CA will remain in The Twilight Zone for at least another 4 years… we’ll see what happens after another 3-4 years of Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown’s governorship.
2. Tom Carper (DE) – As of this moment I am calling this one as safe for the Dems… I think the people of DE are democrat zombies.
3. Bill Nelson (FL) – The South is going conservative and with a good candidate this seat has Republican written all over it! GOP gain.
4. Daniel Akaka (HI) – Hawaii is lost. Those folks don’t like to change their Senators… and this race is no exception. On the positive side I like the new Hawaii Five-O TV show.
5. Ben Cardin, (MD) – With 5 of 7 House seats and the governorship in Dem control… This one looks like a win for Cardin… Oh well, the summers are too humid in MD anyway.
6. Amy Klobuchar, (MN) – This one is a toss-up… If the job situation in MN doesn’t improve, Amy is out. On the other hand, I never liked the old Mary Tyler Moore Show that was set in Minneapolis/St. Paul and co-star Edward Asner made me want to puke so I’m a bit prejudiced. GOP gain.
7. Claire McCaskill, (MO) – Claire might go the way of the dodo bird unless she veers hard right… this could be a Republican pick-up.
8. John Tester, (MT) – With Republican Denny Rehberg’s win in the House it may just be that MT is becoming somewhat conservative… still there are two Dem Senators fm MT… I think this one stays Dem.
9. Ben Nelson, (NE) – Nebraska is the most Republican State for national offices… I think the good folks in NE can’t wait to get rid of Nelson… call this one for the Republicans… BTW stop into Kearney NE if you get the chance… great food and nice people. GOP pick-up.
10. Bob Menendez, (NJ) – The big question mark in this race is Governor Christie… if he continues to do well, this race might just go Republican – so long as Snookie doesn’t become the republican nominee. GOP pick-up.
11. Jeff Bingaman, (NM) – NM is slowly changing back to Rep… but I think Bingaman still has the edge. BTW if you ever take AMTRAC through Albuquerque, the train has a 40 minute or so stopover… get the burritos from the lady with the lunch truck and save yourself a whole bunch of money over the food on the train… and those burritos are big and delicious!
12. Kirsten Gillibrand, (NY) – NY Republicans really need to find a good candidate to run… Although I believe NY is almost hopeless, maybe they will reconsider their decision to let Kirsten fly on her own for a while… (and I still don’t know why NY Republicans didn’t make a bigger deal out of the proposed Ground Zero Mosque). Dem hold.
13. Kent Conrad (ND) – This guy has the job for as long as he wants it… too bad, but they all can’t be GOP pick-ups.
14. Sherrod Brown (OH) – Hmmm, the folks in Ohio seem to know what they are doing lately… there is a good chance here for a GOP pick-up. Also, if you’ve been putting off that heart attack until you find a good place to have it, the Cleveland area has some of the finest medical facilities in the world. GOP pick-up.
15. Bob Casey Jr., Bob (PA) – Bob claims to be “pro-life” (if it is even possible to be pro-life and still support the democrat agenda) and he is smart enough to read the handwriting on the wall and move slightly right… call this one a Dem hold. However, the big question is whether Philadelphia scrapple can actually be classified as a food product?
16. Sheldon Whitehouse, (RI) – Where the h*** is RI? But to the analysis… Whitehouse has a lifetime conservative rating of 2.67% and his fellow Dem Senator Reed has a lifetime rating of 6.30% and the islanders don’t seem to care... this one stays Dem and RI remains the “Let’s stop at Denny’s to get a bite after a putting on a bender State” Dem hold.
17. Jim Webb, (VA) – VA is going to send this guy away. This is one of the few races I am pretty confident about this early. GOP pick-up
18. Maria Cantwell, (WA) – WA is known for 3 things – The Columbia River and two of the dumbest Senators ever elected. Now that Murry won, it is doubtful the citizens of the State ever have a hope of leaving the dark side. I wonder if the voters there realize what a political laughingstock they have become by letting these air-heads represent them. Dem hold.
19. Joe Manchin, (WVA) – Gets reelected… I mean who else is there to run against him next time?
20. Herb Kohl, (WI) – Well, if Fiengold can lose…so can this guy. It does appear WI has had enough and if their concern for sanity does not subside, and another good candidate can be found, call this one a GOP gain.
INDEPENDENTS
21. Joe Lieberman, Joe (CT) – Joe stays. Republicans will thank him for not being a Dem anymore, and Dems will thank him for caucusing with them. Now, if Joe decides to switch parties and decides to run as a Republican to hold onto a committee chairmanship… I think we need to reject his offer… even at the cost of a sure win.
22. Bernie Sanders (VT) - VT is the most hopeless state in the nation. Sanders stays a vote for the Democrats.
REPUBLICANS
23. Jon Kyl, (AZ) – My guy! A solid conservative and a great Senator. I just don’t see anybody able to challenge him. GOP hold.
24. Richard Lugar, (IN) - I can only hope Indiana conservatives can find a decent candidate to run against this RINO… Call this one a GOP seat (not a conservative one) hold.
25. Olympia Snow, (ME) – If it walks like a dem, talks like a dem, and votes like a dem, it’s a dem. The folks in ME need to decide whether they want to be represented by conservative principles or liberal ones. I have no say, but you people in Maine need to make a @#%* decision! Right now, this is a Dem pick-up waiting to happen!
26. Scott Brown, (MA) - He hasn’t impressed me so far. But if his presence irritates the Dems… let him stay. But you never know with MA, they could just as easily go back to electing ne’er-do-wells… I’m sure the Dems have a drunken, rapist leech waiting somewhere in the wings to challenge Brown. It’s a tough call, but I suspect this one goes back to being a Democrat seat.
27. Roger Wicker, (MS) - With a 90.08% lifetime ACU rating, I hope he stays around for a while… unless he goes “bi-partisan” on us. GOP hold.
28. John Ensign, (NV) – A solid conservative, I hope NV doesn’t blow it like they did this year! GOP hold.
29. Bob Corker, (TN) – IMHO both of TN’s Senators (Alexander & Corker) are a bit too moderate, but I have hopes they will feel free to move even more to the right now that there will be a Republican House. But a battle over Corker’s conservative credentials serves none but the dems… so let’s get Corker reelected. GOP hold.
30. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, (TX) – Somehow I get the impression KBH might just retire and not bother with another run… if she does run again, I think it would be wise to support her 100% (even if her CR isn’t as high as I would like). GOP hold.
31. Orrin Hatch, (UT) – I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive Hatch for his yes vote on the Ruth Bader Ginsberg nomination, or on his constant threat to “get really mad at the democrats… while never getting mad at the dems” during the Clinton impeachment proceedings… Still, unless there is a potential superstar running against him in the primary – keep him. GOP hold.
32. John Barrasso, (WY) – As of the 2009 CFR ratings, Barrasso had the highest lifetime conservative percentage (98.67) of anyone… What more do you want? Work hard to keep this guy in the Senate! GOP hold.
Totals:
12 Democrat holds – But 8 losses: Bill Nelson (FL) - Amy Klobuchar, (MN) - Claire McCaskill, (MO) - Ben Nelson, (NE) - Bob Menendez, (NJ) - Sherrod Brown (OH) - Jim Webb, (VA) - Herb Kohl, (WI).
8 Republican holds – But 2 losses: Olympia Snow, (ME) - Scott Brown, (MA)
Projected Senate Balance of Power – 53 GOP (majority) – 2 Ind. – 45 DEM. (Note: edited at 5:49 est 11/5/10)
Just finished watching FN Sunday....Claire McCasgill & Lindsey Grahmnesty (unfortunately he's not up until '14).
I can't wait to lose some of these losers. Bill Nelson, buh bye!
That was an incredible analysis. So, uh...yeah, what Grumpy said! ^_^
The only gimpy thing I have to add is that I would especially love to see SNOW GO, on principle and for an example. But you are right, in that Maine has to decide that 1) she's the same as a Dem and 2) they no longer want that. Maybe the time will be right to send her packing.
The more I think about Olympia Snow, the worse I feel... it's like trying to cure a Ouzo hangover with a shot of Sterno juice. I hope she just retires and saves us all the trouble of a protracted primary, followed by a write in campaign.
Blondie, thank you for posting the original thread. GG Thank you again for the kind words. - Grump :o)
You are more than welcome. You did all the hard work...I just said: "me too, me too!" ;) And yes, thanks for this thread, Blondie. I copied off the list, and I'm going to keep a closer eye on them.
Snow retiring would be so refreshing, but I'm not holding my breath on that one! ((^_^)) Frankly, I'm totally amazed/perplexed that Pelosi is still trying to hang onto some sense of power, so I just don't understand a lot of the critters.
GG, you have to realize that liberalism is a mental disease. That is why Nanny Pelosi was saying up until the votes were in on Tuesday that the Dims were going to keep control of the House.
I like what Michael Tomasky said about her at Guardian.co.uk, I think she was a good to very good speaker. In interviews and other occasions I had to speak with her, she’s not what you’d call an intellectual, and I dislike this habit she has of interrupting her own sentences and changing direction like a pinball that’s just hit a bumper.
If one wants to vote sanity back into our Government they should vote Conservative. Remember, RINO's are Dem Lite so they are mildly crazy. ;-)
One thing that I have not been able to figure out when it comes to certain liberals is if they REALLY believe what they are saying (which I would argue is often a supreme case of denial/delusion) -- or if it's just all a bunch of tactics from the same playbook, which would mean they are trying to manipulate.
In any case, they give me a big headache. *_*
I've been informed my link didn't link anything! Sorry about that. I'm having enough problems just keeping pop-ups on this site from sending me to other links, so I won't even bother trying again.
So never mind! :)
The Good: Amy Klobuchar D-MN…will be challenged; hopefully by a legitimate conservative. She has tap-danced her way through her first term playing a moderate liberal; moderate of course having become something entirely expected in Minnesota. Though she did vote for the border fence, she voted to de-fund the F-22 and voted against the repeal of the $600 reporting requirement. She’s got some issues with the abortion issue and voted for Sotomayor and Kagan as well. Send her packing.
The Bad: Al Franken
The Ugly: We get to put Al’s stones on the block in 2014. I for one can hardly wait.
That's what I'm talking about.
Let's begin the discussion about the Good, Bad, and Ugly still left in the Senate.
Weeding the garden is ugly work, but best taken on while the weeds are still tiny.
...to think there was a time when Harry Reid might have been plucked with a thumb and forefinger and tossed in the compost.
Now we need a dose of 2-4D and a backhoe.
To anyone interested, Project Vote Smart is a terrific resource for details about your so-called leaders.
Somehow the electorate must become more aware. How nearly half the state of Minnesota sees a re-tread like Dayton as a leader with vision simply escapes me.
I would very much like to see my Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand get voted out in 2012. From what I had read she changed her spots once she made it to Washington going much further to the left that what she had run on when she was elected to the House back in 2007.
The GOP here needs to shake it's house up and really start to embrace Conservatives and the Tea Party.
We need to put up good viable candidates that are picked in a primary and not behind closed doors.
I agree. Living in New York is depressing...and I moved here from California! Maybe one day I'll learn and move to a state that actually has a clue. The fact that an obnoxious, hyper-partisan creep like Schumer can cruise to victory with Sadaam Hussein numbers is highly depressing. Gillenbrand has essentially been his up-State toady. I hope we can find someone to wipe her out in 2012, but, more importantly, I want Webb, Casey, Menendez and McCaskill. Ben Nelson is finished unless Nebraska becomes the federal welfare queens that Alaska voters have become. The scalp I want most, however, is Hatch's. He is the epitome of everything that is wrong with the "go along to get along" Beltway Republican Party. His disgraceful cowardice in the face of Lisa Murkowski's temper tantrum was inexcusable...especially when packaged as "good taste". Obnoxious blowhard.
I must have missed that Murkowski thing. I'm going to scratch Orrin now, on your recommendation.
Good Grief! Grahamnesty is on Greta blathering as I type. He's #1 on my list, unfortunately, he's not up until 2014.
Come on down to Florida, fella...we have no state income tax, and now have a young gun Senator.
Someone on the OT today mentioned the American Conservative Union's ratings...perhaps we should discuss what kind of a rating do we want from a sitting Senator before we go full support?
Oh, and I forgot the most important part why he absolutely must go....
He bailed out of University of Florida for Yale. A Gator Traitor, in other words. Out, damned spot!
#3 ~ Bill Nelson, D-FL
For his enthusiastic support of O-Care, Bill Nelson deserves to be on the top of the electoral hit list in 2012.
Nelson, the astronaut Critter, is pretty much of an ultra liberal on social policies, although he serves on the Armed Services Committee and generally supports the military and the CIA. He's against offshore drilling in Florida.
Nelson followed Florida icon Connie Mack into the Senate. While Connie Mack was a great man, his grandson is not (this kid runs for everything, he's a total loser).
My ideal candidate to run against Nelson in 2012 is Jeb Bush. I don't think Jeb will ever run for President, nor should he. But Jeb is a heavy weight in Florida politics, and in conservative circles in general. I think he'd be a great addition to Florida's senatorial contingent (although it might chap him a little bit to be the junior Florida Senator to his protege, Senator Marco Rubio!!!). Jeb has the chops and the resume to knock Bill Nelson out of the race.
While I'd love to see Allen West as a Senator one day, I don't think he'll be ready by 2012. Remember, winning Florida 22 is his very first elected office. He needs to learn the ropes. Marco Rubio, although quite young, has served in the Florida House and was its Speaker, so he knows about legislating, a key skill for the Senate. Soon for Allen, but not yet. Besides, I think we need to keep him in the House for a while....to stir up the RINO's.
OK....who else has something to add?

Pay attention....we have work to do to get a majority in the Senate, now is the time to start working.
